The unbearable odor from
smelly soccer shoes was the cata-
lyst that resulted in Skunkies.
Skunkies, three-by-five cloth
satchels, eliminate odor, absorb
moisture, and prevent odor-caus-
ing bacteria.
The product, of which hun-
dreds of thousands have sold, was
the brainchild of Jill Levin and
Annemarie McCartney, both of
Voorhees. Skunkies are going on
their fourth year.
Levin said she and McCartney
were on their way to a soccer
tournament and had a bunch of
boys in the back seat who were
changing their shoes and the
smell that emanated was un-
bearable.
Levin said she learned from a
marketing guru in New York City
who said to take your worst prob-
lem and remedy it and thats how
people start businesses.
The Skunkies slogan is Get
the Stink Out.
Levin has three kids and Mc-
Cartney has four. Six are boys
and one is a girl. At first, the pair
started giving Skunkies out to
people and then some people
wanted to buy them.
We knew we were onto some-
thing, Levin said, noting they
were making them in the house at
the time.
Their big break happened
while attending an indoor soccer
tournament at City College in
New York when they gave refer-
ees Skunkies.
Also at the event was the chair-
man of the board of Bed Bath &
Beyond, whose son was playing
soccer.
Levin said he flipped over the
product.
Skunkies can be found in Bed
Bath & Beyond, Kids Footlocker
and Famous Footwear.
Also, Levin and McCartney
were recently featured on QVC.
They were featured on
www.womenentrepreneur.com and
in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
At first, Skunkies, which are
sold in pairs, were for sporting
equipment, but people have found
other applications for them like
laundry baskets or cars.

About 20 years ago, this article
never would have existed, but
today its a necessity.
School is just around the cor-
ner, and students and parents
alike will be flocking to different
school district websites to see
their class lists, download per-
mission forms, physical forms,
and even track their grades.
Parents and students visiting
the Voorhees Township Public
Schools website can fine break-
ing news and information, a cal-
endar for 2011-2012, and individ-
ual school sites at
www.voorhees.k12.nj.us.
The site has links to all five
schools in the K-8 district.
Visitors to the site are greeted
with a headlines and features
news stream, which is updated
regularly with district news.
Visitors can also check out the
Back to School link, which gives
information on the first day of
school (Sept. 8) and the activities
that students can expect during
the new school year.
Parents can also sign up for e-
alerts by registering on the web-
site, which automatically sends
out e-mail blasts to registered
users about breaking informa-
tion, such as school closings and
safety announcements.
The site also offers parents an
interesting program call parent
portal which allows visitors to
sign up for an account to track
the educational careers of their
children.
By signing up for the portal,
parents can see upcoming project
assignments, teacher notes and
grades for their children. There is
also a program called the virtual
backpack where visitors can

So now Levin and McCartney
now have sales reps across the
country.
Our product, were proud to
say, is still made in the U.S.A.,
Levin said. Right in Camden,
New Jersey.
Non-toxic and environmentally
friendly, the pair tested Skunkies
on friends and children.
Levin said kids are trading
them because of the images on
the Skunkies (there are 25 differ-
ent ones) like a peace sign or a
zebra pattern. Also, there are
three scents available: baby pow-
der, extreme sport, and candy.
They are designed to last about
six weeks depending on usage.
Levin would not reveal the
main ingredient that goes into
Skunkies.
Skunkies has been a fun road
to travel, McCartney said. We
are enjoying and taking in every
aspect of this journey. We can
only hope it keeps going.
The people we have met on the
way have been great. It gives a
new aspect to the world, she
added. People do love to help and
support other people.
McCartney said she and Levin
talk to a lot of other women entre-
preneurs and check out their
websites.
The challenging part of run-
ning a small business is the time
and energy.
McCartney is a very busy mom
with four kids in four different
schools.
Her oldest going to college this
year while her youngest is going
to second grade.
My boys play very serious soc-
cer. We travel around a lot for soc-
cer games, she said.
I love that Skunkies are being
loved by other people, McCart-
ney said.
The most rewarding part is
when someone comes up and
states how much they love
Skunkies (because) they have
been trying other items and noth-
ing has worked for the smell in
their shoes.
And what advice would Mc-
Cartney give to a new busi-
nessperson?
Believe in your product, she
said. Talk about your product to
lots of people because people love
to hear about great ideas.
Start out little; do not expect
that much at the beginning, and
then reach for the stars, McCart-
ney added.
Skunkies, which retail for any-
where from $4.99 to $8.99, can be
found online at www.skunkies.net.

