Dear Student, We welcome you to the course English for Specific Purposes (5667) of MA TEFL programme. This course focuses on new trends in the teaching of English language to professionals. It includes discussion on development of ESP, need analysis, material development and adaptation, role of ESP teacher, etc. Hopefully, you will find this course interesting and beneficial in your own context. Following the assignment schedule, you have to submit two assignments. The first assignment is theory based whereas the second one is practical/ project. Remember that 70% attendance of tutorials and presentation of second assignment are mandatory. Students failing to do/complete either of its components will be declared fail even if he/she has passed the written examination.

ASSIGNMENT No. 1
Total Marks: 100 Note: All questions carry equal marks. Q.1 How did the concept of ESP emerge? Trace out the developments of ESP as an accepted phenomenon in ELT. Q.2 Design a detailed profile of your class and identify their needs for learning English. Q.3 Go through Reading Passage 6 (Reader) and Chapter 2 (Guide). Design a need analysis proforma of your own keeping in view the local context. Q.4 What do we mean by the term Course Designing? If you are asked to design a course for your students, which approach would you follow and why? Justify your answers with arguments. Q.5 What are different approaches to language teaching and how do they affect ESP course designing process? Q.6 What are the characteristics of good learning materials? Select at least two text and analyze them in detail. Q.7 Each profession has got specific vocabulary and its uses. Make a list of at least 20 words relating to any profession and design two activities to teach selected vocabulary. Q.8 Select at least three texts relating to three different professions and then design one activity on each text focusing teaching an language skills. Pass Marks: 40

Q.9 What do you think whether an ESP teacher has some extra qualities as compared to a teacher of general English. If yes, enlist and discuss such qualities. Q.10 Explain the what, who, how and when of ESP course evaluation.

ASSIGNMENT No. 2
Total Marks: 100 This assignment is based on a research-oriented activity. You are required to carry out a research and prepare a brief report on your findings in one of the areas given below. You will submit the report to the tutor within the scheduled period. Then you will have to present the same in the course/project presentation workshop (the schedule of the course/project presentation workshop will be intimated by the tutor or the Regional office concerned). The assignment carries 100 marks; 40 marks for the written report and 60 for the presentation. Select any one (in consultation with your tutor) of the following topics for research report: 1. Design and conduct questionnaires among students (40) of HSSC level regarding their needs. Analyse the data and make recommendations for introducing separate ESP course for medical, engineering, commerce and computer science students. Attach filled in questionnaire with your report. Select a group of professionals (in consultation with your tutor), conduct a need analysis, design objectives and course outline. Outline a course keeping in view their needs and prepare at least two lesson plans. Execute these lesson plans and record the feedback. Attach need analysis and lesson plans with your report. Find out an ESP book and critically analyze its content, presentation, activities, assessment, etc. Write a review of the book with appropriate examples from the book. Attach printouts of the tile and relevant pages of the book with your report. Design outline of a teacher training module (10 hours) focusing on teaching ESP. Execute a chunk o the same in your own institution and record the feedback on its effectiveness. Attach outline of the module and feedback forms with your report. Select an area and collect a list of 50 words related to one specific area of ESP. Design two lesson plans based on the vocabulary. Teach and get feedback from the students. Write a project report and attach the list of vocabulary, lesson plans and feedback from the students with your assignments.
