Vehicle Tracking System

Synopsis: VEHICLE TRACKING SYSTEM is the technology used to determine the location of a vehicle using different methods like GPS and other radio navigation systems operating through satellites and ground based stations. By following triangulation or trilateration methods the tracking system enables to calculate easy and accurate location of the vehicle. Vehicle information like location details, speed, distance traveled etc. can be viewed on a digital mapping with the help of a software via Internet. Even data can be stored and downloaded to a computer from the GPS unit at a base station and that can later be used for analysis. This system is an important tool for tracking each vehicle at a given period of time and now it is becoming increasingly popular for people having expensive cars and hence as a theft prevention and retrieval device.

What is Vehicle Tracking?

Vehicle Security is a primary concern for all vehicle owners. Owners as well as researchers are always on the look out for new and improved security systems for their vehicles. One has to be thankful for the upcoming technologies, like GPS systems, which enables the owner to closely monitor and track his vehicle in realtime and also check the history of vehicle's movements. This new technology, popularly called vehicle Tracking Systems has done wonders in maintaining the security of the vehicle.

Vehicle Tracking System is one of the biggest technological advancements to track the activities of the vehicle. The security system uses Global Positioning System GPS, to find the location of the monitored or tracked vehicle and then uses satellite or radio systems to send to send the coordinates and the location data to the monitoring center. At monitoring center various softwares are used to plot the Vehicle on a map. In this way the Vehicle owners are able to track their vehicle on a real-time basis. Due to real-time tracking facility, vehicle tracking systems are becoming increasingly popular among owners of expensive vehicles.

The vehicle tracking hardware is fitted on to the vehicle. It is fitted in such a manner that it is not visible to anyone who is outside the vehicle. Thus it operates as a covert unit which continuously sends the location data to the monitoring unit. When the vehicle is stolen, the location data sent by tracking unit can be used to find the location and coordinates can be sent to police for further action. Some Vehicle tracking System can even detect unauthorized movements of the vehicle and then alert the owner. This gives an edge over other pieces of technology for the same purpose

Monitoring center Software helps the vehicle owner with a view of the location at which the vehicle stands. Browsing is easy and the owners can make use of any browser and connect to the monitoring center software, to find and track his vehicle. This in turn saves a lot of effort to find the vehicle's position by replacing the manual call to the driver. As we have seen the vehicle tracking system is an exciting piece of technology for vehicle security. It enables the owner to virtually keep an eye on his vehicle any time and from anywhere in the world.

Vehicle Tracking Systems - Overview

Introduction Vehicle tracking systems are devices used for tracking location of vehicles in real time. This is made possible by installing electronic devices in the vehicle; it is the signals sent out by the devices that enable owners or other parties entrusted with the tracking job to trace and follow the vehicle. It was the shipping industry that first started using vehicle tracking systems. When large fleet of vehicles were spread out over the vast expanses of ocean, the owner corporations often found it difficult to keep track of what was happening. As the saying goes necessity is the mother of invention; thus GPS tracking systems which originally were used in military operations found their application here. The commercial application grew poular very soon and these days consumer vehicles of all sorts use tracking systems as devices to prevent theft and enhance retrieval.

The Technology GPS (Global Positioning System) is the technology most commonly used for vehicle tracking these days. There are also other variants of AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) that enable easy location of vehicles. The GPS modules with their satellite linked positioning technique make easy and accurate location of the vehicle possible. The information can be viewed on electronic maps that are connected to the Internet or otherwise supported by specialized software. Advanced GPS modules may also have cellular or satellite transmitters that communicate with remote users apart from the central station from where the tracking is done. As we saw earlier, the GPS system uses satellite signals. These systems were originally developed by the government for defense purposes. The satellite part is thus available to civilians and commercial users free of cost. All the user needs to do is install the appropriate devices for sending out and receiving signals. This makes GPS an inexpensive technology. The other AVL systems like Loran and LoJack are terrestrial based and use radio frequency (RF) transmitters. RF transmitters send out powerful signals that can pass through walls, garages and other indoor barriers. Terrestrial or otherwise, most of these do not need antenna to be in direct line of sight with the satellite. This is a major advantage of the technologys progress. Active and Passive Tracking In the case of passive tracking, the device simply stores information of the vehicle like GPS location, speed, change in direction and events. This information is downloaded onto a computer for study purposes when the vehicle

