Your Partner for Growth

Introduction
In the current telecommunications market, where infrastructure is costly, many customers prefer to lease services from Carrier of Carriers (CoCs) rather than build their own networks. The demand for such services has increased rapidly over the last few years. CoC wholesale operators serve a wide variety of customers, whose demands far exceed simple, rigid, point-to-point services: they require multiple services, bitrates, and protocols over a single transparent transmission-leased pipe. In addition, major customers seeking higher quality services are shifting from monitored leased lines, which cannot be managed directly, to fully managed Customer Network Management (CNM) systems. Since CoCs serve multiple operators requiring different services, they must provide several leasing options. Cellular providers, for example, typically lease TDM/SDH/SONET and Ethernet links for traffic backhauling, and SDH/SONET or Ethernet links for connectivity between the MSCs. ISPs mainly lease Ethernet and SDH/SONET links to connect between the routers in the ISP PoPs, while interexchange carriers (IXCs) typically lease SDH/SONET, Ethernet, and wavelength links to connect between their central offices.

Next Generation Network Needs

CoC networks have developed gradually over the years, from supporting PDH services to SDH/SONET, Ethernet, and WDM links. Many CoC networks are currently evolving to provide more efficient support for Ethernet services and Reconfigure Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) functionality. When selecting, upgrading, or developing a network, CoC operators require equipment that guarantees smooth migration to next generation networks; equipment that provides: Flexibility to support different types of traffic, transmitted from any-to-any location Agility to enable fast provisioning of new services in a competitive environment Scalability to support the increased bandwidth needs of all applications Reliability to meet the carrier-class performance demanded by end customers Network visibility of each customer's individual network section

ECI's Optical Solution Meeting CoC Needs

ECI's 1Net framework, our integrated, holistic networking approach, specifically addresses the needs of CoCs and offers a product portfolio with one of the most comprehensive multiservice transport solutions available in the market today. By integrating TDM cross connect, Ethernet/MPLS switching and WDM capabilities in a single carrier-class platform, and by supporting multiple cages and different capacities, the XDM product line provides a level of flexibility that is unique. XDM also supports all leasing options required by CoCs, including PDH connectivity, SDH/SONET, Ethernet, and wavelength services. This flexibility provides CoCs with a wide variety of options to meet their individual and very specific needs.

Ethernet and SDH/SONET Connectivity

While SDH/SONET is currently the most commonly leased line link, the demand for Ethernet services is increasing rapidly. XDM easily meets these demands by simply adding the right plug-in card. XDM is one of the most flexible systems available, supporting SDH/SONET services with connectivity from a low rate signal up to full STM-64/OC-256. XDM also supports Ethernet/MPLS services, including L1 and L2 switching.

Wavelength Services
Wavelength services have become a major source of revenue for CoCs and the demand for this service is increasing rapidly. Fast response and transparent connectivity for all service types are mandatory requirements for wholesale and enterprise applications. XDM's multidegree WSS ROADM technology, together with fully tunable lasers and power equalization capabilities, introduces a true agile optical network providing up to 40G wavelength to any node connectivity ("any-to-any") in ring or mesh topology. ECI's Network Design Platform (NDP) allows you to quickly design and optimize efficient networks based on network demand and span information, without predefined traffic demands. Service activation, rerouting wavelengths, or finding and optimizing network resources is performed faster, accelerating the time to revenue.

At present, most end customers demand full visibility of their network's performance. ECI's optical solution is based on Optical Transport Network (OTN) technology, which provides carrier-grade capabilities and ensures the appropriate QoS for each service type. SDH/SONET and Ethernet services can be groomed over a single pipe, while each service is kept intact with its overhead, original timing clock, and own protection scheme (in accordance with the end customer's SLA). XDM is designed to provide a cost-effective agile optical layer to any third party switch/router ("alien lambda"). Colored interfaces right off the end customer switch or router can be transmitted directly over the XDM photonic layer. This eliminates the need for an additional transponder in the XDM system, thereby reducing the overall network cost while maintaining full network visibility and reliability.

Cellular Traffic Backhauling

Traffic backhauling for cellular networks presents a major business opportunity for telecom operators. The launch of 3G networks has resulted in increased demand for capacity that needs to be transmitted from BTS/Node B to the central office. Since XDM supports non-blocking grooming starting from VC-12 upwards, CoCs with an XDM-based network can provide cellular traffic grooming from the BTS/Node B all the way to the cellular central office (first mile, second mile, or full connectivity). In current 3G networks, backhauling is based on ATM (usually ATM over E1). Further utilization can be provided by simply adding an ATM switching card that has been specifically designed for cellular networks.

Powerful NMS Accelerates Service Provisioning

The ECI product line is operated and managed end-to-end by a single management system, LightSoft - a unified NMS that offers a 360 view of network infrastructure and resources. LightSoft provisions, monitors, and controls all network layers, enabling the management of multiple technologies - SDH/SONET, data, and optical. On-demand service provisioning is configured by simple point-and-click procedures that respond quickly to new and unexpected traffic demands, reducing both operating and maintenance costs. While CoC networks often suffer from a lack of visibility, LightSoft offers advanced CNM services to end customers. These include network status, virtual topology views, and service provisioning. CNM has powerful security capabilities, enabling each end customer to view their network section only and no more. Activation and rerouting of services can be done by the end customer, responding in real time to network needs.

ECI Carries You Into the Future

CoC networks are evolving rapidly. The continued demand for bandwidth, as well as the introduction of Ethernet and wavelength-based leased line services, compels CoC operators to constantly seek ways to grow their networks. ECI Telecom has a long history of supporting CoC operators. We have future-proof optical transmission products covering all leasing options. The unique XDM architecture allows CoC operators to lease E1 all the way to SDH/SONET, Ethernet, and wavelength via a single platform. XDM provides transparent Ethernet and SDH/SONET connectivity. Each service is handled in its native environment, with minimized jitter and delay. The entire XDM network is managed end-to-end by an intelligent, powerful and simple-to-operate management system. ECI is a CoC's natural partner, providing a complete integrated cycle from network planning, through consultation, installation, and commissioning, to managed services all in a convenient, specialized, one-stop shop.
