Zeus- gods of the gods

In Greek mythology is the king of the gods, the ruler of Mount Olympus and the
god of the sky and thunder. His symbols are the thunderbolt, eagle, bull, and oak. In
addition to his Indo-European inheritance, the classical "cloud-gatherer" also derives
certain iconographic traits from the cultures of the ancient Near East, such as the scepter.
Zeus is frequently depicted by Greek artists in one of two poses: standing, striding
forward, with a thunderbolt leveled in his raised right hand, or seated in majesty.

Zeus was the child of Cronus and Rhea, and the youngest of his siblings. In most
traditions he was married to Hera, although, at the oracle of Dodona, his consort was
Dione: according to the Iliad, he is the father of Aphrodite by Dione. He is known for his
erotic escapades. These resulted in many godly and heroic offspring, including Athena,
Apollo and Artemis, Hermes, Persephone (by Demeter), Dionysus, Perseus, Heracles,
Helen, Minos, and the Muses (by Mnemosyne); by Hera, he is usually said to have
fathered Ares, Hebe and Hephaestus.
Poseidon

Poseidon- god of the sea

He was the god of the sea, as well as of horses, and, as "Earth-Shaker," of

earthquakes. The name of the sea-god Nethuns in Etruscan was adopted in Latin for
Neptune in Roman mythology: both were sea gods analogous to Poseidon. Linear B
tablets show that Poseidon was venerated at Pylos and Thebes in pre-Olympian Bronze
Age Greece, but he was integrated into the Olympian gods as the brother of Zeus and
Hades. Poseidon has many children. There is a Homeric hymn to Poseidon, who was the
protector of many Hellenic cities, although he lost the contest for Athens to Athena.

Poseidon was a major civic god of several cities: in Athens, he was second only to
Athena in importance; while in Corinth and many cities of Magna Graecia he was the
chief god of the polis. In his benign aspect, Poseidon was seen as creating new islands
and offering calm seas. When offended or ignored, he supposedly struck the ground with
his trident and caused chaotic springs, earthquakes, drownings and shipwrecks. Sailors
prayed to Poseidon for a safe voyage, sometimes drowning horses as a sacrifice.
Hades
The son of Cronus and Rhea. Hades is also known as Pluto in Roman mythology.
He is the God of Wealth because plants and rich minerals come from under the ground.
He is known for as being the wealthiest god. Hades has many relationships but is seen to
be most faithful to Persephone, his wife. He had three older sisters Hestia, Demeter, and
Hera. He also had two younger brothers Poseidon and Zeus. Hades had weaknesses
which included his strong passion for everything and his deceptive skills. These three
brothers wanted war against their father Cronus because they wanted more power than
they had. Zeus, Poseidon and Hades recieved weapons from the three cyclops to help in
war. Hades recieved a helmet of invisibility. This was very helpful when Hades stole all
the Titans weapons with them not noticing, because the
helmet made him invisible.
HERA

Hera- queen of the gods

Hera was the wife, and older sister of Zeus

pomegranete, emblem of fertile blood and death and a substitute for the narcotic capsule

as a Greek or Indo-European more seems to be a survival of a pre Greek "Great Goddess"
figure. Perhaps one of the most powerful females of the Minoan, or of some unidentified
pre-Greek people
Aphrodite
THE GODDESS OF LOVE

The greek god Aphrodite is the goddess of love and beauty. She is associated with the
planet Venus as it is also a symbol of beauty, lust, and love. Some of her other symblos
are the dove, myrtle, and heart. She is the most widely known god because of her
importance in peoples lives. When she wears her golden girdle made by her husband,
Hephaestus, she is irresistable and no one can resist her. Her power of love has her known
as the most often called upon goddess as well. She tempers with the affairs of the human
heart and hearts of many other beasts as well. She has the ability to make objects real,
make people fall in love with each other, or out of love with each other. Her power is a
great commodity and extremely powerful.