W
e arent anywhere close to
being sold on a second term
for Barack Obama.
We arent even close to being excited
about any of the current GOP wanna-
bes.
Chris Christie says he doesn't want
to run for president.
Hence, we were candidate-less.
Until now.
We hereby endorse Philadelphia
Mayor Michael Nutter for president
for one simple reason: The man tells it
like it is, which is way, way more than
what we are getting from any other
politician.
A week or so ago, Nutter threw po-
litical correctness out the window. Ac-
cording to recent reports, he spoke
with passion, honesty and sincerity.
And that's more than we get from most
politicians, who are worried only
about securing votes and pandering to
their political bases.
Nutter channeled Bill Cosby when
he talked about personal responsibili-
ty and addressing some of todays is-
sues. It wasn't the usual political fluff
we hear from officeholders. He didn't
blame society or unknown, unseen,
unavoidable forces of nature.
No, he said that parents need to be
responsible for raising their kids.
Now, it's sad that saying something
so obvious, so simple, so logical gar-
ners this much attention. It's sad be-
cause we've come to expect so little out
of our elected leaders. We've come to
expect excuses, lies and cowardice.
We're so conditioned to watching sup-
posed "leaders" dodge and duck basic
questions that, when someone just
says what's on his mind and steps up
to seriously address an issue, we're
blown away.
So, Mr. Mayor, how about it? Toss
your hat into the ring. If you get Cos to
run as your VP, you're in.
Finally, a politician with sense
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter should run for the nations top job
And your pick?
Do any of the presidential hopefuls
get you excited to run to the polls

Congratulations, Kevin Comer: Hes a Jay
Seneca High School grad
chooses Blue Jays over Vandy
Kevin Comer is going straight from high
school to professional baseball, without
stopping for college along the way.
But he might go back later.
After verbally committing to attend Van-
derbilt University on a baseball scholar-
ship, the powerhouse pitcher from Seneca
High School in Tabernacle chose instead to
accept the offer from the Toronto Blue
Jays.
The Jays had chosen him all the way
back on June 6 the 57th overall pick in the
draft and Comer apparently has been
weighing his options from that day until
late Monday night...
...Yeah, a college education is important.
But they offered him $1.65 million. What
would you have done when you were 18?

South Jersey natives producing
horror flick Deer Crossing
Swerving to avoid a deer can lead to un-
foreseen consequences.
Thats the jumping-off point for local in-
dependent film-in-the-making Deer Cross-
ing, which horror movie fans are already
buzzing about.
It starts with Maggy Chancelor (played
by Laura Lynn Cottrel) who has a 6-year-
old son. They are on their way to visit fami-
ly in the Poconos, get detoured, swerve to
avoid a deer and crash. They are abducted
and held hostage for eight years. The son
escapes and tells a detective of the horrors
he and his mother suffered during that
time.
Cameraman Amel Figueroa has lived in
South Jersey most of his life. He and his
business partner, Brandon Brooks, have a
small production company called SaintSin-
ner Entertainment based in Salem.
Id like to think of myself more than
just a cameraman, Figueroa said. I
mean, I believe (Im) an artist who can easi-
ly work with other artists to create some-
thing magnificent.

What is the
AWA thinking?
The Animal Welfare Association (AWA)
of Voorhees is participating in a contest in
the hopes of winning $100,000 to be used in
part for a trap, neuter and release (TNR)
program for the community.
What community?
Given our ordinance pertaining to do-
mestic cats stating that all cats must be li-
censed and no cat may run at large, TNR is
not a method that can take place in
Voorhees.
Participating in TNR violates sections of
the ordinance, which is designed to protect
public health and welfare, and place value
on domestic animals.
What is AWA thinking by waiving the
adoption fees and attempting to adopt out
1,000 animals over the next three months?
Most animal welfare advocates realize
that the root cause of cat overpopulation is
irresponsible pet ownership.
Until folks become better pet owners, we
will continue to witness the suffering of
companion animal that do not have homes.
In this economy, when people are sur-
rendering or abandoning their pets be-
cause they cannot afford to care for them,
should there really be an incentive or lure
to adopt out animals just to win money to
save more animals?
There seems to be an unfortunate and
ironic cycle at play here. How can the AWA
conduct effective potential owner screen-
ings for 1,000 animals in less than three
months?

ing on keeping owned animals in
their homes so they are not sur-
rendered or abandoned.
The TNR method, despite the
mantra promulgated by TNR ad-
vocates, is not effective, not sup-
ported by science, does not result
in fewer feral cats outdoors, has
serious consequences for wildlife,
natural resources, public health,
and property rights, and is seen
by many as re-abandonment of
domestic cats.
If you live in Voorhees, ask
yourself if you would like to live
next door to a dozen or so man-
aged free-roaming feral cats and
then decide if TNR is something
you wish to support.
As someone who has rescued,
tamed, and placed dozens of feral
and semi-feral cats and as a vol-
unteer wildlife rehabilitator, I
could not in good conscience sup-
port a method that produces so
much collateral damage.

