StrategicPlan MessagefromtheBoard
As the 2010 school year comes to an end, so does the five year strategicplanthathasservedastheguidingpathfortheAmerican InternationalSchoolofMozambique.Thisplanandtheworkofthe current and past administrators, teachers, staff, students, and parentshaveledourschoolthroughdramaticchanges.Amongthe morevisiblechanges:AISMisnowanIBWorldSchoolofferingthe Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programs. Our student populationisnowclosetodoublethatof5yearsagoandwillsoon reach the goal of 500 students. Our building program is in phase two of the four phase master plan and we are now building new science and media structures that will incorporate libraries, technologylabs,performingartsroomsandadditionalclassrooms. AISM is a unique setting within a country that is experiencing an unprecedented phase of development across the social and economic spectrum. This reality brings both a challenge of potential growth and the need to make AISM the best institution possiblewithinadiversepopulation.StudentsatAISMcomefrom over40countries.Involvementbyparentsischerishedandvibrant. Staffmembersarecommittedtoexcellence. ThenewStrategicPlanwillenableustochartourpathto2015and beyond.OurnewMissionstatementisanimportantpiecethatwill keep us focused on the daily task of maintaining an environment forcreativelearningandmeaningfulgrowth,bothintellectuallyand socially. Together with our Mission, we believe that our vision of being recognized as one of the best schools in Africa will help to engender a school that continually strives to be profound in its educational program, and expansive in its capacity. Creating and becoming lifelong learners is both a goal and a challenge that the membersofthisschoolembracedailyandintothefuture.ThePlan looks at the school in its dynamic setting to answer questions regardingourfuturegrowth,andtoplanforthefinancialsystems

and resources that this will eventually entail. The success of this next Strategic Plan depends on the combined efforts of engaged students, dedicated parents, highly qualified teaching staff and an adaptive,forwardthinkingadministration. Major objectives for achievement at AISM will be outlined in the coming months which will serve to create a monitoring plan that theAISMBoardofDirectorswillusetofollowourprogressonthe Strategic Plan. At the beginning of each school year, members of theadministrationandstaffcreatedepartmentalactionplanswith annualobjectiveswhichhavebeendevelopedfromtheoverarching goalsoftheStrategicPlan.Anannualmonitoringframeworkisused bytheboardandadministrationtoensurethatfocusismaintained throughouttheyear.Thisframeworkincorporatesyearlyoutcome indicatorsthattheboardandadministrationhaveagreeduponand which ultimately find their foundation in the five year Strategic Plan.Attheendofeachsemester,theAISMBoardStrategicplan committeesreporttotheAssociationonprogresstowardthegoals oftheStrategicPlan. Our Strategic Plan sets the direction for our school and is our attempttomanagechangeinapositiveway.Itisanexpressionof how we want to achieve our Vision and Mission. We have constructed the plan with the idea that as a living document, flexibility is required to be able to meaningfully adjust in such a dynamic environment. To ensure our schools continued success and the recognition as a leading international school in Africa by 2015 will require that all involvedthe parents, the school employees and the studentssupport our vision and are able to articulateourschoolssharedvaluesandbeliefs.

In2010AISMcelebratedthe20thanniversaryofitsfounding andembarkedonanewfiveyearStrategicPlan.Working closelytogetheroveraperiodofseveralmonths,theBoardof Directors,administrators,parents,teachersandstudents developedstrategiestofacethechallengesandtotakefull advantageoftheopportunitiesofagrowingschool. ThisStrategicPlanof2010representsanexcitingchapterin AISMshistory.Wehavepurposelysetoursightshighto createthemostexciting,challengingandinnovativelearning environmentforourstudentspossible.Ourstrategyisto encourageeverystakeholdertoenvisiontheAmerican InternationalSchoolofMozambiqueasaleadinginternational schoolinAfricawithinthenextfiveyears,andtowork togethertomakethevisioncometrue. Ourcommitmenttointernationalrecognitionismorethan justwords.Wehavebeenonthispathformanyyearsand recentmilestonesincludeauthorizationinallthreeIB programs:PYP,MYPandDP;awelltrainedandexperienced internationalfaculty;increasedenrolmentswithwaitinglists atmanylevels;andtheexpansionandrenovationoffacilities.

Today,wehavetheopportunitytobuildonourstrengthsand exceedthedreamsofthepast.Ourgoalsareestablishedand ourprioritiesareidentifiedtotakeustothenextleveland beyond.Studentlearningisalwaysatthecenterofour decisionmaking.TheStrategicPlancontainedwithinthis documentisdesignedtoprovideourstudentswith educationalprogramsandfacilitiestrulyfitforlearninginthe 21stcentury. AISMsvisionandmissionarethetouchstonesforall educationalandbusinessdecisions.TheStrategicPlan articulatesthreeoverarchinggoalsandkeyobjectivesto provideastrategicfocusinallthreedomains:Educational Programs,Facilities,andFinanceandOperations. Atthebeginningofeachschoolyear,membersofthe administrationandstaffcreatenewactionplanswithclearly definedyearlyobjectiveswhichareinalignmentwiththe overarchinggoalsoftheStrategicPlan.

A frequent assessment of progress is necessary in order to ensure that objectives are achieved in a timely manner. To this end, a yearly Monitoring Plan is used by the board and administrationtoensurethatfocusismaintainedthroughout theyear.Attheendofeachsemester,theAISMBoardTask Forces for each strategic goal and the Boards Strategic Plan Oversight Committee meet with staff and report to the Association on progress toward the goals of the Strategic Plan.
