Dear Parent,

August 2011

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year! We are your childs math teachers, Erika Myers and Lisa Schuyler. After a fun filled summer with our young children, we are ready to get back into the swing of things at school. We are especially looking forward to working with you and your child during their last year in Center Cass School District. In order to keep you informed about what is going on in math, we have set up a blog and will be updating it weekly. Please check it frequently for an idea of what your child is doing in math class. (We sometimes even post extra credit on it!!) The web address is mrsmyersmath.blogspot.com. In math this year we will be preparing students for algebra in high school. Some of the topics we cover are: integer operations, solving equations, problem solving, geometry, measurement, exponents, ratios, percents, and linear equations. We also spend time reviewing fractions. This year students can access their textbook via the internet. In order to do this, go to classzone.com, click on online book, click on create a student account, and then follow the directions for account set-up. The activation code is 6019938-20. Be sure to write down the username and password you create so that you can log on in the future. We strongly encourage students to use the online book at home to lighten the load going to and from school each day! All students should also have a calculator at home for their use. Students grades in math are composed of the following items. Prep Points: Students are expected to come to class with their textbook, math notebook (with blank paper in it), completed homework, a pencil and a pen. Each student will start the trimester with 20 preparation points. Two points will be deducted each time a student needs to return to their locker for any of the above items. Homework: Homework will be given virtually every night. It is important that students understand that homework is practice of a concept or skill learned in class. Therefore, homework on a new concept will be taken for a completion grade. Review assignments will be taken as a grade based on correctness. It is important that students show all work that has helped them come to an answer. This will also help them explain their reasoning to other students in the class. Homework checks: In order to make sure that students are doing their homework and checking it during class, homework checks may be given periodically. During a homework check, students will be given problems to copy from homework that has already been assigned and checked. If they have corrected their homework in class, and have an organized notebook, they should always be able to get full credit on homework checks. ISAT Practice: ISAT practice will be given periodically throughout the year. Problems will be review of concepts that students should have already mastered. The problems will be in a variety of forms such as multiple choice, short answer, and extended response questions. Quizzes/Tests: We will give three or four quizzes for each chapter. These quizzes may be used to study for a test. Tests will be given at the end of each chapter, usually about every three weeks. Partial credit is given on tests and quizzes based on the work that the student shows.

Projects: Students will occasionally be working on projects related to what we are working on in class. All projects will be graded using a rubric which the students will receive when the project is assigned.
Please review this letter with your child. If you have any questions please feel free to contact both of us. Our email addresses are: emyers@ccsd66.org and lschuyler@ccsd66.org.