BIRTH
She was born from the blood and seed of Ouranus after Cronos castrated him and through
him into the sea. Bubble foam began to form from the blood and out came Aphrodite the
goddess of love and beauty. She walked upon shore and everywhere she stepped flowers
and grass bloomed from that spot. When she came to Mount Olympus, Zeus decided to
marry her off immediatly because of her icomperable beauty. Many attempted to court by
telling her that they would dote upon her with lavish gifts. Oddly, it was Hephestus whom
Aphrodite choose and for one sole reason. He stated," I'll make a good husband because I
work all day and will not return til late at night." This proposal was provoked by none
other than his mother Hera. So the goddess of love and beauty married Hephaestes, but
upon their wedding told all her siuters when to bring their many gifts to her. Aphrodite
plays at day while her husband Hephaestus works.
DEMETER

Demeter means the goddess of harvest. She taught mankind how to sow and plough so
that mankind can survive on their own. Demeter's symbol is having grain and wheat in
her hand. Demeter is also known for being called "mother earth" because of using
teaching these humans to plant and grow crops. Demeter is the daughter of Cronos and
Rhea. She was eaten by Cronos, and then thrown up after Cronos drank this potion.

Demeter and her brother Zeus had Persephone.

The Story of Demeter and Persephone:

Persephone was the daughter of Demeter and Zeus. She was out picking flowers and she
was snatched out from the underground. Persephone was captured by Hades. He took her
to the underworld and they wanted to get married. Demeter went looking for her and after
ten days, she went to Zeus. Demeter was really scared when she knew her daughter was
missing Zeus told Hermes to go down to the underworld and goes to get Persephone.
Demeter was really happy when she saw Persephone. Hades made a deal with Demeter
and for six months out of the year she will stay with Hades. Then the last six months then
she will spend it with Demeter. When Persephone was with Hades then the season was
Winter. When Persephone was with her mother it was the season of Spring.
HERMES
Hermes is known as the god of thieves, athletics, weights, measures, and commerce. He
is the messenger from gods to humans. He sends messages and transports bodies and
other objects for the gods. He escorts souls from the dead body to the Underworld.

Hermes is also given credit for inventing the Lyre. Which is an instrument, it is
made from the intestines of a cow, which are strung across an empty turtle shell. To play
the Lyre, you strum on the strings of intestines. He is also credited for inventing the
Alphabet.

Birth of Hermes

Hermes is the son of Zeus and Maia. Zeus is the God of the sky and is one of the most
powerful gods there is. Maia is the oldest and considered the most beautiful daughter of
Atlas and Pleione. Hermes was born as a result of one of Zeus’s love affairs.
Apollo
Apollo is the Greek archer-god of healing, light, truth, and archery. He is also a god of
music, poetry, and the sun. Apollo is the bringer of the plague. The main symbol to
represent this god is the Sacrificial Tripod. It was an altar that the Ancient Greeks used.
Another is the lyre, which is a type of stringed musical instrument. The last common
symbol of Apollo is the bow. Apollo was a child of Zeus and Hera, and also had a twin
brother, Artemis

Personality
Apollo was said to be a prophet, or that he could foresee upcoming events. He was also
very artistic. Apollo was said to have the ability to bring the dead back to life. Hades
complained whenever he did this. Some weaknesses of Apollo include that he was too
happy to enjoy the nymphs and that he had a very long list of conquests. He was also said
to be very creative.
ARTEMIS

Artemis is the goddess of hunting, childbirth and fertility, wild animals, and in some
cases, the moon. She is sometimes represented by the crescent moon. In Roman myths,
she is reffered to as Diana. Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and a nymph named Leto,
and twin sister to the sun god, Apollo. Artemis is considered quick to anger and
possesive. She was a virgin goddess and made the nymphs that attended her take the
same vow of chastity. She was also protective. One story involves Niobe, a woman with
twelve children. She boasted that she had six daughters and six sons, and Leto only had
one of each. As punishment for her insult to their mother, Artemis and Apollo killed all
twelve of her children: Apollo killing the sons, Artemis the daughters.

There are no documented accounts of Artemis teaching anything to man. However, she
was a skilled hunter, and it's possible that the ancient Greeks believed that they learned
this skill from her. It was also said that she was the Moon goddess (in contrast to her
twin, Apollo, the sun god.)