gets back to its original destination. In the case of active tracking, the device not only collects the information mentioned above, but it also transmits the information in real time through satellite or cellular networks. Uses of Vehicle Tracking Commercial fleet operators are by far the largest users of vehicle tracking systems. These systems are used for operational functions such as routing, security, dispatch and collecting on-board information. These systems are also used in consumer vehicles as devices for preventing theft and retrieving stolen/lost vehicles. The signal sent out by the installed device help the police to track the vehicle. These tracking systems can be used as an alternative for traditional car alams or in combination with it. Installing tracking systems can thus bring down the insurance costs for your vehicle by reducing the risk factor. Vehicle Tracking systems often have several alternatives, like sending automatic alerts to a phone or email if the vehicle is moved withoug due authorization. They can also work as one layer of several combined security measures. Apart from security concerns, the tracking systems can also help users such as taxi services to improve their customer service. The systems enable the operators to identify the empty taxis and direct the nearest one to pick up the customer. Vehicle tracking systems can also be applied for monitoring driving behavior for both commercial and individual situations. Parents for instance can use tracking devices to keep an eye on their teenage sons driving.

Markets for Vehicle Tracking Systems Based on the uses described above, we can categorize the users of vehicle tracking systems into the following segments. Tracking and Recovery of Stolen Vehicles: GPS, or better still RF, can help to trace and recover stolen vehicles. LoJack devices can even be activated remotely by the police

Automatic vehicle location (AVL)

Introduction: AVL enables one to locate any vehicle through internet in seconds and minutes and protect ones remotely placed asset or in other words can say that it enables operators to monitor their vehicles. Automatic vehicle location is also called Telelocation and is an important tool which identifies a vehicle with regard to its geographic position. This sends the information related to this to the station. Most commonly used technology in this process is GPS. All the information is transmitted from the vehicle with the help of satellites, radio stations or any other cellular network to the end user. AVL is not a single device but a combination of various technologies and techniques. To serve this purpose it makes use of different technologies such as dead reckoning, inertial navigation, or RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) readers, street mapping, cellular communications. Other technologies for

example GSM and EVDO (Evolution Data Optimised) are more popular with AVL as these reduce the cost and also because low data rate is required for AVL. Any vehicles fleet whether service vehicles, emergency vehicles or public vehicles can be managed efficiently. This technology also helps to track mobile assets. This will increase the security of such machinery, which can not be taken from one place to other easily. Different systems: There are different systems used for this, for example direction finding, signposts system, global positioning system. The direction finding simply calculates the bearing from two fixed sites to the mobile. This creates a triangle with endpoints at the two fixed points and the mobile. The signpost system is used on fixed routes and rail lines which need to be tracked regularly. GPS technology does not work where terrestrial hurdles come across and signals are not relayed. GPS is most popular not only due to lower cost but also easy to use as the whole system is not required to be placed on the vehicle. The only instruments used are a receiver in the vehicle and a radio to send the stored data. Its resistance to sounds produced by the electronic machines is another reason which makes it more reliable. Components of AVL system: System normally contains various instruments as follows: 1. Mobile radio receiver, 2. GPS receiver,

3. GPS modem, 4. Antenna 5. GPS base station 6. Wireless communication (two way radio or cellular phone) 7. GPS tracking software 8. Data stream processing servers GPS software is a combination of road mapping and GPS tracking functions Benefits:

Another important benefit is the operational efficiency of the fleet. This also provides improved and safe departures and arrivals of the fleet. System improves customer service consequently increases customer satisfaction.

This also gives a chance of exact service performance of the agencies and better planning for future.

System helps to keep a watch on the time schedule of the vehicles and punctuate the whole system

One can have information about the whereabouts of the passengers boarded on the vehicle.

Ultimately a better management and utilization of the fleet at a lower cost and reduced labour, fuel.

With the knowledge of whereabouts of the vehicles, it could be redirected to provide timely delivery. This fact can prove very useful for companies as

they can develop a delivery road-map by analysing database of vehicle information

AVL increases accountability of the on field man, thus increases the performance of the company.

Vehicle Tracking System - Features

Introduction Monitoring and managing the mobile assets are very important for any company dealing with the services, delivery or transport vehicles. Information technologies helps in supporting these functionalities from remote locations and update the managers with the latest information of their mobile assets. Tracking the mobile assets locations data and analyzing the information is necessary for optimal utilization of the assets. Vehicle Tracking System is a software & hardware system enabling the vehicle owner to track the position of their vehicle. A vehicle tracking system uses either GPS or radio technology to automatically track and record a fleet's field activities. Activity is recorded by modules attached to each vehicle. And then the data is transmitted to a central, internet-connected computer where it is stored. Once the data is transmitted to the computer, it can can be analyzed and reports can be downloaded in real-time to your computer using either web browser based tools or customized software.

