Materials and Teaching Props

While this unit requires quite a bit of preparation, the same two games are used each of the four weeks. The Great Kid Game is used in each lessons Creative Bible Teaching and the Unit 2 Life Application Game (its name changes each week) is used in the Life Application Activity segment of each lesson. Only the lesson-specific props change from week to week.

Notes:

Teaching Area
This unit is taught using The Great Kid Game. You will play the game by moving along a giant game board. Along the way, you will stop at the Bible Story Square, the Lalalalala (sung like a musical scale) Square, the Silly Willy Square (where the kids will hear a joke, do a silly dance, or make a silly face), the Question Mark Square, and the Thinking Hat Square. The game board, created from poster board, is hung on the wall, or can rest on an easel or against a box in the middle of the teaching area. There are five large gift bags placed randomly around it, one gift bag for each stop. The bags hold fun props related to or needed for the game. There is also a stool, chair, or box for the teacher to sit on, by an easel or box used to hold a Bible storybook. A Helper mans a CD player in the back of the room to play music and optional sound effects. Be sure to practice each lesson in advance.

Music and

Sound Effects

The suggested songs are available on the Reach Up High and Touch the Sky CDs, and the lesson sound effects are included on the Fall Quarter Sound Effects #1 CD. (There are two sound effects CDs for the Fall Quarter; be sure you pull the first one.) Make sure your Helper is prepared to cue up and play the necessary sound and music for each lesson.

Directions for Bible Story Book

For Lesson 5, print out the Baby Moses story pictures (Lesson 5 LG 4Lesson 5 LG 9). Attach them together at one corner using staples, or punch a hole and use brads or string. Attaching them at one corner only will allow for easier turning of the pages. If desired, create a cover for the storybook using cardstock paper.

Directions for The Great Kid Game Game Board

Print out the Game board graphics (small version) found in the Lesson 5 folder on the Fall Quarter Visual CD. Cut them out, and consider coloring them as well. In the top right corner of the game board, paste the Start graphic (Lesson 5 Game board 1). Use color sticker dots to create a trail from the starting point to the end space (see above for sample). Place two color dots under the start place, diagonally. Next, paste down the Silly Willy graphic (Lesson 5 Game board 3). Place three color dots to the right, then paste down the Bible Story graphic (Lesson 5 Game board 5b). Next, place one color dot to the right and paste down the Lalalalala graphic (Lesson 5 Game board 6). Next, place three color dots going down to the right of the Lalalalala graphic, and then glue down the Thinking Hat graphic (Lesson 5 Game board 4). Place three color dots below the Thinking Hat graphic. Next, paste down the Question Mark graphic (Lesson 5 Game board 2). Finally, place two color dots to left of the Question Mark graphic and paste down the Finish graphic (Lesson 5 Game board 7). For the game piece, use a circle cut from brightly colored poster board. Since the game board will be on an easel, use a piece of sticky tack or similar temporary adhesive to affix the game piece to the game board during the lesson.

Directions for Unit 2 Life Application Game Board

Create one game board to use throughout this unit during each lessons Life Application Activity. Start with a sheet of poster board. Print out the Start and Finish graphics (Lesson 5 Game board 1 and Lesson Game board 7) and game card pictures (Lesson 5 SG 14a, 15a, 16a, 17a, 18a). Cut out and glue the pictures to the poster board and draw out the game board with a marker in the pattern shown above. Remember to save this board each week for use during the lessons application activity: God Is With Us! game (Lesson 5), God Want Us to Help Others game (Lessons 6 and 7), and God Wants Me to Obey game (Lesson 8).

Helpful Hints
Be sure to give the kids an opportunity to get to know you by telling them about yourself or letting them ask you questions. When playing the games during the lesson, invite children to count along with you as you move the game piece. If your class has a lot of excess energy, ask kids to stand up and jump or twist their bodies to move the game piece along. As parents come to pick up their children, remember to introduce yourself and share with each parent some of the positive things you saw in their child.
