Course Description An introduction to the determination, development, and uses of internal accounting information, this course will benefit all business students who will be the future users of accounting information.
Learning Objectives (1) Obtain a basic understanding of managerial accounting concepts (2) Conduct cost-volume-profit analyses (3) Differentiate between job-order and process costing (4) Understand the role of activity-based costing in decision making (5) Prepare schedules used for profit planning and analyses of budget variances (6) Discuss management decision-making processes

by the same authors which will have a few more chapters than what we cover in the course. But do not buy any other edition.
Grading Criteria Your final grade in this course will be determined as follows: Examination I 26% Examination II 30% Examination III 30% 9 Quizzes 14% Total 100% Please note that there will be NO extra credit opportunities for this course.

Exams There are three non-cumulative exams. The exams are in class and cover book and notes. Each exam may be comprised of multiple choice questions and problems. You will need to bring an 882 Scantron, a picture ID and pencils for each exam. Accepted IDs are state issued DL or ID, UTD comet card, green card or passport. A non-programmable calculator is allowed during each exam. Cheating is strictly prohibited and, if caught, will be automatically elevated to a judicial affair. Anyone missing an exam will receive a zero for that exam. Exceptions will be granted with documented medical or family emergencies only. Students missing an exam should contact me in writing prior to the date of the absence, and provide appropriate documentation for the excused absence. At my discretion, a make-up exam may be

scheduled. The level of difficulty of the makeup exam may not be comparable to the exam given at the scheduled time.
Quizzes There are 9 quizzes, each worth 2 points. I will not give any make-up quizzes. I will drop two quizzes with the lowest grades. The remaining 7 quizzes will account for 14 points toward your course grade.
Homework Exercises Homework exercises are listed in the course outline. You are encouraged to 1) read the text and 2) work all the multiple choice questions before each class, and 3) do the suggested exercises after each class. I will illustrate some of the suggested exercise problems in class.
Attendance I will not take attendance. However, it is critical to your success (especially in an introductory course like this) that you attend each session. Office hours are not a substitute for coming to class. Problems worked in class will not be available electronically. Consult a classmate or the answer manual if you miss a class. It is also important to come to class prepared, so I expect that youve read the days material.
Use of Computers and Recording Devices Audio or videotaping of class lectures is prohibited. Students may use laptops to record their notes subject to the following provisions: (1) the computer must be silent; (2) THE COMPUTER CANNOT BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET. Students failing to follow these rules will be asked to leave the classroom. Under no circumstances will students be allowed to use their computers on exams.

Academic Integrity
The faculty expects from its students a high level of responsibility and academic honesty. Because the value of an academic degree depends upon the absolute integrity of the work done by the student for that degree, it is imperative that a student demonstrate a high standard of individual honor in his or her scholastic work. Scholastic Dishonesty, any student who commits an act of scholastic dishonesty is subject to discipline. Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts. Plagiarism, especially from the web, from portions of papers for other classes, and from any other source is unacceptable and will be dealt with under the universitys policy on plagiarism (see general catalog for details). This course will use the resources of turnitin.com, which searches the web for possible plagiarism and is over 90% effective.

Email Use
The University of Texas at Dallas recognizes the value and efficiency of communication between faculty/staff and students through electronic mail. At the same time, email raises some issues concerning security and the identity of each individual in an email exchange. The university encourages all official student email correspondence be sent only to a students U.T. Dallas email address and that faculty and staff consider email from students official only if it originates from a UTD student account. This allows the university to maintain a high degree of confidence in the identity of all individual corresponding and the security of the transmitted information. UTD furnishes each student with a free email account that is to be used in all communication with university personnel. The Department of Information Resources at U.T. Dallas provides a method for students to have their U.T. Dallas mail forwarded to other accounts.
As per university policy, incomplete grades will be granted only for work unavoidably missed at the semesters end and only if 70% of the course work has been completed. An incomplete grade must be resolved within eight (8) weeks from the first day of the subsequent long semester. If the required work to complete the course and to remove the incomplete grade is not submitted by the specified deadline, the incomplete grade is changed automatically to a grade of F.