Vehicle Tracking Benefits. An enterprise-level vehicle tracking system should offer customizable reporting tools, for example to provide a summary of the any day activities. It should have the ability to produce and print detailed maps and reports displaying actual stops, customer locations, mileage traveled, and elapsed time at each location, and real-time access to vehicle tracking data and reports.

Vehicle tracking system can be active, passive or both depending upon the application. Here are steps involved in the vehicle tracking:
y

Data capture: Data capturing is the first step in tacking your vehicle. Data in a vehicle tracking system is captured through a unit called automated vehicle unit. The automated vehicle unit uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the location of the vehicle. This unit is installed in the vehicle and contains interfaces to various data sources. This paper considers the location data capture along with data from various sensors like fuel, vehicle diagnostic sensors etc.

Data storage: Captured data is stored in the me memory of the automated vehicle unit.

Data transfer: Stored data are transferred to the computer server using the mobile network or by connecting the vehicle mount unit to the computer.

Data analysis: Data analysis is done through software application. A GIS mapping component is also a integral part of the vehicle tracking system and it is used to display the correct location of the vehicle on the map.

Automatic Vehicle Location Advantage

Introduction Most people are new to the concept of being able to track vehicles, people and pets using mechanical devices. Some people are bound to take it all with a pinch of salt, perhaps as a spin off of the gizmos used in Hollywood action flicks. Some others are likely to view these devices as an intrusion into their lives and equate the device with loss of freedom. However these devices are a godsend to million-

dollar businesses at the management level and parents concerned about the safety of their children. Consider this- you simply log onto a website and are able to visually keep track of a person or thing equipped with a very small device. AVL-What is It? Automatic Vehicle Location or AVL is a system primarily used in tracking vehicles, freight systems and automobiles. It uses computer technology. The tracking device attached to the vehicle sends out signals and thus passes on information about its real-time position to a control system. There are several techniques for determining the position and transmitting it, and the requirements determine which technique is actually used. As a general rule, the device stores the position information for a specific period, which could be anything from a few seconds to some minutes. The device may send out the information in the raw form (electronic signals) or as processed information. AVL systems are often used by transit agencies in combination with computeraided dispatch, mobile data terminals and emergency alarms. These agencies also use AVL for improving passenger services, for uses such as real-time passenger information, automatic passenger counters and automated fare payment systems. AVL systems can also come into use for purposes like automatic stop announcements, automated destination signs, monitoring vehicle components and prioritizing traffic signals. Here is a representative diagram that shows how GPS based AVL systems work.

AVL -Advantages Transit agencies use AVL to enhance optimum utilization of fleet and reduce fuel consumption, labor and capital costs. AVL helps to improve adherence to schedule and access passenger information. With AVL, more data is available and this makes it easier to manage transit systems. The net efficiency and productivity of the systems thus increases. Studies indicate that apart from increasing operational efficiency, AVL systems also enhance customer service due to the ability to predict bus arrival timings in real time. Increased customer service and satisfaction are thus the greatest benefit of AVL. Supplementary technologies like automatic passenger counters also enable to analyze service performance in real time as well as chronologically, enabling system planning and emergency repairs. A study conducted in 2003 has shown direct link between AVL and increased ridership and revenues. Here are some of the advantages of AVL point-wise.

Productivity enhanced- more trips, capital savings due to the ability to better utilize vehicles, maintenance costs reduced and thus general reduction of cost per vehicle

Better adherence to schedule, accuracy in monitoring and coordination More number of users and higher user loyalty Reduced need for supervisors and manual data entry Improved ability to control operations and driver performance Effective tracking of off-route vehicles Communications between drivers, supervisors, operators and other staff improves

Lesser number of lost radio messages Capabilities to inform passengers of bus arrival times improve the quality of service and help the travelers to take better decisions

Reduces complaints from customers and need for customer information personnel

Improves overall image of the transit agency through these steps The data is more accurate and complete and thus the agency is able to schedule and plan better

Can reduce preparation time for schedule as well as number of staff required

Better bus stop placement Better security for driver as well as travelers by enabling faster location of vehicles and response to accidents

Better operational decisions towards detours due to sudden developments like bad weather, roadway closings and accidents

What are the Costs? The costs of AVL include procurement, installation and the software for the onboard device and the control center. There are also labor costs concerning maintenance and new staff to operate the systems. AVL systems are available at different prices, the price dependent on the size, number of components and the sophistication of the system. The AVL systems are available in a wide range of models. There are models with simple, basic features like GPS/ DGPS AVL that have computerized dispatching, mobile data terminals and silent alarms. On the other end of the spectrum are models with highly sophisticated features. These systems work out cheaper for large fleet that needs similar features, as the cost of the central monitoring system is distributed over a larger number of vehicles.

