The firm he left behind would go on to become Mobil Oil. Wakefield rented three small rooms on the third floor of 27 Cannon Street in the heart of London, and it was there, on March 19th 1899, that the firm of C.C.Wakefield & Co opened its doors for the first time.

In 1909, the company began production of a new automotive lubricant named "Castrol" (a contraction of castor oil, from which it was made). The company developed specific oil applications for various applications of the new internal combustion engine, including cars, motorcycles, and aircraft. The original 3 grades of oil being CW for cars, C for motorcycles andR for aircraft and racing engines, the castrol oil being responsible for the noticeable exhaust odor of early aircraft rotary engines. In 1966, Castrol was acquired by British oil company Burmah, which was renamed Burmah-Castrol. In 2000, Burmah-Castrol was acquired by the then BP Amoco plc (now renamed BPplc). Gulf Oil International Today

Gulf is a large and growing family of companies, united under the common and famous symbol, the Gulf Brand. Gulf brand operations is present in over 100 countries worldwide excluding USA, Spain & Portugal focusing on lubricant and fuel products and services. The operations vary in size and in structure but the universal linking factor is the iconic and historic Gulf brand that links all of these businesses. Below is an insight into Gulf today and its historic link with top line motor-sport, especially that of the infamous Le Mans 24hr.

In 1963, John Wyer, executive vice-president of Gulf Oil at the time was offered the post of residential manager, special vehicles activity, responsible for the GT40 program. 1964: The Birth of the GT40 It was designed under the direction of Roy Munn but in early 1964 the test at Monza revealed serious stability problems, Wyer believed it to be aerodynamic, however Lunn believed it could be cured by adjusting the rear suspension geometry, Lunn's opinion prevailed, proving to be disastrous for the GT40. In April 1964, at the Le Mans test weekend, the two Gulf Ford GT40s that were competing both lost control and crashed, resulting in an inquest at Slough, and embarrassment for the company. Following the inquest Wyer was allowed more influence over the design of the car and immediately had spoilers fitted to the cars, much like upside-down plane wings forcing the air to pass over them pushing the car down into the track, and the effect was electrifying', one driver reporting that he cold take his hands off the wheel at 170mph and it glided on with total stability. Three Gulf Ford GT40s were entered into the 1964 24-hour Le Mans race, however none of them withstood the pressures of the race, none of them completing it. On one the engine bay dramatically caught fire, due to the fuel hose being made to the wrong specification, out of nylon not tygon, unable to bear the extreme heat and pressure, it melted, proving devastating with the engine up in flames. On the second Gulf ford GT40, the gearbox failed and on the third the transmission failed, a grave result for the GT40. The program director Leo Beebe, unsurprisingly was not impressed and insisted on another race to redeem themselves. With only three weeks to prepare for the 12-hour Reims race, the outlook was bleak for the team. With no time to find alternatives for its weaknesses or modify the gearbox, the race proved disastrous once again, two of the cars dropping out with broken transmissions and the third with a broken crankshaft. In an attempt to salvage what promise was left of the project, Wyer was summoned to a special vehicles committee in Detroit, with the Americans wanting to reform the chassis and install 7-litre engines in the Gulf Ford GT40s. Len Bailey designed the new front body for the GT40s which reduced the drag coefficient of the car from 0.41 to 0.35, however in

the 1965 Le Mans, they fared no better and retired after two hours with cylinder head gasket failures and another with a broken ZF gearbox again, tragically, no Gulf Ford GT40s remained on the race by nightfall.

Gulf Oil in famous for being one of the original members of the seven sisters, the original American oil companies and continues to provide high quality products and services throughout the world. Gulf Oil was founded in 1901 at the time of the discovery of oil at Spindletop, Texas. Gulf promoted the idea of branded product sales by selling gasoline in containers and from pumps marked with the distinctive Orange Disk logo. The Gulf orange disk has grown to an iconic status since in creation, enjoying strong brand recognition with people from all parts of the world. Gulf Oil grew steadily in the inter-war years with the company being characterised by its vertically integrated business activities. Gulf was a strong oil company with operations including exploration, production, transport, refining and marketing. It also involved itself in diversified industries such as petrochemicals and automobile component manufacturing. Gulf has always been at the corner stone of commercial and technical innovations. One of Gulf's initial visionary steps was the introduction of the first drive-in service station in 1911. Other Gulf moves included introducing complimentary road maps, over-water drilling and catalytic cracking refineries. Such visionary thinking is essential and remains the corner stone for the growth of Gulf Oil. Gulf has experienced steady growth and continued to do so after the company was bought by Chevron for its US operations in 1984. In other parts of the world (non-US) Gulf Oil is widely recognized under the flagship - Gulf Oil International Ltd. The Hinduja Group, a private Indian business family acquired the rights to the Gulf brand after the company was acquired by Chevron in the US.

Royal Dutch Shell is the largest and most diversified international investor in India's energy sector among all global integrated oil companies with nearly US$1 billion invested already. Shells presence in India goes back about 80 years, when it operated in the country as the pioneering oil distribution company, Burmah Shell. Set up in 1928, the Burmah-Shell Oil Storage and Distributing Company of India Limited began operations with import and marketing of Kerosene. It pioneered rural marketing by reaching out to people even in remote villages to ensure supply of kerosene. With motor cars, came canned petrol, followed by service stations which were built in the 1930s. 15th October 1932, when civil aviation arrived in India, the company fueled J.R.D. Tata's historic solo flight from Karachi to Bombay (Juhu) via Ahmedabad. The company introduced LPG as a cooking fuel to the Indian home in the mid-1950s. Besides selling bitumen, the company pioneered desert road construction in India.
