Rizal In London May 24, 1888- Rizal arrived at Liverpool, England. He stayed in Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool.

Three (3) reasons why Rizal chooses London for his place to study: 1. To improve his knowledge of the English language 2. To study and annotate Morgas Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas-(a rare copy of which he heard to be available only in the British Museum.) 3. London was a safe place for him to carry his fight against Spanish tyranny. Between May 15-31, 1888Rizal stayed in London as guest of the home of Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor. Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor- an exile of 1872 and a practicing lawyer in London. End of May 1888 he found a modest boarding place at 31 Chalcoat Crescent, Primrose Hilland became the border of the Beckett Family. Dr. Reinhold Rostthe Librarian of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and an authority on Malayan languages and customs. He called Rizal una perla de hombre [a pearl of a man] Editor of Trubners Record, a journal devoted to Asian studies. Asociacion La Solidaridad the Filipinos in Barcelona formed a patriotic society. Its primary aim to carry out crusades for Philippine reforms. It was inaugurated on December 31, 1888.Rizal became their first Honorary President. February 15, 1889 Garciano Lopez Jaena founded a patriotic newspaper known as La Solidaridad. Aims of La Solidaridad: 1. To work peacefully for political and social reforms 2. To portray the deplorable conditions of the Phil. So that Spain may remedy them; 3. To oppose evil forces of reaction and medievalism 4. To advocate liberal ideas and progress 5. To champion the legitimate aspirations of the Filipino people to life, democracy and happiness. Los Agricultures (The Filipino Farmers)first arcticle Rizal wrote in La Solidaridad. Under the pen name Dimasalang and Laong Loan. It was published on March 23, 1889, six days he left for London to Paris. February 22, 1889 - Marcelo H. del Pilar requested Rizal to wrote a letter for the Malolos women. It entitled Letter to the Young women of Malolos Getrude Beckett- was romantically linked by Rizal but Rizal did not spoil his feelings to her. Eldest of the Beckett sisters. A buxom girl with brown hair, blue eyes, and

rosy cheeks. Rizal finished 4 sculptural workswhile he was in London. One of which is the sculpture of the Beckett sister, before he leave Paris he gave it to the Beckett sister as his gift. Rizal In Paris He spent most of his time in the reading room of the Biblioteque Nationale (Natinal Library). He organizes 2 societies: 1. Kidlat Club- wa founded simply to bring together young Filipinos in the French Capital in order that they could enjoy their stay in the city during the International exposition. 2. Indios Bravos- taught its members to be proud of being Filipinos and with intense desire to pledged to their best excel in intellectual and physical capability to catch the attention of the Spaniards and win their administration and respect. The beginning of this society was inspired by American Indians, who were very proud of what they are. Adelina Bousted- a young talented quiet and unaffected lady with manners. Nelly Boustedshe was infatuated with Rizal because of his wit , talent and fine manners. When Rizal heard a news from the Phil. that his long time love Leoneor Rivera was engaged to an English engineer Mr. Kipping. He goes to Biarritz(a beach resort on the Bay of Biscay) and proposed a marriage to Nelly, but it did not materialize. He finished annotating the book of Morga and it was published but it does not have an exact date when will that book published. Rizal In Brussels Reasons why he left Paris: 1. High cost of living 2. He cannot concentrate to his second book El Filibusterismo because he cannot resist of the temptation having a night life. Jose Alberto- his companion when he moved to Brussels and lived in a modest boarding house. June 06, 1890-Soledad sent a letter to Rizal, blaming him to have caused the sorrowful plight of his parents, brothers and in-laws. July 29, 1890- he wrote Ponce that he would come back to Madrid about 3rdto 4thday. March 29, 1891- he finished the

manuscript of his second novel El Filibusterismo which he started in Calamba. May 30, 1891- he completed revising the manuscript and on the same day he informed his friend Ma. Basa that he want to went in Hongkong. June 13, 1891- the second novel was printed in Ghent, Belgium. Rizal in Hongkong November 20, 1891- the Filipino residents welcome Rizal in Hongkong also his close friend Ma. Basa. Dr. Lorenzo P. Marquez- a Portuguese ophthalmologist who had an extreme training and experience in the field of medical science dealing with diseases of the eyes. December 01, 1891-Rizal ask permission to his parents to return home. * Manuel T. Hidalgo sent Rizal a letter informing him that his friends were deported in Calamba. Before Christmas of 1891 Rizal had a reunion with his family in Hongkong and it was one of his happiest Christmas in his lifetime. March 07, 1892- Rizal went to Borneo to negotiate about the Bornean Project. The British North Borneo company offered 100,00 acres of land in Bangkoka River in Maradu Bay. LA LIGA FILIPINA- its objective was the union of the Archipelago into a compact, vigorous and homogeneous body. The constitution and by-laws inculcated that every Filipino who had at heart the best interest and welfare of the fatherland, to promote its progress. * It was a brainchild of Jose Ma. Basa * Best political writing of Rizal Jose Ma. Basa- a Filipino exile of 1872 May 1892- Rizal made up his mind to return in the Philippines. Reasons why he want to go back in the Philippines: 1. To established La Liga in Manila 2. To confer Governor General Despujol about the Bornean project June 20, 1892- he spent his 31stbirthday in Hongkong He wrote his last two letters, it was sealed and addressed to his friend Dr. Marquez for safekeeping and to be opened after his death. 1stletter- addressed to his family, bethen and friends.

2ndletter- addressed to the Filipinos. June 21, 1892-Rizal wrote a third letter to Governor General Despujol informing him of his coming in Manila and placing himself under the protection of the Spanish government. June 26, 1892-he arrived in Manila and was accompanied by his sister Lucia.