Vehicle Tracking in India

VEHICLE TRACKING SYSTEM or Automatic Vehicle Location System (AVL)is now one of the most popular technological changes in all over the world that is going to make our personal and business life lot easier. As the term suggests, it

enables one to track or monitor the location of vehicle in instant time. Primarily, the system functions with the help of different technologies like the Global Positioning System (GPS), traditional cellular network such as Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and other radio frequency medium. But GPS is more effective and accurate in this field. As far as vehicle tracking in India is concerned, its uses and market are expected to increase within a couple of years. Vehicle tracking system in India is mainly used in transport industry that keeps a real-time track of all vehicles in the fleet. The tracking system consists of GPS device that brings together GPS and GSM technology using tracking software. The attached GPS unit in the vehicle sends periodic updates of its location to the route station through the server of the cellular network that can be displayed on a digital map. The location details are later transferred to users via SMS, e-mail or other form of data transfers. There are various GPS software and hardware developing companies in India working for tracking solutions. However, its application is not that much of popular as in other countries like USA, which regulates the whole GPS network. In India it is mostly used in Indian transport and logistics industry and not much personal vehicle tracking. But with better awareness and promotion the market will increase. Lets have a look at its current application in India using vehicle tracking though in less volume. Freight forwarding

Logistic service providers are now increasingly adopting vehicle-tracking system for better fleet management and timely service. The system can continuously

monitor shipment location and so can direct the drivers directly in case of any change of plan. Fleet managers can keep an eye on all activities of workers, vehicle over speed, route deviation etc. The driver in turn can access emergency service incase of sickness, accident or vehicle breakdown. All in turn supports money and time management, resulting better customer service. Call centers

In commercial vehicle segments the taxi operators of various call centers are now using vehicle-tracking system for better information access.

However, its application is in its infant stage in India and if adequate steps are taken in bringing the cost of hardware and software low then it can be used for tracking personal vehicle, farming (tractor), tourist buses, security and emergency vehicle etc. Again Government needs to cut down the restriction imposed upon the availability of digital maps for commercial use and this will encourage software industry in developing cost-effective tracking solutions. Though, sales of both commercial and passenger vehicles are growing but price of tracking service is very high and this is the key issue in Indian market. Hence, its important for market participants to reduce prices of GPS chips and other products in order to attract more and more users. As far as Indian vehicle tracking and navigation market is concerned the recent association of India with Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) will act as a catalyst in the improvement of vehicle tracking system. This will give an advantage in managing traffic, roadways and ports and also as an important tool for police and security agency to track stolen vehicles. Hence, in near future

there is large prospect for the utility of vehicle tracking system in India, which can revolutionize the way we are communicating.

GIS in Tracking System

This article discuses the importance of GISin the Vehicle tracking System (GIS Tracking System). Introduction to GIS GIS is a combination of different instruments, which are used to store, modify, and display spatial data after collection. It mainly represents earths geographic features and analyses the data given by geographic or spatial coordinates. What makes it superior to other information systems is its combination of common database operations with unique visualization and geographic analysis. By this integration it becomes more useful for various fields and will help in explaining event, prediction of outcomes and planning strategies. GIS not only collects data but also displays and analyses the same connected to relational database. This connection gives GIS an edge over other information systems. From the database maps can be drawn or vice versa, that is data can be referenced from the maps and when a database is updated the map automatically changes accordingly There are various uses of this technology. For example this can be utilized for scientific investigation, management of resources, asset, in the field of

environment, road planning cartography, etc. In case of natural disaster this technology is very valuable for assessing the exact time of emergency response. History of GIS Worlds first operational GIS developed in 1964 in Ottawa, Ontario by the federal Department of Energy, Mines, and Resources. It was developed to know the lands capability by collecting data about soils, agriculture, recreation, wildlife, forestry, and land use. Various ways can be used to represent data, today digital information is used but most common is digitization. In this method a survey plan or a hard copy map is converted to digital form through the use of a drafting with the help of computer There are several ways to understand GIS. One is called database view. In this GIS is based on a database structure by which world is described in geographic terms. In this method certain features of earth are represented with the help of symbols. For example streets are symbolized as centerlines, wells as points etc. Another method is geo-visualization that is mapping. This represents a combination of maps, which visualizes not only features but also a relation between different features Third and the last method is the model view in which a set of tools take the data from already existing datasets and modify them and present those data in a new form. Various applications of GIS based tracking are:

Car Theft Preventions using Vehicle Tracking System

CAR THEFT: INTRODUCTION

As India is emerging as an economic power country, many people are now being able to afford cars. This shows the power of the country but like double-edged sward this development in other hand, has given rise to a most jeopardizing crime that is cars theft. There has been a gradual increasing in the incidence of cars lifting. These stolen cars are than again sold out by changing their chassis number in another city or neighboring countries. Thieves also find it profitable to sell expensive equipment and accessories of the car such as batteries, stereos and other decorative tools of the cars. Ministers also confessed that, car-lifting cases have shown an increasing trend, but there is a declining trend in tracing of these vehicles. Without any method of tracking the cars, only 10 percent of the

total stolen vehicles are recovered.

