(ARA) - Plenty of tender, loving care
went into those vegetable seedlings
planted this spring. Weeks of water-
ing, weeding, pruning and feeding
have likely resulted in a harvest so
bountiful, it is beginning to over-
whelm the kitchen.
What an exciting sight to have
watched that seedling grow with
sunshine, water and good soil in the
backyard garden or patio container
garden to produce such a plethora
of fresh vegetables. By harvest time,
tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and cu-
cumbers weigh down the vines and
stems of the formerly tiny seedlings,
and many gardeners are running out
of storage space and recipe ideas for
all the incredible vegetables picked at
the height of freshness.
So what can be done with the garden
leftovers? Donating and gifting are
two great ways to help friends and the
community with fresh produce. Mir-
acle-Gro and Americas Test Kitchen
teamed up to provide recipes that are
perfect for parties, providing a deli-
cious meal for a shut-in and sharing
with co-workers.
Tomatoes from the garden can be
canned and easily transformed into
chili, spaghetti or pizza sauce even
into the winter months. From salsa

and cucumber salad, these popular
foods will have family and friends
enthusiastically eating garden veg-
etables all summer long. Expand the
menu options by growing some dif-
ferent vegetables or herbs each year,
and investigate new recipes that may

Create gift baskets for friends and
neighbors with excess fresh produce.
Whether celebrating the summer
holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, or
for no reason at all, summer crops
can inspire a variety of gifts. Ask your
friends for their favorite recipes fea-
turing delicious vegetables and herbs.
Then, print out the best recipes on
colorful cardstock and bundle up the
ingredients, including fresh produce
from the garden, giving the whole
package as a gift. Who wouldnt be
overjoyed to receive a fabulous gour-
met meal in the making?
Donate any extra harvest to a lo-
cal food shelter where it will beneft
members of the community. Contact
local food pantries prior to harvest-
ing the vegetables to fnd out what re-
strictions they might have on garden
vegetables. If the local food pantry
does not accept fresh produce, con-
tact area churches to see if any have a
food donation program established.
While the frst harvest is exciting, do
not forget to continue nurturing re-
maining plants in the garden. Some
plants will produce vegetables until
the weather gets considerably cooler,
allowing for the enjoyment of fresh
produce well into the fall. Ensure
that plants have enough water, and
continue pulling weeds competing
with vegetable plants for water and
nutrients.

living space is one that can only be
used during the warm-weather months.
However, if done right, individuals can
enjoy outdoor rooms for much of the year.
Creating a comfortable, intimate and
private outdoor space offers a spot to
which a person can retire after a long
day especially a person who enjoys the
delights of Mother Nature. Outdoor rooms
can be customized depending on the space
one has, meaning homeowners or renters
with any size yard or patio area can enjoy
an outdoor room.
Starting the project frst requires
determining where the outdoor space will
be situated. Most people prefer to keep it
close to the house for easy access. Its also
important to consider how many seasons
will be enjoyed outdoors. This will
determine the accessories needed. For
example, those who want to stretch out-
door living into the late autumn may want
to invest in a chiminea or outdoor freplace
to provide a focal point and warm place to
converge when the weather is brisk. Those
who only desire a summer area may want
an arbor or pergola to keep the area cooler
when the sun is scorching.
Keep in mind that this area of the
outdoors should be private; otherwise it
probably wont be used much. Plants, trel-
lis, garden structures, and other elements
can help to keep the area blocked off from
prying eyes. Bamboo is a fast-growing
grass that will make an effective privacy
screen.
Next, consider plants that provide
aesthetic appeal. If the outdoor room will
be used for three seasons, use a variety
of plants that will ensure blooms all year
long. Consider plants that will feed wildlife
and attract
butterfies and birds. Greenery tends to
create a relaxing space. Dont forget a few
evergreen shrubs or trees if the space will
be enjoyed past the summer.
Think about comfortable furniture to add
to the space. Stores sell so many different
varieties of outdoor furniture, from
traditional patio sets to chaises and sofas
that rival ones that would normally be
found indoors. Accessorize as one would
inside, adding side tables, throw pillows
(in weather-resistant fabrics) and ot-
tomans. The goal is comfort and conve-
nience.
Dont forget lighting. While theres bound
to be plenty of sunlight during the day,
individuals who want to sit outdoors at
night should think about wired or solar
lighting. Candles or a fre in a fre pit also
can provide ample illumination.
Homeowners going above and beyond
can shield the outdoor room from the
elements even further by building a
screened-in
outdoor space. This will help keep bugs at
bay and provide shelter if it rains.
Use curtains or shutters to give the area a
cozy appeal.
