Irene wreaks havoc in Back Mountain

Hurricane uproots trees, knocks out power and leaves a mess to clean.
By SARAH HITE shite@mydallaspost.com

Cool, calm weather was the forecast this past week but in the Back Mountain, the emotional atmosphere was anything but calm. Hurricane-turned-Tropical Storm Irene ripped through the area late Saturday into Sunday, uprooting trees, knocking out power for thousands and causing a mess that residents are still cleaning. The American Red Cross and emergency service crews in the Back Mountain responded to help the multitude of resiFor more dents withstorm-related out power or photos, please water. turn to pages 10 Hundreds came out to a and 11. refreshing station at the Dallas Fire & Ambulance building on East Center Hill Road on Monday, looking for a quick bite to eat and fresh water to drink. The fire station, which also served as the Back Mountain Regional Emergency Management Agencys command center, also offered cleanup kits for residents in need. Diane Morse, of Dallas Township, was hoping to find some food to take home that didnt need to be cooked. By Monday, shed been without power for more than 24 hours. We ate out a lot but now were starting to run out of money, she said. All of our food is going to spoil. Morse said during the storm a tree fell on her house on Harris Street, and she and her family tried to stay out of the house as much as possible to get away from the stressful situation. We drove around a lot yesterday, and today I got my daughter some new glasses, she said. We keep coming home thinking, Maybe the power will be back on. Many residents had their power restored by late Tuesday or Wednesday, but some residences in hard-to-reach areas may not have electrical service restored for a week or longer. Nikki Butler and her mother, Thelma Baker, spent a few days at Bakers home in Noxen trying to clean up and move on from the storm. Nine months pregnant, Butler was staying with her mother be-

cause there was no vehicular access to her own home on Stull Road. They had to make a trail for quads to come through, she said, filling a bucket from a water buffalo on Main Street. Butler hasnt been able to go to work because shes trying to clean up around her home and wait for services to return. Shes also keeping an eye on her daughter, whos due on September 8. Her basement was flooded during the storm and many keepsakes, like Christmas decorations and her childrens belongings, were ruined. Its stressful, said Baker. I keep thinking there are people in worse situations than I am. Everything can be replaced. In Harveys Lake, the fire department and road crews worked to keep residents calm while pumping water out of basements and cutting down fallen trees. Borough councilman Rich Williams III said he and others had been working day and night to help residents in need. On Sunday, I slept in the fire

hall for a few hours and Monday I slept in (the borough building) in a chair for a few minutes, he said. I slept at my home for the first time (Tuesday) and I didnt even make it to the bed I slept in the recliner. Officials offered the municipal building as an evacuation shelter after Mayor Clarence Hogan declared a state of emergency in the borough. Volunteers dished out hot dogs and other refreshments for residents and were able to give every resident one 20-pound bag of ice to keep food from spoiling. Most of the offerings came out of volunteers pockets and the goodness of their hearts. Williams said the neighborly spirit

at Harveys Lake was at its peak during the ordeal. We had a fireman who had a tree fall on his house and it did some really bad damage, he said. He took his wife and son to the fire house and said, Well worry about our house when everyone else is taken care of. Similar efforts were taken within the Lake-Lehman School District. Officials moved the first day of school for students from August 29 September 6, giving

Final witness speaks at Chief zoning hearing

By SARAH HITE shite@mydallaspost.com

Chief Gathering LLC presented its fifth and final witness at a township zoning hearing Tuesday in support of its application to build a natural gas metering station off Hildebrandt Road near the Dallas School District cam-

pus. James Scott, senior vice president of the company since its inception in 2008, testified to offer more information about the project, including its physical details. The proposed project will consist of a metering facility to measure gas from a gathering line that collects natural gas from wells as far as Susquehanna County. The gathering line would run through the metering station to connect to the Transco interstate pipeline, located near the Dallas schools, which would then send the gas to market.

Noxen Historical Society volunteers fight back over changes to building

Supervisors change rules regarding old school, including primary manager.
By SARAH HITE shite@mydallaspost.com

UP NEXT
The next Noxen Township Board of Supervisors meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at the Old Noxen School on School Street.

The old schoolhouse on School Street has been a part of the Noxen Township community for more than a century. The building was a high school and elementary school before becoming a community center that housed a library, clothing donations, art lessons and the Noxen Historical Society. Its rooms are available for residents who wish to host parties or events, and organizations can rent space for meetings and activities. A scheduling conflict has caused the primary overseers of the building to change, and those who put sweat and money into the buildings restoration are fighting back. At a township meeting this

summer, the board of supervisors voted to change some rules in relation to the community center, including its primary manager, according to Supervisor Denise Hosey. Cathie Pauley, former head of the historical society and the buildings former manager, said the issue was started when a wrestling group wanted space on the second floor for practice. I said we had one room available, she said. They brought in the wrestling mats (in both rooms) anyway. Pauley had worries about the effect wrestlers would have on the 114-year-old buildings structure, as the historical society has raised more than $150,000 restoring the facility within the last 10 years. She said much of the work

was done by volunteers, and money has always come from donations and grants. Hosey said now the township will be in charge of handling construction in the building. She said when the scheduling conflict occurred, the supervisors wanted to take a closer look at how the building was managed. She said the supervisors worked with a lawyer to see how the township-owned building should be operated. She said the township pays for the buildings heat, electric, insurance and taxes, so the township should have a say in how rooms are rented. Monies from room rentals have always benefited the townships recreation fund. No organization has been

kicked out, said Hosey. Pauley thinks differently. She said the historical association was given until the end of August to remove its assets from the premises. Some items include tables, chairs, a refrigerator and the groups collection of historical artifacts. Now were housed in my daughters garage, said Paulie. Its been really hard. Chuck Kovalick, a local artist, hosted painting classes at the community center for years. He charged students just $5 a month and donated the proceeds for scholarships at Luzerne County Community College. Hes heartbroken by the buildings change of hands and is still thinking about whether or not to continue his classes. All his paintings on display on the second floor had to be removed due to the wrestling groups rental of two rooms. They (the township) want my money, he said.

