Breaking the cycles of homelessness, poverty and domestic violence.

In the 19 years of our existence, Rainbow Village has become a visible and highly respected leader in providing long-term transitional housing and support services to homeless families with children in North Metro Atlanta. While there are many agencies in the area that provide some of the services we offer, Rainbow Village remains the only program with a comprehensive approach addressing the full complement of physical, emotional, financial and education needs of families who have suffered the trauma of homelessness, poverty, and/or domestic violence.

Our Vision
To be a national model of an educational and holistic approach to breaking the cycles of homelessness, poverty and domestic violence.

Our Model
Each Rainbow Village family is unique. We work with each family to understand their past, identify key areas of need, set individual goals and help them craft individualized action plans for their families that will bring long-term selfsufficiency within reach. Our program is well developed and offers a proven combination of community, education, and individual support that enables success.

Our Mission
To transform lives for homeless families with children of North Metro Atlanta through a community based transitional housing program that promotes self-sufficiency.

Adult Programs
The overarching objective of the Rainbow Village program is to facilitate a change in behavior in the families that seek our assistance. A fundamental component of achieving this goal is to help the adult heads of household identify the learned behaviors that contributed to their homelessness, while providing the environment, opportunities and resources that will allow them to replace those limiting behaviors with more adaptive ones.

Adults in residence at Rainbow Village attended more than 80 life-skills classes this year. The Adult Life-Skills classes fell into six general categories.

Personal Development Financial Management Parenting & Family Issues Home Management Career Development Fiscal Responsibility

Having successfully completed these classes, as well as weekly group counseling sessions, our residents were far better equipped to successfully break the cycles of homelessness, poverty and domestic violence in their lives and begin anew. We encourage graduates to come back at any time to reinforce their learning and offer support to current residents that are trying to put these new skills into practice.

Heathers Story
I wanted to give up but Rainbow Village wouldnt let me. I was so lost. They loved me through the worst time in my life. There was always someone there. They helped me realize that I control my own destiny.
Heather was a criminal justice student with a bright future ahead of her. She was happily married and learned, at age 23, that she was pregnant with her first child. Motherhood put her education on the back burner. She had to go to work to help support their growing family. The years passed quickly and before she knew it she had four wonderful children; but life threw her some big curves along the way. She and her first husband divorced and Heather found herself saddled with big student loans to repay and no degree to enable her to get a job that would support the needs of her family. She remarried but her second marriage ended with a restraining order and a desperate flight to the protective walls of the Partnership Against Domestic Violence. Heather was doing everything she could to hang on and keep her family together. It was then she found Rainbow Village. Heathers plan was to be back on her feet in about six months but then her world began to unravel. Her second husband filed legal charges against her and launched an aggressive custody battle. As she fought for her family, Rainbow Villages network of support kicked into high gear. We helped her get legal representation and the counseling support that she needed. She lost her kids for a short time but Rainbow Village stood by her and helped her fight. In the end she was able to bring two of her four kids back home. Her oldest daughter now lives in Canada. She continues to fight to regain custody of her 7-year-old son but cherishes the never-ending words of encouragement and support she received from the Rainbow Village community along the way. In 2010 Heather stepped out on her own again and remains very active in our graduate program. On her refrigerator is posted her personal mission statement that she wrote on January 19, 2010 during one of our Life Skills classes. It reads, To realize I control my own destiny by my words, attitude and actions. Heather shares, I used to be full of fear and worry. I no longer worry about what I cant control. I take no day for granted. This is just something I had to go through. It was not because of anything I did; it was done to me.

Children & Youth Programs

As we strive to break the cycles of homelessness, poverty and domestic violence for generations to come, our greatest opportunity is with the children. Ideally children are taught good habits, values, and critical life skills by their parents, but often the life circumstances of our families have made that challenging. Most of the children we serve have not been able to experience those things every child should be able to take for granted. Many are hungry for a sense of safety and security, encouragement, guidance and people to trust. Our 2010 Children and Youth Enrichment programs offered a wonderful opportunity for Rainbow Village children to heal, learn, and better themselves through many exciting programs designed just for them. We modeled for them good behavior, set new expectations of them, and guided them to make good choices so they can be an integral part of breaking the destructive cycles in their families.

Big Recess
Many of the children at Rainbow Village have seen and experienced things that most of us could never imagine. Big Recess was held one night each week and was specifically designed to give them time to blow off steam and just be kids. Its all about play and adventure at Big Recess. Volunteers of all ages added to the excitement with special holiday and birthday celebrations.

Character Building Classes

One evening each week Rainbow Village children participated in an educational program that focused specifically on values, virtues, good decision-making, positive attitudes, giving back and more. We laid the groundwork for them to take away a strong value system, high standards of behavior, and sound principles theyll carry with them for a lifetime.