CAR THEFT DATA IN INDIA

According to official sources of Ministry of State for Home Affairs, the rate of car hacking is increasing year by year. In the year 2003, the total 68,945 cases of car theft were registered, while it becomes 80,750 cases in 2004. In 2005 and 2006, total number of cases came in the limelight were 84,150 and 83,375 respectively, in which the exact figure of total cases of the year is still awaiting, because the above figure of the data is till Sep 2006. That's why the government is extremely worried about the vehicle theft crime and appeals to the owners to utilize the advance techniques of the GPS and others related techniques available in the market to reduce the car theft cases. These cases harms the country and the society worth millions and millions dollars.

According to NCRB (National Crime Record Bureau) the total hacking of vehicles are valued in Indian currency in worth Rs.3.94 billions in 2003, Rs.4.39 billions in 2004 and 4.66 billion in 2005 respectively. The exact data of 2006 is yet to exist. In the stolen cases, very few recovery can be held due to lack of technology used by the car owners. Many times vehicles were found in the different forms or in the damaged forms. Only 32.8 percent vehicles were recovered in 2003, whereas it was only 30.5 percent in 2004. In 2005, it further dipped and only 29.3 percent of total recovery could be done. Maharastra was on the top position followed by Delhi and Gujrat in the vehicle lifting crime in 2005. The total number of cases registered in Maharastra, Delhi and Gujrat were 12,180, 8,862, and 7,096 respectively.

TECHNIQUES TO BE USED

In the market, there are basically different types of security systems available such as centralized locking system, in which the car is locked or unlocked by its remote controlling system. This is the most commonly used security system. A special types of sensors applied in this device that begins beeping loudly if someone tries to open it forcefully and the main unit is hidden somewhere inside the car, which a thief can not find or deactivate it easily. Another technique is Gear lock in which the system locks the Gear of the car, so that if the thief manage to get into the car can not drive it away. Steering lock is also available there are in the form of other security systems. Besides these clutch lock, brake lock also works in preventing to steal the car as these locks the clutch and brake respectively of the car.

As the technology is advancing, more and more security systems are flourishing the market. Now by the use of satellite or mobile phone it is easy to track the mobile vehicles. This device is known as GPS Tracking service.

WHAT IS GPS TRACKING DEVICE?

GPS is a compact handy device like mobile phone with enabled combo technology of GPS and GPRS that track mobile vehicles through using four visible satellites. The satellites send the signals to the GPS receiver and it calculates the signals and inform about the exact position of the vehicle on the earth. The calculated data send on web server provided to users by the GPS service providing company. The company provides a web based login account to access the data from the web server. Using this account, the user can track one

or more vehicles at a time. The GPS device provides the complete data about your vehicle like its status, maximum speed, motion hours, distance covered and stationary timing and duration.

MICRO VEHICLE BLACK BOX

Micro vehicle black box is a next generation anti-theft security system. This is a new concept, which is in a testing phase to track the stolen car through cell phones. It is compatible with all GSM or CDMA mobiles. With the help of this service, it will be easy to make the car immobilize, also this service will help to know about the unauthorized entry in the car, and location of the vehicle. Through this service it will be easy to make two-way communication with the driver and transfer of command.

HOW CAR THEFT CAN BE PREVENTED

To prevent the car theft, we all should be very careful about not leaving the car doors unlocked or windows partially open. Use of any security system is must to stop the crime, like centralized lock, steering lock, clutch lock or brake lock etc.

Parking should be done in authorized parking facility. In the night, car should be parked in best-lit areas for prevention. Valuable things are not to be kept in the car.

If it is possible than try to take away the stereo with you, while parking the car for longer time.

Vehicle Tracking and Recovery System

Introduction Vehicle tracking originated from the shipping industry, where the need for managing fleets is the top priority. The tracking system makes it easy in locating ships or vehicle easily on real time basis. It provides power to individual or operator to have full control over its moving asset. It is also used as a defense mechanism which protects the vehicles such as construction equipments, trucks, trailers etc. from theft. This is done with the help of some electronic equipment attached to the vehicles so that the location of the missing vehicle can be identified as early as possible. Devices used to locate and recover:
y

Various systems are used to locate the stolen vehicle Mostly GPS, the Global Positioning System, is used to find out the exact geographic position of the vehicle.