Artemis was feircely protective of the chastity of herself and her nymph hand maidens.
One account tells of Actaeon, who had the misfortune of seeing the goddess while she
was bathing in a stream. When Artemis saw him, she was so furious she had him turned
into a stag, then fed to his hounds. Another tale tells of the Cretan Siproites who, after
seeing the goddess bathing, was turned into a woman.
ATHENA
Athena- goddess of wisdom and counsel

Long, long ago Zeus had a baby with this girl. But some people say that he didnt have a
baby's mama at all- She had no mother . And out popped "Athena" right out of his
forehead. The baby was Athena. Athena had pretty brown eyes and a big hairy unibrow.
She is a virgin Goddess. She always carried around her shield and had a helmet on top of
her head. Everyone loved her the most. Her symbol is an Owl to show her wisdom. She
has great craft and shes an amazing weaver. The Athens people loved her so much, that
they named their city after her. Athena is extremely jelous!! Even though she is kind and
has great wisdom, jelousy over powers that. There are many stories of these Gods and
Goddesses. Arachne is a good weaver and she thinks she is better then Athena. Athena
herd Arachne talking about her one day and got real mad. So, Athena flew down to
Arachne's home and told her she was going to kill her for talking about the Gods. The
little girl was scared, but had to give Athena a gift before she died. She gave her a cloak,
so it would keep her warm up in the mountian.
ARES
Ares, the Greek god of war, is the only son of Zeus and Hera. He is disliked by
both of his parents. He has one sister, Eris, the goddess of strife. He has three sons,
Deimos, Phobos, and Enyo. Ares is tall and handsome, but vain and cruel. His symbols
are the spear and the helmet. His bird is the vulture and his animal is the dog. According
to mythology, war, battles, and bloodshed were his major preoccupations. So, basically
war and fighting were his strengths. Although, in one of the stories that I found Ares was
defeated by Diomedes. He had been defeated, so in some situations Ares weakness could
also be war. All in all, he does not have much of a personality. Ares gift or importance is
his ability to fight in war. He is great fighting in battle, and a great warrior.
Hephaestus
Hephaestus is the greek god of technology. He was worshiped for his technologial skill in
Greece, specially in Athens. He was specifically known for skills in blacksmith,
craftmans, artisans, scluptors, metals, and fire. His work has also been identified in Italy.

Story of Hephaestus

His father is the strong and powerful Zues, and his mother was the gorgeous Hera.
Having the most attractive gods for parents he was expected to be the most beautiful
baby. When he was born people where shocked to see he was horribly ugly. He was
hurled of Olympus by Hera, afraid Zues would be angry by how the baby looked. He was
taken under sea and raised by a naiad, named Thetis. Hera found out how good
Hephaestus was at making goods such as jewelry and demanded him back. Hephaestus
returned back to Olympus. He became the god of mechanics and technology.
EROS
Eros, the Greek god of love and sexual desire (the word eros, which is found in the Iliad
by Homer, is a common noun meaning sexual desire). He was also worshiped as a
fertility god, believed to be a contemporary of the primeval Chaos, which makes Eros one
of the oldest gods. In the Dionysian Mysteries Eros is referred to as "protagonus", the
first born. But there are many variations to whom the parents of Eros really where.
According to Aristophanes (Birds) he was born from Erebus and Nyx (Night); in later
mythology Eros is the offspring of Aphrodite and Ares. Yet in the Theogony, the epic
poem written by Hesiod, it mentions a typified Eros as being an attendant of Aphrodite,
but not her son. Another legend says that he was the son of Iris and Zephyrus.

From the early legend of Eros it is said that he was responsible for the embraces of
Uranus (Heaven or Sky) and Gaia (Earth), and from their union were born many
offspring. It was also written that Eros hatched our race and made it appear first into the
light (Birds, by Aristophanes). Although one of the oldest gods, he was a latecomer to
Greek religion. He was worshiped in many regions of Greece, at Thespiae there was an
ancient fertility cult, and in Athens he and Aphrodite had a joint cult. Also in Athens the
fourth day of every month was sacred to Eros. Sometimes Eros was worshiped by the
name Erotes (which is the plural of Eros); this personified all the attractions that evoked
love and desire, this included heterosexual and homosexual allurements. Anteros (the
Returner of Love also known as the god of Mutual Love) was the brother of Eros, which
comes from the version of which Aphrodite and Ares are said to be the mother and father
of Eros.
