After 37 years of service to the Fifth Avenue Church of Christ, Martha Kelly has resigned and will begin enjoying retirement as of Friday, September 2nd. It has been a true joy to work with Martha. She has been a great asset to this church as well as an outstanding Christian example for Christ. She will be missed around the office during the week. I am thankful to call her friend. Please pray for her as she transitions into this new phase of her life. May it be all shes hoped it would be! On September 11th, we will honor her during our first service. We hope you will join us.

Worship is not always easy, and it is not always fun. Sometimes sincere worship is painful. Because genuine worship takes place when we see God clearly, in all His holiness, worship often comes from a place of conviction and brokenness. Consider David in the aftermath of sin with Bathsheba, God preserved Davids life but the child born to Bathsheba died. While the boy was sick, David fasted and prayed, but when he was told the boy had died, II Samuel 12:20 says Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed, put on lotions and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the Lord and worshipped. Seeing God in His holiness convicts us in our sinfulness, but that Godly sorrow leads to repentance where we, like David, can worship and call on God to restore to us the joy of our salvation. Lord, show us our sin, that we might seek forgiveness and proclaim your mercy and grace. amen

A Note From Brad.

Hello Everyone! I am excited to share with you about our upcoming sermon series entitled: A Celebration of Discipline. Throughout this fall, we are hoping to assist you in becoming a stronger and more effective disciple of Christ. This has been our goal already this year as we have offered four studies with that intention in mind. Our Curious classes are designed for all who attend FACC and based upon discipleship. In addition to that effort, this sermon series will focus on allowing Jesus to be Lord of ALL your life so you will be challenged on PRAYER, FASTING, WORSHIP, BIBLE, SERVICE, and GIVING. I do hope you will commit to being here each week as we want you to grow and its hard to do that when you skip meals. Just a reminder, our Wednesday night studies for adults will begin again on September 14th!

Family Reunion will begin on September 14th @ 6:30 P.M. Each Wednesday evening will be different through out the month. Each night, will either be a time of worship and prayer, a Christian film, small group, or Bible study. This will be a great opportunity to get to meet new friends in a relaxed atmosphere. I do hope you will join us! Starting September 18th, we will offer a LIFE GROUP at Dan & Janet Browns home. This exciting study is based on the DVD series entitled: Not A Fan. They live at 924 Valley View Dr., Lancaster. The cost per person is $10 to cover the cost of the group resources. The goal of this study is to move you from being a fan of Jesus to an authentic follower. Led by Brad each Sunday night @ 6 P.M. Starting September 20th, we will offer an exciting new study by Frances Chan called FORGOTTEN GOD. This DVD driven study on the Holy Spirit and his role in your life will challenge you to stop living by your own strength and to begin living under His direction. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall and will begin at 6:30 P.M. The cost per person is $8.00. This group will be led by Brad.
Sunday, September 4, we will have a very special mystery speaker at the 6pm worship hour. Please join us!

Womens Bible Study Wednesday, September 14th 6:30pm Have you noticed how Christiandom is becoming so inclusive? Such as Jesus plus Buddah, or Jesus plus Islam, or Morman, or the right Bible version or the right music! Not anything new! Some Colossians were giving equal billing to some "cosmic forces" and had to be reminded ONLY JESUS gets top billing!

I Have Good Friends

By Glen Shady
Last week the Shady household experienced a car breakdown. As we are a one car household, we took notice. After having the car towed to the shop, the mechanic called to inform us that they had no keys. I told him that I did not have a car to drive them over, but I would try to get there as soon as possible. It was maybe 15-20 minutes later that I was handing him the keys and he says, Wow; that was quick. I simply responded, I have good friends. It is true; we definitely do have good friends here at Fifth Avenue. There are people that we know we can rely on, even when we ask too much of them. It is this type of camaraderie that naturally flows from fellowship and the Christian relationship. Sometimes we need to be reminded, though, that this kind of service is not enough. You can help a friend in need and not be a lover of Jesus. So what, as lovers of Jesus, can we offer each other that a friend of the world cannot? I have a few basic ideas that I am going to try to do better at personally and I encourage you to do the same. When you are visiting a brother or sister in Christ, bring your Bible. Then actually be willing to open it and read it. Be willing to talk about spiritual things. I am a firm believer that we naturally desire to talk about things that we are passionate about and even love. If you want to talk to me at any point about Elizabeth, for example, you had better get comfortable because I can go all day. If you talk about the weather, sports, kids, or good memories with your friends, but not about scripture or God, what is it that you truly are in love with or passionate about in your life? Finally, be willing to ask (and be asked) potentially uncomfortable questions. What have you read in the Bible this week? How has your prayer life been? Why were you not at church on Sunday? We cannot support each others weaknesses if you do not know what they are. We cannot claim to be in fellowship with other believers and only act like brothers and sisters in Christ on Sundays and Wednesdays. We cannot experience the true joy that a car ride to a mechanic brings until we experience the depth of Jesus love from a fellow believer. (For encouragement from scripture on living wholeheartedly for God and experiencing Christian relationships look to Deut. 6:1-9; John 17:20-26; Acts 2:42-47; Acts 4:32-35)

Prayer Concerns

That God would raise up workers from within the church who are passionate about working with young people Gods blessing of summer activities
