STATISTICAL SAMPLING PROCEDURE CONCERNING CONSUMER GOODS PRODUCTS (ABC MILITARY STANDARD 105 E/ ISO 2859 -1)

01. PRESENTATION OF A BATCH A batch is a group of homogeneous articles, with only one reference, manufactured with the some materials and corresponding to an order or part of an order. The articles will be presented as finished products, packed individually, in sealed boxes. This batch will then be presented at one location.

02. QUANTITY OF A BATCH Usually, the articles are presented in boxes: Count the number of boxes corresponding to the inspection order. Check the number of articles per box to determine the total quantity of articles. The quantity will appear on the report and the final inspection certificate.

03.SELECTING BOXES AFTER SAMPLING Out of the total number of boxes: Select at random from the batch (from top, sides, and the middle, etc.) 2N N = number of boxes

Example: One order of 380 boxes of 20 articles each= 7 600 articles 2380 =39 boxes of 20 articles These 39 boxes containing 780 articles will be taken from the batch and will serve as the basis for statistical sampling.

04. STATISTICAL SAMPLING (cf. military standard 105 E) For a batch of 7 600 articles, sample 200 items. These 200 articles will be taken from the 39 selected boxes. This means: 200/39 = 5.12 articles per box Therefore: 38 boxes multiplied by 5 articles Plus 1 box multiplied by 10 articles Total = = = 190 articles 10 articles 200 articles

05. RESPECTING STATISTICAL SAMPLING This is essential in order to satisfy statistical standards: By taking more, the client is favoured to the detriment of the supplier, By taking less, the supplier is favoured to the detriment of the client. In both cases, the statistical rules are false and the results are invalid.

06. DETERMINING DEFECTS Once the sampling has been selected, each article is to be individually inspected. At this stage two types of faults appear: 1. MAJOR DEFECT 2. MINOR DEFECT Determining major and minor defects: Major defect A major fault makes the finished product totally unsuitable for normal usage due to the materials or to the quality of execution. Minor defect A minor defect affects either the appearance or the conformity to specification of the sample without making the product unsuitable for marketing, but restricting its usage or reducing its value. Whether the defect is defined as major or minor, its imperative that: 01. The defects are specified as major or minor 02. Its location on the article is mentioned 03. The nature of the defect is defined Example: out of the sampling of 125 items and on the basis of the military standards 105-AQL, 2, 5 -4 : 7 major and 10 minor defects are permitted. The major and minor defects will be detailed (importance- nature-location)

07. INSPECTION REPORT Following the inspection, a report including the following details will be sent to the client: 01. Number of boxes selected 02. Sampling selected 03. Determination of defects 04. Inspectors comments regarding defects 05. Suppliers attitude vis a vis Green Channels 06. Products acceptance or rejection. Following client decision Green Channels will issue the final certificate. N.B. : Issue the inspection certificate if the result is in conformity with the contractual specifications.