Another device is satellite transmitters, which transmits signal to a remote user about the location of the vehicle.

Loran and Lojack units locate the vehicle by radio frequency that can penetrate through stone-built structures such as walls, buildings and garages.

Mainly two types of tracking are described: Active tracking and Passive tracking.

Active tracking works on real time basis that is after collecting information about location, speed, and destination, the device sends it to data centre. Radio frequency is active technology.

Passive tracking works as long as vehicle is on destination. It stores GPS data that can be later downloaded to the computer. Here different tracking software is available for storing and downloading data.

Benefits: This technology is best used by fleet operators for better management. Everything routing, dispatch, onboard information, security is managed efficiently. Driving behaviour can also be known by this device. Technology holds good for consumers vehicles also. Device also makes the task of police to recover the stolen vehicles easily. It also works as alert system and raise an alarm when vehicle is removed from the place without authority. Information regarding its location, status and daily reports can be taken on real time basis from the vehicle itself. Field of uses: Technology can be used for different purposes including service management, fleet management, stolen vehicle recovery, field sales and trailer tracking.

Practical uses of the GPS

GPS emerged as a great help in the field of navigation all over the world. It was first developed by US for military purposes but later it proved very useful instrument for map-making, telecommunications and also for other commercial purposes. It helps in the navigation not only on the land but in air and water too. GPS is widely used in vehicle tracking systems that provide all the information regarding the speed of the vehicle, location of the vehicle. All these save the time and resources of the individual and help reach its destination with time and energy less spent. As the commercial vehicles are concerned it helps in better management and results in increased efficiency of the fleet. GPS units are well used in the navigation of the rivers, seas, oceans as there is no other device to penetrate a river or an ocean with endless bottom. One can load the maps in GPS and find out one?s own location in the map to find out how close or far one is from its destination. Tracking unit of the GPS is very useful for the commercial companies for the management of the fleet of the vehicles. With the help of tracking system we can trace any individual or a vehicle. From the central database station we can find out the location. This device is best utilized by the commercial trucking companies to monitor company fleet vehicle locations. This increases the efficiency, accuracy and convenience of transportation industries as well as chain supply management by optimum utilization of resources by tracking

the location of the vehicle and accordingly redirecting the vehicle to the shortest route reducing cost of fuel. GPS for better fleet management

GPS technology was developed by US for military purposes to help navigation in air, water as well as on land. Later it became indispensable in commercial areas. A group of satellites are used to send the received data back to receivers on the surface of the earth.

For tracing the time lag between the time code signal sent and the time it was actually received on earth GPS makes use of theory of relativity propounded by Einstein and four signals to provide accuracy. Once the technology was confined to military domain, today it became a $15 billion industry. Mostly GPS is being used by the public transportation agencies as they generally have to deal with larger area. For example school buses in cities to keep the track of the buses to make safety of the passengers sure. GPS gives drivers information about the other vehicle so that on the basis of information received may align its own course avoiding traffic congestion. Thus keeping passengers safe and also saving time. This also gives parents peace of mind as they find that vehicle carrying their children are regularly being monitored or kept watch. In India, a fleet of one fifty GPS enabled metered taxis were launched in Mumbai. This enhanced fleet provided better customer services as they now were able to book a taxi in advance just by few strokes on internet or phone and call taxi at a preferred location. This added one more to the list of benefits to the customer that now customer will be charged appropriately as all the data regarding mileage will be sent back to the control centre. This also ensures the safety of the passenger as there are reduced chances of kidnapping or harming the passenger by virtue of monitoring of the vehicle. In companies device is used to track especially supply trucks and trucks used by the contractors going to job sites. This permits real time tracking of the mobile asset. This also abridges the gap between the actual mileage and the bill paid for it. Transparency naturally comes in the system.

Thus tracking of vehicles reduces the cost of labour, fuel and culminates into the efficient service delivery system.

Benefits of using GPS tracking system

In view of the wide prevalence of Global Positioning System it has become necessary to know how it is handled. Following tips introduce some important parts of the system knowledge of which render it easy to use. First main thing is the panic button used in times of emergency. This comprises of everything ranging from a fender bender to a carjacking. This button when pressed the operator at GPS centre can sense the happening. They can contact you or have communication with you to provide assistance if needed. In crowded parking area when one loses sight of ones car, system comes to your rescue to locate your car and thus avoid unnecessary toil on your part. In case one by mistake locks the car, information about the same can be communicated to the centre and they unlock within minutes. Important advantage comes when car goes out of order in a solitary place having no service point you need not worry. Just a push on the button brings one out of the problem. This very important medium button is labelled as communication button. Such device is a great help to those parents who remain worried about their children while on drive. They can access the information of whereabouts of their child at will.

