Large Linear Classification When Data Cannot Fit In Memory

Hsiang-Fu Yu, Cho-Jui Hsieh, Kai-Wei Chang, and Chih-Jen Lin National Taiwan University
The paper describes linear classification by a block minimization method for data larger than the memory size. Effectiveness is shown through experiments, and also by proving the theoretical convergence of the method.

Connecting the Dots Between News Articles

Dafna Shahaf, and Carlos Guestrin Carnegie Mellon University
Given two news articles, the paper shows how to automatically link them together through a coherent chain of news articles. For example, it can recover the chain of events starting with the decline of home prices (January 2007), and ending with the ongoing health-care debate.
