Building a 7 Habits Culture, Foundation for Leadership

USS SANTA FE EXPERIENCES A 180-DEGREE TRUNAROUND IN PERFORMANCE DUE TO THE 7 HABITS The submarine USS Santa Fe became one of the most improved ships in the Navy due to Commander Dave Marquets dedication to practice the 7 Habits. When Commander David Marquet took over the USS Santa Fe, he brought new determination to the task of commanding one of the most advanced warships in the world. The Santa Fe had posted a mediocre performance record, but within two years, received the Arleigh Burke Trophy for the most improved ship in the Pacific Fleet. The Navy recognized the Santa Fe for top-notch deployment, dramatic improvements in all inspection grades, as well as significant improvement in retention and morale. Commander Marquet employed The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People as the foundation of his approach to command. I have been an advocate of the 7 Habits from early on. I have to implement a leadership style consistent with the 7 Habits. I give every junior officer who reports aboard a copy of the book. We conduct leadership seminars which use the 7 Habits as a framework. The book is so profound and fundamental that I use it as a basis and foundation, says Cdr. Marquet. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is applicable to all aspects of the ships performance. The 7 habits have tremendous application because sailors need to take responsibility, thats Habit 1; have some sense of purpose and values that guide their lives, which is Habit 2; they need to live by them, which is the integrity habit, Habit 3; learn to be a part of the team- learn win-win, which is Habit 4; learn to listen and courageously express themselves, so the habit of communication is Habit 5; learn to be creative and come up with better solutions, which is Habit 6; and last of all, to constantly renew- the way they continually train, educate, learn and take care of maintenance- thats Habit 7, Stephen R. Covey said of the crew of the Santa Fe. The book has tremendous potential for those who havent read it yet. I reread his book over and over again, and every time I read it, I get something new out of it, said Marquet. According to Mike Bruner, the Chief of the Boat, You can think of a submarine as a big family, so a lot of the points Dr Covey raised about the cohesion of family cn be applied to submariners. The same rules apply. Bruner says that Santa Fe crew has done a 180-degree turnaround in all aspects since applying lessons from the 7 Habits. Better reenlistment rates and enhanced inspection results are a few examples that demonstrate positive trends for the ship. From 1998 to 1999 we saw enlistment increase by a factor of seven. I attribute that to the fact that theyre getting a lot more personal satisfaction out of their jobs. And thats a direct result of using Dr. Coveys ideas, said Marquet.