the Camden waterfront for a gath-
ering that the county hopes will
become an annual event.
The program was sponsored by
TD Bank, Boomerang and AMG
logistic, all Camden County busi-
nesses that work with new busi-
ness and existing businesses ex-
panding and moving into the
county.
During the program, develop-
ment and real estate opportuni-
ties in the county were highlight-
ed by Joe Thomas and Anthony
Perno on behalf of the City of
Camden.
The keynote speaker was Tra-
cye McDaniel of Choose New Jer-
sey. Choose New Jersey is an in-
dependent, privately funded and
managed non-profit created to
promote New Jersey as a place to
invest and do business. Choose
New Jersey works to advocate the
states core strengths strategic
access to local and global finan-
cial markets, a highly-trained
workforce, world-class sea and
airports, state-of-the-art energy
and communications infrastruc-
ture and elite research universi-
ties.
Choose New Jersey also mar-
kets incentive programs to attract
and retain companies that are
creating jobs and provides policy
recommendations to make New
Jersey a home for balanced
growth. A state level partnership
has been formed and is com-
prised of Choose New Jersey,
NJEDA (the states bank) and the
state Business Action Center.
In addition, a lunch and learn
series being held this fall was un-
veiled by the county economic de-
velopment director, Sandi Kelly.
The upcoming workshops are de-
signed to strengthen the working
relationship between the county
economic development program
and the real estate community in
order to further their common
goal of attracting and retaining
business in the county.
The Lunch and Learn work-
shops will feature a wide variety
of speakers from local, county
and state government presenting
practical information on the
many programs available to as-
sist businesses in expanding or
looking to locate in the county.

AUGUST 24-30, 2011 THE VOORHEES SUN 13

Irreverent, witty, outlandish and sometimes rational commentary

about important topics (or at least topics important to The Yak).
Visit http://sj.sunne.ws/author/the-yak
This year marks the 10th an-
niversary of the terrorist attacks
of Sept. 11, 2001, a day that
changed America forever. To
commemorate this occasion and
pay tribute to those we lost,
Voorhees Township will be par-
ticipating in a National Moment
of Remembrance at 1 p.m. on
Sept. 11 when all residents are
called upon to stop and remember
the victims for one full minute.
As part of the remembrance, I
have asked the Voorhees Town-
ship Police Department and Fire
Department to sound their sirens
and all Voorhees houses of wor-
ship to ring their bells as a signal
for each person to stop and re-
flect.
Almost 3,000 innocent people
were killed on that fateful day, in-
cluding more than 700 from New
Jersey.
The Fire Department of New
York suffered 343 fatalities, the
largest loss of life of any emer-
gency response agency in United
States history. The Port Authori-
ty Police Department suffered 37
fatalities, the largest loss of life of
any police force in United States
history in a single day. The New
York Police Department suffered
23 fatalities.
The impact of that day on our
public health continues through
2011, as nearly 90,000 people are at
risk of or are suffering from neg-
ative health effects as a result of
the events of that day, including
14,000 workers and 2,400 commu-
nity residents who are sick.
Tens of thousands of others
are having their health moni-
tored.
Ten years later, thousands of
brave men and women in the
United States Armed Forces re-
main in harms way defending
the United States against those
who seek to threaten us. They are
also in our thoughts and prayers.
On Sept. 11, 2001, our country
was changed forever. While we
should remember the innocent
victims every day, on Sept. 11,
2011, at 1 p.m. we will pause and
reflect. We will hug our loved
ones, bow our heads and remem-
ber.
Woofstock
Woofstock, the Voorhees Ani-
mal Orphanages biggest
fundraising event of the year, is
scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on
Saturday, Sept. 10 at Connolly
Park on Centennial Blvd. Rain
date is Sept. 11. The event will
feature festivities for animal
lovers of all ages and their
leashed pets. Crafters and
venders are welcome. Admission
is a $1 donation, but senior citi-
zens and children under 12 are
free. For more information about
Woofstock or the Animal Orphan-
age, visit www.theanimalorphan-
age.org or call 627-9111.
Summer Twilight Series
The 2011 Summer Twilight Se-
ries concludes with the town-
ships Annual Movie Night in the
Park on Saturday, Sept. 24 (rain
date Saturday, Oct. 1). The stu-
dents in the Voorhees Schools
will vote on their favorite movie
to be shown on the big screen.
The event is free and begins at
7:30 p.m. at Connolly Park.
Michael Mignogna is the mayor of
Voorhees. He can be reached at
