Flavius and Marullus are tribunes speak in senate for the common people Flavius scolds the citizens He is upset they are celebrating Caesars victories of pompeys son Citizens are in the streets on a working day with out their working clothes and tools Marullus describes the crowd of working people as plebians, vulgar and commoner Blocks VS men Lack brains and hearts Blocks and stones cannot move themselves Criticizing waving loyalty Marullus reminds the crowd that not long ago they had cheered Pompey. Now they cheer Caesar who defeated Pompey s sons Flavius suggests that to stop celebration, they: Take off decorations from Caesars statues Drive the commoners from the streets (away/home) so they stop celebrating Flavius says by plucking these growing feathers from Caesar s wing, well make him fly to an ordinary height His feathers= his supporters/followers and his accomplishments Get rid of him ends his celebration and takes away his power (to stop servile fearfulness) The common people see Caesar as a hero. But Marullus and Flavius consider Caesar a tyrant A fortune teller warns Caesar to beware the ides of march Ides of March = March 15th This means something bad will happen to him on that day Caesar ignores the fortune tellers warning and calls him a dreamer Doesn t take it seriously Brutus tells cassius that hes been harsh and distant lately because: There is a lot on his mind Hes at war with himself Overwhelmed Cassius says that many men wish that Brutus could see himself through their eyes Cassius insists that Brutus cannot see that he is a leader When Brutus hears the crowd shouting, hes afraid they chose Caesar as king Caesar is suspicious of Cassius

He thinks hes not trustworthy That he is a manipulator That he is jealous doesn t like to see others with more power Says he has a Lean and Hungry look (Hungry for what others have) Hes dangerous and thinks too much Caesar feels like he should avoid cassius First, Caesar refused the crown 3 times. Caesar offers to let the crowd cut his throat. Then he fell to the ground. During this time, the crowd cheered/claps and praised him as they do for actors in the theatre Casca believes that Caesars behavior in the arena is a set-up to fool the people Cassius plans to get Brutus to join the plot against Caesar by writing him false letters, from the people of rome, saying they need him to protect them and stop Casear from gaining control During a swimming match between Caesar and Cassius as boys, Caesar challenges Cassius to a match, but in the water Caesar was drowning (couldn t swim) and needed help, Cassius saved him Cassius points out that Caesar is physically weak and has epilepsy In Spain, Caesar had a Seizure Cassius tells Brutus that he is equally as powerful, if not more, than Caesar in hopes of him joining the plot Caesar is also deaf in one ear Thunder and lightening set the mood Bad things happen when the weather is bad Weather= foreshadowing Casca reacts strongly to the weather because he feels that it is foreshadowing the events to come bad events He takes it as a sign from angry gods Portentous= bad omen Cassius and Casca shake hands because Casca agrees to join the conspiracy against Caesar Cinna is a friend of Cassius side. Cassius has him go to Brutus and throw letters into his senate seat, statues and house. Letters are from people of rome Lucius is Brutus servant Soliloquy= a really long speech made by one character and revels there innermost thoughts Brutus feels the only way to save rome is to kill Caesar. He doesn t have anything personal against him but hes afraid if he is crowned that it might change who he is. Brutus calls him an ambitious man because he is climbing the social status ladder and when he gets to the top and becomes most powerful there will be corruption. Brutus believes they have to kill Caesar for a good cause, and kill him before he gets to the top. Cassius has planted a seed in him mind Sleep= a clear conscious. Lack of sleep= Inner turmoil

Brutus is torn between killing or not killing Caesar Doesn t want to but he has a lot of choices to make Brutus says if they aren t sure about killing Caesar, they should not. Brutus doesn t care if people swear allegience, we don t need an oath because what were doing is the morally right thing Don t ask Cicero to join the conspiracy because he wants to be a leader, not a follower. Brutus doesn t want someone who doesn t want to follow others
