Members learn how to save a life

By Sherrie Algren

Sherrie Algren is a registered nurse and serves on the new committee. She led the 4-hour training sessions during four days in August. With her leadership, members learned how to identify signs of a heart attack and other emergency events and initial actions in treating serious and minor health problems. Kudos to the participants who selflessly gave up their time so that they can help others in need. The AED and First Aid kit are located in an alarmed cabinet near the bathroom

Statistics show an AED, along with CPR, greatly improves the odds of surviving a cardiac arrest (from less than 5% to almost 74%). Our church recently purchased an AED and put together a committee to oversee training and use of the device.

Oh God, make speed to save us.

Times of crises are a part of life. Unfortunately nothing makes us feel more alone than being in crises. Our souls experience unrest and it can seem as if we will never get a break from the stress. In the midst of such trying times it is especially difficult to hear and see that Gods presence remains close by. Like Peter, whose focus shifts from Jesus, then to himself, and then back to the Lord, we reach out and ask God to save us. This is the tenth year after 9/11. I remember exactly where I was the moment the news showed the premeditated attack on the Twin Towers. I remember watching in disbelief and thinking it was just some kind of terribly odd accident. Later that morning we set a TV in the office of the church and people started coming to the church during lunch hour and throughout the rest of the day for prayer and consolation. Prayers were circulated from the national church office and through helpful resources like Forward Movements Day By Day. The editor of this devotional booklet responded to the 9/11 tragedy this way: One thing we know: God will not leave us comfortless. The strength of such comfort is especially available through the unity and common life we are given as we pray together in the days ahead. When disaster strikes, in any form, we may be knocked back on our heels or even completely off our feet. But then, and with Gods help there is always a but then, we find that the church community around us and the Holy Spirit find their way into our troubles. We recognized the resurrected One through the hospital visits, the casseroles brought over, and the cards that remind us that no tragedy can separate us from the love of Christ. The Twin Towers went down that day and we mourn the loss of life and the many, many lives that would never be the same again. It is good for us to remember 9/11 with that iconic image of the cross that stood in the midst of the rubble. It is also important for us to pray for our enemies, (see BCP pg. 816), and for the continuing restoration of all of Gods creation. We do move forward. We act out of faith not when we come to some kind of totally clear understanding of the situation, but in the very midst of lifes rubble. We see God in the closeness of others and the acts of kindness from people we dont even know. We meet others at the
Contact The Rev. Jon Hall at jhall@stmartinschurch.org

foot of the cross. Across the street from the Twin Towers memorial is little St. Pauls Episcopal Church. It was miraculously spared in the falling debris. This is the same house of worship that served communion to George Washington and our countrys founding leaders. The real power of who America is was never housed in buildings of commerce and business. The real power was in the faith that predated the 9/11 attack and can be seen today at St. Pauls in the thousands of prayers posted inside the chapel walls or in the deep scratch marks on the pews where the firefighters and EMTs laid down their oxygen tanks to regroup and press on. As we remember 9/11, where we were and how it changed us, may we pray that whenever we get that sinking feeling of despair, our focus would shift to the cross of Christ and our strength would be in the One who saves us everyday.

Blessings, Fr. Jon

us. Dont worry; we have a bell for you! I am certain there are others of you in the congregation who play musical instruments. Please make yourself known to me. The more people we can have involved in the music program the better. The choirs and instrumentalists in any church are some of the most dedicated and giving people there are. These people enrich our worship weekly, helping all of us to offer up our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to God (Book of Common Prayer, p. 342). I give thanks for all of you who have participated in the past, and I look forward to working and worshipping with you in the future.

Its time to make music! Fall is upon us and it is time to get choirs started. There are two opportunities for you as September arrives: The Sanctuary Choir rehearses at 7 p.m. on Thursday nights, beginning September 1, and will sing at the 10:15 service beginning September 11. All are invited to join. If you havent sung with the choir (or any choir) for a while, consider coming out and joining us. Tintinnabulation, our bell choir, meets on Wednesday nights at 6:30 beginning September 7. If you have some musical ability but are not a singer (or would like to double dip and be in two ensembles) we would like to have you join

Where are you staying?

By Heidi Gioia, Youth Ministries Director

To Apples and talking just like we do. I imagine how this ministry of presence transforms these disciples faith and their relationship with God. Just like the disciples, our youth are curious. They too want to experience what their faith is all about. How does all this stuff we talk about in church relate to their day-to-day lives? As such, were called to offer a place for those conversations and take the time to listen. And Jesus reply: Come & see. Jesus invites them in. Its only two of them, not an impressive crowd. Jesus doesnt wait until he reaches critical mass. He ministers to who is present now. How instructive. Likewise, our youth leaders have made the commitment to be present.

munity to invite. But here, perhaps, maybe the roles can reverse a bit and we adults can ask the question, Where do you stay? We can enter in to the worlds of teens and see what makes them tick. Then, we can be a centering voice to reflect on how God works through their life experiences, joys and frustrations. A ministry of presence, thats the core of our mission in Youth Ministries this year.

