PROJECT SUGGESTIONS FOR LAW AND LANGUAGE


Collect newspaper articles carrying legal maxims or terms. Please elaborate these maxims and terms. Attach the newspaper article along with a proper reference. Collect and Study the legal documents/formats prepared by 'legal shops' for various purposes. What are the shortfalls of the language? Is it comprehensible to the layperson? Is it easy to understand? Make your recommendations about the language. Note any special features of the language that you may come across in law books, statutes, and legal writings. Point out the deficiencies if any and the scope for improvement. Collect courtroom scenes [scenes concerning law] from movies, comment on the mannerisms, Language and etiquettes. Interview some judges, or other legal professionals who articulate their opinion about language of the law, i.e. about the use of' Plain English' Collect references from the literature, what conclusions can you draw about the depiction of the Legal process in literature. Collect samples of gender-biased language from journalistic and legal writings. Conclude about their prevalence and effects. Suggest remedies. Study characteristics of 'short text messages' and conclude whether some regularities characteristic to the sender can be identified.
