2nd Values Education 1/2 day Workshop

In todays open society, there are a multitude of both positive and negative influences. It is impossible to shield ones child from all the negative influences without at the same time filtering out some of the important positive ones too. The only solution to this challenge is to expose the child progressively to the influences of life and at the same time building in the child a strong value system. This is the only protection s/he can realistic have from negative influences. Values Education is a way of conceptualising education that places the search for meaning and purpose at the heart of the educational process. It helps pupils develop holistically, nurturing a secure sense of self, respect for self and others and supports the raising of academic standards. Valuesbased Education seeks to promote an educational philosophy based on valuing self, others and the environment through the teaching of noble, ethical values (i.e. principles that guide quality behaviour), as the basis of good educational practice. It encourages adults to model values and to give time for reflective practices that empowers individuals to be effective learners and good citizens. As part of our programme, the second of three half-day Values Education Workshops this year was held at the SMK Sri Permata School on 13 Aug 2011. About 50 students, including about 12 students from the REF mentoring programme, attended the workshop organized by the Rotary of Club of Bukit Kiara Sunrise and conducted by trainers EQ Training and Development (EQTD). Some of the Rotarians at hand at the workshop were Kong, Graham, Susan Lim, Yoke Leong and Steven Lim. Besides them, volunteer mentors Mun Yee and Nancy Ong, together with Stevens daughter Isabelle were also present. Regards,

e-NEWS
Young adults are stepping up and being the change they wish to see.
West Milford When people think of Rotary, they think of meetings and professionals getting together to support a world wide organization of service and projects. What people dont know is that this world of service and good will starts even earlier. Two extraordinary young women, as members of Rotarys youth organizations, High Schools Interact and Rotaract for college students, took on projects to help others while putting service above self. Meaghan Harrison, a senior at the University of Findlay in Ohio, is a member of Rotarys college club, Rotaract. Joining the Rotaract club was one of the best things Ive ever done, said Harrison. I had no idea when I graduated West Milford High School in 2007, that I would be going to places like Honduras and Guatemala and having the opportunity to be so involved in the community and the world, by experiencing other cultures first hand. It was absolutely a memorable experience I wont soon forget. On the first day we traveled in a medical brigade in the mountains, riding in the back of an army truck because of the steepness and condition of the road, said Harrison. Once up there, we sorted and handed out clothing, and helped with dental and doctor check-ups. She and her team then went on to the main purpose of their trip - a preschool they would help build. After clearing the area, they assisted in pouring the concrete floors in both rooms, digging sewer lines and planting three flag pole stands. Contractors in San Pedro Sula would finish the project with the help of a grant from the Swanton, Ohio Rotary Club. The children, as well as the families in the neighborhood of the school that we were working on, were so grateful for our presence there - and were even involved in helping, whether it was mixing cement with us, or bringing mini sandwiches as a midday snack, said Harrison. After my trips I came back feeling inspired, as though I had found a way to really be a part of something that would have an impact globally. I appreciate my life so much more, knowing Ive participated in improving the lives of others. Emily Fredericks is a member of the West Milford High School Rotary Interact Club, a service organization for high school students. Emilys father is president and a long time member of the West Milford Rotary Club. Emily is dedicated to helping others in whatever way she can. After seeing a flyer for Baby Basics, a drive to collect supplies for infants in need, she thought it would be a great idea to host a drive of her own.I thought about how fortunate I have been and realized I could help others. And who better to help, than those who cant help themselves - the babies! said Emily. So she organized a one month drive, setting up collection boxes, sending out flyers and daily announcements at the high school. As a result, Emily was able to give the biggest donation the Baby Basics workers had ever seen, thanks in part to her friends and family, the Interact Club a donation from the West Milford Rotary club and community donations. And they were thrilled. One of the workers said to me its people like you who change the world. And that, made it all worth it, said Emily. Two young women, each involved in the tradition of Rotary by putting service above self.

Rotary International NEWS

Presidential Citation and Changemaker Award can help your club set tangible membership goals What is your clubs approach to recruiting and keeping members? August, Membership and Extension Month, is an ideal time to discuss membership strategies for the year. The Presidential Citation and Changemaker Award both include membership criteria and are excellent resources to help you set your goals. Clubs aiming for the Presidential Citation this year must add at least one new member and keep at least 85 percent of their membership. Additional goals include recruiting RI and Rotary Foundation program alumni and young professionals, and increasing diversity by adding more female members. Districts must meet similar goals. Review the full criteria for the Presidential Citation. The Changemaker Award, established by RI President Kalyan Banerjee, also puts membership in the spotlight. Clubs must achieve a specific set of club service goals, including adding one new member under the age of 40 for each 50 members, implementing a comprehensive strategy for keeping members, and demonstrating that they have retained 85 percent of their members for the three Rotary years ending with 2011-12. Review the full criteria for the Changemaker Award.

Training Tip
Set the stage for good listening during a training event by using an improvisation exercise. Ask participants to form groups of four or five and have them tell a story together. Each person contributes one word of the story as participants take turns going around the circle. Devote three to five minutes to this activity so that each participant has at least two turns and the group has a chance to complete the story.Afterward, ask participants to describe their feelings during the activity, and write their responses on a flip chart. Active listening, the flexibility to go with the group rather than ones own agenda, and building on the thoughts of others are important skills to practice during a training seminar.
