Lorenzo Javier B. Almario Sci 10 GG August 23, 2011 Hearing Colours We use our senses to become aware of objects.

We see light with our eys, feel pressure with our ears and hands, and sense substances with our taste and smell. All these senses require an interaction between our bodies' sensory organs and internal structures. The

interactions that are important to taste, smell, and vision all require the flow of electrons within the body. Similarly, electrical charges move through our nervous systems to inform the brain when we stub our toes or get wet in the rain. If, in the future, nanotechnology had advanced to the point that it was common for people to inject themselves as part of a new trend of enhanced multi-sensory experiences. It would be these sensations that would be affected. I believe that this new technology would take effect as a result of the nanoparticles affecting the electrical charges within our nervous system either to (A) enhance certain senses or (B) to combine them in a way similar to a condition known as synesthesia in which two or more bodily senses are coupled. In practice, sense organs called receptors receive external and internal stimuli;.When a receptor is stimulated, it generates nerve impulses that are transmitted to the spinal cord and/or the brain. If the technology was able to affect this process either by controlling the type of impulse that was being transmitted or by altering the reactions from certain stimulus it could, in effect, control the sensory process. The experiences that this new technology can cause could vary from feeling a certain euphoric high from an increase in the concentration of neurotransmitter molecules (the molecular couriers that carry messages between synapses in the brain) to sensations similar synesthesia wherein numbers are associated with locations in space and music and other sounds are perceived as being colored or having shape.

Because of the size of the nanoparticles; if this were to become the gift of choice among people in the future, the need for packaging would undoubtedly be reduced. However, this doesnt mean that it would eliminate the need for packaging entirely. Because of the nature of this new technology as a gift, one can assume that the same gift-giving standards like giftwrapping are practiced. So although the packaging is no longer necessary I feel it will still be used because of tradition. However, this is only a small portion of the applications of packaging. The others, such as the packaging of groceries and other necessities, will be largely unaffected by this new trend. However, a society that advanced would most likely have come up with a solution to those problems.

As for the nutritional aspect of this new technology, without actually modifying the food itself, we can only affect our own reaction to food and how we feel when we eat it. The new technology, with its control over our senses could alter the tastes of certain foods to make them more desirable. And beyond that, because this new technology will be affecting our nervous system, we could also modify it to stimulate the activation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin or endorphins that trigger euphoric feelings in the user. If the nanotechnology were to associate these feelings with the consumption of healthier foods then eventually we would see a societal shift towards healthier eating. Who wouldnt eat their vegetables if they tasted like chocolate and made you happy? These innovations would cause drastic changes in the ways we, as people, entertain ourselves. Restaurants would be valued on the health benefits that they provide and no longer on taste, as that gap has been filled by the new nanotechnology. The film and entertainment industry will also have to adapt. Cinemas would cater towards this new technology and take advantage of it akin to the 3D technology of today. With new ways to experience everyday life, we would also see new forms of expression and an evolution in the art scene as a result.

Most importantly would be the need to regulate this new technology. Because of its qualities as a stimulant, If people were allowed to indulge without limit there would be a lack of motivation to do other things because you can get all the pleasure you need artificially In short, technologies provide important influences on how people choose to live. They shape what people are able to see and do. And we must modify our behavior to take advantage of or avoid them to ensure the benefit of society.