Vehicle tracking proves a mile stone in cases of theft. This provides a safety net to the vehicle as even if it is taken away by thief you can always find it out. So there are many positive outcomes in the use of GPS but it also becomes important to look into your requirements, options available in the market and then move to a service provider with a reasonable service fee.

Positive and negative aspects of Vehicle Tracking

When some technology comes to be used at practical level it happens to cherish both plus as well as minus points of its own. But sometimes technology may be positive in itself but its application can be misused. Before we go ahead to give space to any technology in our house or work place we should have preestimates of its fall outs. The positive aspects of the tracking system can be summarized as follows: 1. Core benefit of tracking vehicle is that one can monitor ones vehicle from a distance whether on individual or commercial level. It helps busy parents to keep a watch on the children even from their office and control their roaming here and there. Thus can put a check on their rash driving. This gives immense relief to business owners as it gives them information about the misuse of company vehicle or delay in delivering services or drivers violation of speed code, if any. All this keeps a check on wastage of fuel, time and ensures the better services. With the use of this technology one need not enquire the location of the vehicle by phone again and again.

One can get all the required details just by a click on the internet. Map on the screen displays the position of vehicle at a particular time. 2. In view of long journeys and night journeys by car the technology can provide a safety network to the person in condition of emergency. It can cut time of journey short by providing the information regarding location, speed, distance from the destination leading to best route planning. 3. Best feature of the technology is that it is easy to use. just an automated unit is needed to be installed in the vehicle and connected to the centre which may be provided by some company. This instrument is monitored by the GPS tracking company which keeps all the records or its customers locations. All details of location etc are communicated to the user by cell phone or internet connection. Negative points: No technology is free from dark areas. This technology helps monitoring vehicles and children as well and ensures increased productivity at commercial level and safety at personal level. But at the same time it encroaches the privacy of the individual. The liberty of the person gets restricted. This may lead to business owner to measure the performance of the employee by these stats only and there leaves no room for human analysis. Thus technology carries its whites and blues. It depends on the user how to make it useful without violating anybodys rights.

Cell phone GPS tracking

Communication technology has made a long jump from just being an instrument of access to others. It developed to more than a mode of conversation and communication between two people. Cell phone GPS tracking is its glaring example. GPS tracks the location of a cell by interpreting the data received from satellite. Cell phones have been equipped with the facility of broadcast of a radio signal even at the time not connected to other mobiles. Earlier too cell companies used to know the location of cell but not through GPS but by using triangulation information received from the towers. What GPS does is that it renders accuracy and confirmation to this location information Apart from individual use cell phone GPS is also used by the fleet managers who constantly need to track their vehicles. With the help of this device emergency services can be provided in appropriate time and location without loosing time to the disadvantage of the sufferer or needy. Police is equally benefited by the device as it helps to locate the kidnappers in case of kidnapping, thieves. Police is enabled to take quick action against problem creating elements whenever called for help. Thus cell phones with navigational device become your guide in unknown place or when you lose way on unfamiliar road.

Changes in vehicle tracking technology

Vehicle tracking technology has come a long way from its indigenous form of two radios station to efficient GPS and computer tracing. Now-a-days the device is accessible not only to small fleet operators but also to individuals apart from big fleet companies. Early technology: In the initial period of tracking only two radios were used to exchange the information. One radio was attached to the vehicle while another at base station by which drivers were enabled to talk to their masters. Fleet operator could identify the progress through their routes. The technology was not without its limits. It was restricted by the distance which became a hurdle in accuracy and better connectivity between driver and fleet operators. Base station was dependent on the driver for the information and a huge size fleet could not have been managed depending on man-power only. The scene of vehicle tracking underwent a change with the arrival of GPS technology. This reduced the dependence on man-power. Most of the work of tracking became electronic. Computers proved a great help in managing a large fleet of vehicle. This also made the information authentic. As this technology was available at affordable cost all whether small or big fleet could take benefit of this technology Because of the cheap accessibility of the device computer tracking facilities has come to stay and associated with enhanced management. Today each vehicle carries tracking unit which is monitored from the base station. Base station receives the data from the unit.

All these facilities require a heavy investment of capital for the installation of the infrastructure of tracking system for monitoring and dispatching New development in technology: New system costs less with increased efficiency. Presently it is small tracking unit in the vehicle with web-based interface, connected through a mobile phone. This device avoids unnecessary investment in infrastructure with the facility of monitoring from anywhere for the fleet managers. This provides more efficient route plan to fleet operators of all sizes and compositions saving money and time. Future of vehicle tracking: Vehicle tracking system heralded a new era of convenience and affordability in fleet management. Thus due to its easy availability it is going to stay for long.

