Highly Insulating Windows

With a U-Value Less than 0.6 W/m2K

Unique Aerogel Forms and Processing

Aspen Aerogels Incorporated founded in 2001 Commercially producing flexible aerogel blanket insulation Unique processing IP: fast, efficient, low-cost Supercritical fluids processing technology independent of batch size R&D efforts laying the foundations for new products and markets (transparent window insulation, catalyst supports, filtration, low-cost insulation for residential and commercial use)

Aerogel Insulated Double Glazing Windows

No inert gases to leak out Should be less expensive than triple or quadruple glazed window units Windows will be lighter than triple glazed window units Aerogel will provide much better sound insulation performance Better light transmittance without low-e coatings

Energy Savings Benefits

Assume R-1.3 window average for US houses (=2/3(R1)+ 1/3(R2)) Assume aerogel windows will be R10/in or R-6/dg window Energy savings = 52% vs. R-2.86 (new); 83% vs. R-1; 67% vs. R-2

Cost savings $300/yr (R2-R6) Cost premium +$856/house vs. R-3.6 Est. payback 2.9 years

Thermal Insulation Requirements

External insulation temperature: -60 to 120 F Internal insulation temperature: ambient Thermal conductivity: 14.4 mW/m-K @ 100 F Transparency: 90% transmittance/cm thickness Resistance to opacification: hydrophobic matrix Mechanical resiliency goal: 15% flexural strain Target cost of raw insulation: $2 per square foot

At 12 mm, as transparent as glass