Direct results we saw from our work with our children and youth this year include:

After School
Every day after school Rainbow Village children found tremendous love and support at our After School Program. We offered healthy snacks, playground time, and fun creative projects. Then we got down to business with homework support and tutoring to help them reach their full potential academically. After School time was full of lots of praise and encouragement, as well as a great time with friends.

Improved study skills and standardized test results Improved reading, comprehension, and math skills Improved school attendance and academic success Increased high school and post-secondary graduation rates Increased awareness of their responsibilities in the family Improved behavior and social skills Enhanced value systems Restoration of trust and hope

2010 Summer Camp Adventures

Thanks to the faithful members of the Duluth Rotary Club all schoolaged children at Rainbow Village enjoyed the simple pleasures of just being a kid during the 2010 summer break.
The Duluth Rotary Club hosted several fundraising events throughout the year to fund scholarships for Rainbow Village kids to attend the Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation Day Camp. Duluth Rotary Club members kicked their summer adventures off right by hosting a Family Picnic for all of our residents to enjoy in early June. It proved to be a summer full of fun in the sun that they will all remember for a lifetime. We are so proud to report that one of our teens received the camp award for the Most Improved Counselor in Training! The support of our local Rotarians means so much. This opportunity would not have been possible for our kids without their generous support.

Volunteer Impact
Our village model engaged more than 800 volunteers in 2010, along with countless community partners. Our volunteers brought many different talents and gifts to share. Their insights and suggestions were a big part of our visioning process. They have encouraged and inspired us to dream big.

Thanks to the help and support of so many throughout our community we are able to deliver our programs in more depth, more often, utilizing fewer operational resources. With such amazing visionaries by our side helping to further our mission, we are moving forward at a pace that we never dreamed possible. There are truly many hands and many hearts helping us prepare the way. Here are just some of the many ways our volunteers served in 2010:

Our Community Partners

Rainbow Village is blessed to have a tremendous network of community partners that collaborate with us, share skills and resources, offer in-kind services, volunteer, and simply pray for us. They bring new ideas to the table, push us to try new things, and enable us to offer more to our families than we ever could without them. These partners were wonderful to work alongside us this past year to care for our families and expand our thinking so we can be more efficient and effective in preparing the way to serve even more families.

Laying a Foundation of Support:

The Hudgens Family Foundation has been supporting Rainbow Village to lay a solid foundation to stand on for many years.
In 1997 we had the privilege to sit down with Scott Hudgens himself to explain the needs of homeless families and paint the long-range vision for Rainbow Village. He challenged us to think big when he and his wife Jacqueline awarded us a generous $500,000 donation which enabled us to buy our apartment complex in Duluth. Soon thereafter his foundation granted us an additional $500,000 to buy the adjacent property which prepared the way for us to dream even bigger. In 2010 the Hudgens Family Foundation enthusiastically endorsed and embraced our vision of expansion once again with a lead gift of $1,000,000 to our Building Strong Communities Capital Campaign that will enable us to build an all-inclusive village and triple our capacity. The Hudgens Family Foundation caught our vision from day one and continues to be a vital partner that is helping to prepare the way for us to expand our services so we can have an even greater impact on the lives of those we touch.

Leading by Example:
As we strive to teach our residents about sound budgeting, strong work ethic, making wise investments, dreaming big, the value of family and community, and having faith in God to see them through, Clyde and Sandra are leading by example.
Their leadership and involvement at Rainbow Village is grounded in a message of faith, hope and love and they are clearly living out the great commission to Love One Another. Clyde and Sandra have a heart to reach out to the lost and help them find new hope and promise. They have been two of the biggest champions for our families this past year. Theirs was the first gift on the table when we unveiled the vision for our new village. They clearly wanted to send the message with their $1,000,000 dollar lead gift that the lives of those we serve are precious and worthy of investing in.
Rainbow Village 2010 Annual Report | 13

Corporate Investors:
Our relationship with Siemens began several years back when Cathe Reams, Director of Marketing for Siemens, selected Rainbow Village to be the benefactor of their Siemens All Hands Day corporate service project.
Several hundred Siemens volunteers worked for ten hours to make our communities even more beautiful. Cathe then submitted their volunteer effort to Siemens Foundation for a Community Excellence Award for recognition of their local community outreach efforts. As a result, Rainbow Village received our first grant from Siemens Caring Hands. Since then more than $10,000 in grant monies have followed and the relationship with Siemens volunteers continues to grow. Siemens employees were spotted throughout this past year cleaning, painting and doing other fix-it-up projects at our properties. They are also always one of the first to sign up to adopt our families for the holidays. They certainly went above and beyond when they purchased, assembled and gifted 21 bicycles so that each and every Rainbow Village child would have a new bicycle for Christmas. It was an amazing feat and it proved to be one of the best Christmas Days ever for Rainbow Village children. Siemens continues to amaze us with their philanthropic spirit. They are phenomenal corporate citizens serving as true role models for other companies to follow.