System: The system consists of modern hardware and software components enabling one to track their vehicle online or offline. Any vehicle tracking system consists of mainly three parts mobile vehicle unit, fixed based station and, database and software system.
y

Vehicle Unit: It is the hardware component attached to the vehicle having either a GPS/GSM modem. The unit is configured around a primary modem that functions with the tracking software by receiving signals from GPS satellites or radio station points with the help of antenna. The

controller modem converts the data and sends the vehicle location data to the server.
y

Fixed Based Station: Consists of a wireless network to receive and forward the data to the data center. Base stations are equipped with tracking software and geographic map useful for determining the vehicle location. Maps of every city and landmarks are available in the based station that has an in-built Web Server.

Database and Software: The position information or the coordinates of each visiting points are stored in a database, which later can be viewed in a display screen using digital maps. However, the users have to connect themselves to the web server with the respective vehicle ID stored in the database and only then s/he can view the location of vehicle traveled.

Summation: No doubt, Vehicle tracking system whether it is GPS based or any other wireless medium has brought one of the most important technological advances in todays communication field. Now one doesnt have to leave a place to know where a particular vehicle is at a given period of time. The automatic vehicle locating system only with the help of a tinny electronic device and tracking software can detect the real-time location of a vehicle by using the conventional cell phone network and Internet. Vehicle tracking originated from the shipping industry, where the need for managing fleets is the top priority.

GPS in everyday use

GPS, though originally developed for military purposes happen to be indispensable in daily life today. When we name GPS the pictures of satellite, vehicles tracking and navigation systems flash in mind at once. But today there have been multiple uses of technology apart from vehicle-tracking and map navigation for all practical purposes in daily routine life. Example of practical uses of the technology follow as below: 1. Pocket-sized GPS tracker device ( sometimes in the form of temper-proof bracelet) is provided by several companies which keeps informing you about the location of your child as well as of your elderlies. 2. We can set a road plan with marked points of interests to save time and energy as well and can lead to optimum utilization of the resources. 3. In case of any emergency or accident one can call for help at the exact location without loss of time.

4. A personal map of travelling spots of your own choice can be prepared with the details of travelling time and route plan. 5. You can reach any destination in shortest time by using shortest route with the help of GPS. 6. In case of loss of luggage while travelling GPS helps finding it before it is damaged or gets out of sight. 7. Again it can keep track of family members in a crowded place such as fair or some meeting. 8. Even while being separated from group on a tourist place you can easily find them by GPS device Apart from the above mentioned there are many other purposes in which global positioning system (GPS) is being used. Though GPS signal system gets obstructed by stone structures still it has become a part of life. The technology is being updated to avoid such limitations. Educational aspect of the technology makes it popular among people. With the help of the technology a location-based cell phone game has been introduced.

Mainly two types of tracking are described: Active tracking and Passive tracking.
y

Field of uses:

GPS tracking is mainly a technology to locate a particular object or person while on operation or on rest. A GPS unit is fitted in the vehicle which receives the data and sends it back to the base station. There are various technologies used even to trap the data for ex. Real-time GPS tracking based on terrestrial cellular network which costs the cheapest. Another is passive GPS tracking in which the data is downloaded when vehicle comes to

rest. The last is satellite based tracking in which signals are sent through satellites to pinpoint the object to be tracked. The reason for the reduced cost was world wide use of mobile phones whose network towers were used by the tracking systems instead of investing in satellites in orbit to create the network to transmit data. All these features made this popular and affordable at low cost for small fleet owners. Such sophisticated technology available at low cost creates good options for businessman to enhance his services for example a logistics company, or courier one. They can locate their vehicle in the fleet at any point of time and coordinate accordingly to its destination thus resulting in optimum utilization of the resources with efficiency it enables the fleet operators to protect their vehicles from remote places. Advanced technology is attracting more businesses due to the supply of efficient tracking devices. As the enhanced technology enters the domain, companies makes its use to better their manufacturing techniques which in turn reduces their input cost of the product giving even consumer a relief. Cheap availability with full efficiency makes it more usable and handy. GPS proves a great help for the lost stock or lost control of the fleet movement. It helps in monitoring and keeping a vigil on mobile assets. Unique feature that gives GPS an edge over other tracking systems is the precision and accuracy with which it delivers the services.

In case of import or export of the products this technology can assure of the security and the information about the delivery at the right places. This also provides the shield of protection to the supply whether domestic or international.