In the first chapter of John, two disciples follow Jesus. He asked them, What are you looking for? They said, Rabbi, where are you staying? Come and see, he replied. So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent the rest of the day with him. (John 1:35-39) A ministry of presence, thats what Jesus offers these disciples. What did they mean by where do you stay? I think they were curious, trying to figure out what made Jesus tick. They wanted to see first -hand who this Lamb of God was. An image of our senior high room flashes when I think about this story. I can picture Jesus and these unnamed disciples watching a movie, playing a game of Apples

Legacy Giving: In my own words...

By Murrell Cunningham

there is an offertory sentence and a bidding which have great meaning for me personally: But do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God,

Spirit that enables us to search for ways to do good, to share what we have been given and to make sacrifices that are pleasing to God. There are so many ways

July 10th and 17th Father Jons sermons described the meaning of the order of Episcopal Worship. His second sermon dealt with the last part of worship which is Holy Communion, which he noted begins with the offertory just after the passing of the peace. This caught my attention since I am involved with the Stewardship Committee and the Legacy Committee, but even more because I am Christian. As a matter of fact, I find it thrilling that giving opens the door in our worship from the reading and preaching of the Word to the celebration of Holy Communion. It gives us direct access to participate in the Holy Eucharist with our tithes and offerings. In the Book of Common Prayer

Murrell shares a smile at a recent church event with Abbey.

Hebrews 13;15,16 BCP 367. Let us with gladness present the offerings and oblations of our life and labors to the Lord. (BCP 367) This reminds me that there are so many ways we can share what we have when we pause to remember that everything we have is from God. It is our love for God, Jesus, and the Holy

His Church. Time, talent, money, service to others, volunteer work the list is endless. Have you considered giving to St. Martins Legacy Fund? Have you remembered St. Martins in your will or estate plans? Only God knows what new ministries may lie in store for future generations because our generation cared enough to give!

Christian stewardship is the grateful and responsible use of God's gifts in the light of God's purpose as revealed in Jesus Christ. Christian stewards, empowered by the Holy Spirit, commit themselves to conscious, purposeful decisions.

banks will still find ways to make money. Is St. Martins the only check you write? Do you have to pay for your checks or are you charged a fee for each check you write? With electronic giving, your pledge is automatically withdrawn from your personal bank account and transferred directly to St. Martins operating account. So easy! Your finance committee is currently working to evaluate how implementing electronic giving will benefit St. Martins and its parishioners. Be on the look-out for more information in the fall regarding this E-citing program!

Okay, lets be honest. Who of us has placed two envelopes into the collection plate at once? Three envelopes? What if you could feel confident that St. Martins is receiving your gift of treasure even when youre unable to give your gift of time? Perhaps you are a snow bird or maybe you work Sunday mornings. Then electronic giving may be for you! You may have heard of the swipe-fee reform that recently took effect limiting the amount of income banks receive from retailers accepting their debit cards. Mystics and their teachings

By The Rev. Emily Hillquist Davis

Whats a mystic? One definition: A mystic is a person with a hunger for experiencing God im-mediately (with no mediation, nothing in the way, nothing between God and your soul, the core of your being.) This is the experience out of which Peter knows about Jesus, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. (Matthew 16:16) Mystics say things like: Its a risky thing to pray, and the danger is that our very prayers get between God and us. The great thing in prayer is not to pray, but to go directly to God. If saying your prayers is an obstacle to prayer, cut it out. The best way to pray is: stop. Let prayer pray within you, whether you know it or not. This means a deep awareness of our true inner identity. It implies a life of faith, but also of doubt.
- Thomas Merton (1915-1968) in Monastic Studies (Mount Saviour Monastery, Pine City, NY: 1969)

And: God enters into you with all that is his, as far as you have stripped yourself of yourself in all things. It is here that you should begin, whatever the cost, for it is here that you will find true peace, and nowhere else.
- Meister Eckhart (ca.1260-1329), Talks of Instruction

And: We awaken in Christs body as Christ awakens our bodies, () For if we genuinely love Him, we wake up inside Christs body Where all our body, all over, every most hidden part of it, is realized in joy as Him, and He makes us, utterly, real, and everything that is hurt, everything that seemed to us dark, harsh, shameful, maimed, ugly, irreparably damaged, is in Him transformed and recognized as whole, as lovely, and radiant in his light he awakes as the Beloved in every last part of our body.
- Symeon the New Theolgian (949-1022), published my favorite little book in The Enlightened Heart: An anthology of Sacred Poetry, edited by Stephen Mitchell.

I hope these feed your mind and soul, as they do mine. ~emily+

Tough economy places high demand on generosity

St. Martins helps Circle of Concern provide assistance
Thanks to everyone at St. Martins who donated to the recent school supplies drive and our on-going food drive for Circle of Concern. Your generosity has never been in higher demand than it is now. Back to School Project Circle of Concern reports a record number of children were eligible for their Back To School project this year. Your donations were added to many others to help fill and distribute backpacks to more than a thousand children in our area. Food Pantry Sunday Along with the Back To School project, St. Martins also collects food items for Circles food bank, which is serving more West County residents than ever before. In June, the agency fed more than 2,000 people with more than 3,200 bags of food. You can help keep the food banks shelves well-stocked by bringing non-perishable items to church on the second Sunday of each month (September 11 is our next Food Pantry Sunday). Current food needs include:
