About This Document
We have provided online documentation in lieu of our traditionally printed manual. The benefits of this change are not only that we conserve paper and save on printing costs, but we can make adjustments for future product changes much easier. Above all, we hope this arrangement is convenient for you, the user. We welcome your comments on this. This guide was created in Acrobat's Portable Document Format (PDF) using Adobe Acrobat Exchange 2.0.1. Acrobat Reader enables the user to view and print PDF documents. Adobe Type Manager (ATM) is required for printing. This manual is for Macintosh and Windows platforms, and uses the convention that Windows commands precede Macintosh commands. For example, Ctrl/Command-C equals the Windows Ctrl+C command and the Macintoshs Command-C command. Also, we predominately use Adobes Photoshop application for tutorials or itemized instructions. We have occasionally used the term PC in referring to the Windows platform and/or operating system.

Instructions
Reading this manual on your screen and printing it is very easy. Simply click on a chapter heading or subheading from the list on the left of your screen to learn more about the subject. Use the scroll bar on the right to move forward and backward through the topics pages. Standard methods can be used for printing specific page(s) or the entire document.

What is the Exteriors CD?

Exteriors provides a large collection of seamless surfaces including brick, shingles, wood, concrete, rock, and stucco textures specifically designed with 3D rendering in mind. The images are offered in 1024 x 1024, 512 x 512, and 256 x 256 pixels with Artbeats high-quality standards for maximum usability. Most of the images have corresponding bump maps. Whether you are an architect, a game developer, designer, or just using the product for fun, you will find the materials you need to create your own unique environment.

Whats New?
If you have grown accustomed to working with previous Artbeats collections, please note the following changes for this product. 1. The DOS naming convention has changed somewhat to accommodate this collection of images and textures. Please see the Quick Start chapter for more detailed information. 2. On the Quick Reference Card, we have provided icons that tell whether a bump map is provided or whether the image is square or rectangular . 3. We have provided 1024 x 1024 pixel images and omitted the 128 x 128 pixel images. 4. Mac users will find that the 1024 x 1024 images are provided in TIFF format instead of PICT. These files are shared data on both Macintosh and ISO partitions (this was done due to the limited space on the CD-ROM).

How This Product Came Together

Exteriors was developed using 2.25" x 2.75" photographs taken from various urban and rural locations. The transparencies were drum-scanned, color-corrected and flaws removed. After using a proprietary procedure for making the images seamless, they were re-sized and corrected further before mastering the original CD. Many of the source files are over 2K x 2K in size and individual files are available to registered users of this product for a processing fee.

Can I Use These Images for Print?

The simple answer is yes, however, the size of the files may cause an undesirable pattern when tiled to sizes larger than 6" x 9". Three-D renderings that use these images as surface maps should work well for print, since mapped objects contained therein are smaller than the image as a whole. When going to print, pre-press professionals suggest using a resolution twice that of the line screen. In other words, a line screen of 150 lpi requires a graphic of at least 300 dpi. If one of the 1024 x 1024 tiles is adjusted from 72 dpi to 300 dpi, the resulting image size would be 3.4" x 3.4"which may be too small for your application. You can always bring the image into an image-manipulation program (like Photoshop) and tile it there to see if you like how the pattern lays out on a larger field (please see the instructions for Checking the Pattern of a Seamless Tile on page 8).

Requirements
Hardware
This varies greatly depending on your application. A PC/486 with a hard drive and 8MB of RAM or higher is the minimum suggested to import images. Image manipulation and 3D texture-mapping can require up to 12MB of RAM, 32-bit color and 60MB of hard drive space (for virtual memory). These images are compatible with PowerPCs, Windows, and native-mode applications.

Software
You will need an animation, presentation, 3D-rendering program, or paint program that imports TIFF, PICT, or BMP graphics such as 3D Studio, Strata Studio Pro, Ray Dream Designer or CrystalGraphics TOPAS. For editing, you will need an image-manipulation program, such as Adobe Photoshop, Painter, or Corel PhotoPaint.

Quick Start
If you feel comfortable with importing and manipulating various graphic formats, you may use the images as they are with one exception: Mac users may need to convert the large 1024 x 1024 files from TIFF to PICT before incorporating into a 3D scene (depending on the application). This manual contains helpful information, even for the expert, so we urge you to take a closer look. The images can be accessed directly from the CD-ROM which contains no locked files or retrieval software. For the most part, the folders (or directories and subdirectories) are self-explanatory. We have provided the images in a variety of sizes: 1024 x 1024, 512 x 512, and 256 x 256 pixels and in 24-bit color. We have also included bump maps when applicable. The Quick Reference Card, included in the product packaging, provides a small thumbnail of each image. The naming convention used is in accordance with the image acronym (located directly below each name), size, and color mode. Below is an example of a typical file name.

RIR__512.TIF
The first three places show the name: RIR =River Rock CA3 =Coarsed Ashlar 3, etc. Image type _ =Seamless Tile B =Bump Map

(River Rock, 512 pixels square)

The file extension: TIFF, PICT, BMP

Image size in pixels: 256 =256x256 512 =512x512 1024 =1024x1024

An Explanation of the License Agreement

The license agreement, although broad, does have limits and it is important for you to know them. In order to lessen the confusion that is often present when using copyrighted artwork, the following provides an explanation of the license agreement found on your registration card. You are granted use of these images on one computer at a time. If you have more than one computer in your office and/or are networked to other computers that will need to access these images, we require you to have a separate software package for each CPU or a multi-use license covering all computers. This last option is suggested because it is inexpensive and easy to obtain. Please contact us for further details.

Important Guidelines
It is important to us that you not only enjoy these images for your own projects, but that you can profit by using them. You may use the images for in-house or outside clients, under the following guidelines: 1. When charging clients for work using our images, the image(s) must be used as part of a larger production, as a texture map, or in conjunction with text and graphics. It cannot be charged for by itself. 2. The images may not be resold as art or as enhancements to art products or stationery. 3. The images may be used on products for resale as long as the products value doesnt come from our images. These guidelines apply even if the files have been significantly altered. Game Developers: Seamless Textures Collection may be used as backgrounds or 3D surfaces for electronic or video games without any copyright infringement.

Image Editing
Any paint or image-manipulation program capable of importing bitmapped TIFF images can be used to alter these files. For serious editing, we strongly suggest using a high-end, image-manipulation program like Adobe Photoshop, Painter, or Corel PhotoPaint. Below are just a few of the operations you can perform in most of these applications: Add anti-aliased text or graphics Select certain portions of the image for specific editing Make hue, saturation, brightness, and contrast changes Add various effects using the image filters Crop and/or re-size Convert to other color modes, such as grayscale or CMYK Save the image in other formats Print the image

Using Seamless Tiles

These images were designed specifically for surface mapping. Many rendering programs allow you to import a custom image that can be wrapped around or projected onto any 3D object. The textures can be applied to walls, roofs, floors, furnitureanywhere the texture is desired. Whether placed side-by-side or top-to-bottom, these textures will not show a seam. There are several reasons that a seamless graphic is beneficial: 1. By tiling multiple smaller images versus using one larger one, less memory and rendering time are required. 2. Objects with a continuous surface that allows the texture to seam together on the back side (columns, for example) will appear flawless from any angle. Your application should allow you to control whether the image is used once or repeated many times (tiled). Some programs try to simulate a seamless tile by using a mirror image of the original. Make sure this kind of tiling is disabled. Standard image repetition will do the trick. It is usually called normal tiling. The 1024 x 1024 images are unusually large and may bog down (or slow down) various rendering engines, especially if the RAM available is limited. If your work will only be used for screen display or video, it wont be necessary to use such large files. One exception would be an animation that required you to zoom in on a specific object without loosing surface detail. Please realize that although no seam is visible, the image elements can be seen to repeat. With patterns that are large and dramatic, the repetition is more obvious.

Checking the Pattern of a Seamless Tile

You may wish to check just how seamless our seamless tiles really are. Or you might want to see how a brick tile will look on large wall. But how do you do it without a lot of precision cutting and pasting, or worse yet, waiting for an image to render? The procedure is easy in Photoshop, simply follow the steps described below.
1. Open the desired image. For this example, choose a tile that is 256 x 256 pixels (it will have 256 in the name). 2. Select the entire image (Ctrl/Command-A). 3. Select Define Pattern from the Edit menu.

4. Make a new file (Ctrl/Command-N). It should be larger than the tile, 512 x 512 pixels will do nicely. 5. Select the entire image (Ctrl/Command-A). 6. Choose Fill from the Edit menu. Select Use Pattern.

Bump Maps
Most of the images in this product have a corresponding bump map that can be found in the folder (subdirectory) appropriately named, Bump Maps. A bump map is a gray-scale image that provides 3D surface information to a particular object. If you look closely at any wood or brick surface, you will see that there are shallow dips and bumps within the grain or mortar. Bump maps allow you to duplicate these surface irregularities. Of the gray-scale information, light tones are translated into bumps and dark tones into dips. Highlights, shadows, and even reflections are applied accordingly. As mentioned earlier, the Mac user will find TIFF versions of the 1024 x 1024 images that may need to be converted into PICT before use. Not every 3D rendering program can import bump maps. Please check your users manual.