Angels Among Us:

Angel investors provide vital operational support to Rainbow Village through ongoing monthly contributions. These gifts provide a steady, dependable source of income that allows us to stay focused on our mission and long-term goals.
In 2010 we were blessed to grow our Angel investor base by more than 40 Angels. Dr. Tony and Lori Landis are some of the angels among us that recognize how much monthly Angel donations help Rainbow Village keep costs down, stay fiscally sound, operate more efficiently, and strategically focus our resources to provide the greatest impact. Tony and Lori support Rainbow Village financially because they strongly believe in and support our mission. They understand that as a non-profit we have day-to-day cash flow needs that are equally as important to meet as long-term capital needs. We continue to work hard to show them a great return on their investment in Rainbow Village on all fronts.

Our In-Kind Champion

Champion Self Storage on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Norcross generously donated a climate-controlled storage unit to Rainbow Village this year to enable us to have a safe, secure place to store our educational resources, arts and crafts materials, welcome home box supplies, toiletries, small appliances, linens, housewares and more.
Their in-kind donation allowed us to return more than $3,000 back into our operational budget because we did not have to incur annual storage expense. We are grateful to Chris Ward at Champion Self Storage for being a such a generous corporate partner that helped us keep our valuable supplies well protected and in reserve so we are fully prepared to serve future Rainbow Village families.

Louise Stanton Education Fund

In 2010 Russell Stanton decided he wanted to make a memorial gift in honor of his mother that would have a lasting impact at Rainbow Village.
Louise Stanton did not graduate from high school and she often claimed it was the greatest regret of her life. Knowing this, it only seemed fitting that Russell establish a scholarship fund in his mothers name that would enable Rainbow Village residents to have greater access to higher education. The fund is used to help our residents obtain their GEDs, get the tutoring support they need, purchase books and supplies for school, cover testing and application costs, supplement tuition, attend certification courses, and more. Thanks to the Louise Stanton Education Fund our residents have greater opportunities than ever before to meet their educational goals that will allow them to better prepare the way for their futures.

Special Events Highlights

In 2010 Rainbow Village hosted two major special events, the annual Golf Classic and Gala, that offered great friend-raising and fund-raising opportunities to our organization.
In addition to these events, Rainbow Village was the benefactor of many community-based charity events hosted by several civic and social organizations. We are truly grateful to all who selected us as their charity of choice this year and allowed us the opportunity to spread the word about the needs of homeless families in North Metro Atlanta.

There were many other organizations in our community that we strategically collaborated with to deliver services to our families as needed this past year. We believe strongly in staying focused on our mission and partnering with others to enhance our services rather than duplicating services already available. In doing so, we continue to keep operational costs down while continuing to expand the support we extend to families. Our Vision for the Future

The most difficult challenge we face as an organization is responding to and meeting the needs of the ever-growing number of homeless families in our community.
The average age of a homeless person is 9 years old. This affects many generations to come because the traumatization to the children will have a long-term effect if not properly addressed. Since 2008 we have been preparing the way to unveil our long-term plan to expand our village allowing us to triple the number of families we can serve at one time. Over the next 3-5 years we will build in The average age of a homeless person is 9 three phases a new campus in Duluth that years old. This affects many will house and support 30 families. The new generations to come because the campus will include a much-needed on-site traumatization to the children will Education, Recreation, and Day Care Center, have a long-term effect if not as well as a Family Service Center and 30 properly addressed. new apartment homes. The new village will allow us to say yes to many more families in need and have a significant impact addressing the homelessness issue in North Metro Atlanta. The groundwork has successfully been laid to bring this vision to reality. The plan is designed. The strategic planning is complete. The feasibility study is complete and the campaign leadership team is in place.

Construct two 6-unit apartment buildings and on-site Family Service Center. This allows us to bring all current Rainbow Village families onto one new campus and take advantage of some economies of scale with all residents in one location. Knowing that community is essential to the success of the Rainbow Village model, this step allows us to create one centralized community for transforming families. Construction to begin in 2011.

Build an Education, Recreation, and Day Care Facility on the current Rainbow Village Duluth property. This building will house the Rainbow Village After-School Program, the Adult Learning Center for Life Skills and Workforce Development, Day Care Facility, and a kitchen and cafeteria where community meals can be served. Construction anticipated in 2012.

Build three new apartment buildings designed to increase our capacity from 10 to 30 families. The new units will house families of two to six individuals, providing safe, comfortable living space for roughly 60-180 individuals at a time, depending on the ages and the genders of the children in each family. Each apartment unit includes a living room, kitchen, two or three bedrooms and one or two baths.