CHARLOTTE BARTIZEK/ FOR THE DALLAS POST

The former Noxen Elementary School has become a community center for events and library as well as a clothes closet.

Paulie is especially concerned about the future of the building because she wanted to make it a place for kids to get off the streets and hopes the programs shes begun will continue despite the change in management. Years ago, the township didnt want the building so we formed and made it so this wouldnt be on the taxpayers backs, she said. Now they (the township) think theyre going to make money off of this.

Hosey said back when the building was donated to the township by the Lake-Lehman School District, there were no rules placed or any official actions documented on the building. Now supervisors just want to ensure the township, which is responsible for the upkeep of the structure, maintains the control bestowed to it. We just need to follow a different set of rules, she said.

Speed trailer is first purchase of partnership

By SARAH HITE shite@mydallaspost.com

Police chiefs and road crews from Dallas Borough and Dallas, Jackson, Kingston and Lehman townships attended an informational training session on August 25 at the Kingston Township Municipal Building to learn about a radar speed monitoring trailer. The speed trailer, called the RU2FAST 8000 Radar Speed Display Trailer, is the first joint purchase of the Back Mountain Community Partnership. It was bought through the states coop- See SPEED, Page 14

erative purchasing program, called CO-STARS. The cost for the device was $8,625 split five ways, or $1,725 for each participating municipality. Franklin Township opted not to join the venture as it does not have its own police department. Partnership Vice Chairman John Wilkes Jr., representing Jackson Township, said the trailer training signifies the completion of the first project members of the partnership have worked on together. Talks of the joint purchase began late last year,

Heres a Halloween riddle for you: What do a pizza slice, a NASA helmet and fatigues have in common? More than you think. Its no trick three local Girl Scouts are collecting Halloween costumes, including the aforementioned getups, to ensure underprivileged children have the opportunity to celebrate the girls favorite holiday. Megan Galasso, of Shavertown, Katie Gushka, of Swoyersville, and LeeAnn Mahalick, of Kingston, have started to collect childrens costumes and other goods in order to organize a Halloween party on September 25 for children of the Marion Terrace Boys & Girls Club in Wilkes-Barre. The girls are working on the service project to earn their Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. Creating a project to earn the award is optional for the Scouts, who are part of Troop 3912 in Kingston. Galasso, Gushka and Mahalick earned their Bronze Award with the rest of their troop two years ago when they worked together to collect toys and food for animals of the S.P.C.A. of Luzerne County. This year, the three girls are working together for the Silver Award, and they hope to work towards the Gold Award, the highest Girl Scout achievement, soon after. If you get all of them, it helps you, Gushka said of the awards. People will think, Shes a good person.

Megan Galasso, Katie Gushka and Lee Ann Mahalick try on donated Halloween costumes. The Girl Scouts hope to collect more costumes.

The girls chose a Halloweenthemed project because its their favorite holiday (tied with Christmas) and the timing was right. The party will be held in late September so costumes can be distributed to the children to use during the entire month of October when schools usually hold Halloween activities. We chose to do this because some kids cant afford costumes and when their classmates are all dressed up, they might feel left out or people will make fun of them, said Gushka. Galassos mother, Meredith, also said the girls arent sure

how many children will be in attendance at the party, so the more costumes, the better. Only a few costumes have been collected for the project so far. The girls will also collect decorations, paper products, pumpkins, games, food, drinks and candy for the party. Theres no budget for this, said Meredith Galasso. Any

donations will help. Mahalick said the project fits in line with what Girl Scouts has provided for her over the years. Shes been a part of the organization for three years, Galasso for nine and Gushka for 10 years. You get to help people, go places and learn new things, said Mahalick.

HARPIN ON THINGS

fter this past weekends weather event, Im sure everyone is looking forward to Labor Day weekend and some time off with friends and family cooking burgers and dogs on the grill. Hopefully, power is back on for all and cleanup and repairs are either completed or in the final stages so Heffernan that the last holiday of the summer may be enjoyed. Our Sunday morning started at 3 a.m. with one of the cats landing on my head in bed after being startled by something hitting the window. As it was trying to be-

Now that we have power, we can grill for the Labor Day weekend A
come my new gray toupee (I dont need any help since the gray is getting thick enough), I peeled it off before the claws were firmly sunk in and told the Mrs., who was already awake, that I forgot to put up the hurricane shutters. Youre not in Florida any more, dear, she said as I furiously clicked my heels together to make it come true. And why is the cat stuck to your head? One of the last hurricanes we endured in the Keys struck in the middle of the night. The Mrs. had asked me to put up the shutters but, according to the weather service, the storm was going to track to our east and we would only get 35 mph winds (a mere inconvenience down there), so I declined. I recall it being around 4 a.m. when a coconut bounced off the side of the house, announcing that the storm had decided not to follow the pattern the weather people had suggested. I went outside into a driving rain with steady 50 mph wind and higher gusts, head lamp on, vise grips for the wing nuts, wrestling 24 by 72 inch pieces of aluminum to cover the windows. The car was being beaten by a Gumbo Limbo tree and a tree had fallen on the neighbors porch. What a morning. Following the rude awakening last Sunday, the Mrs. was worried about her car which had sustained severe hail damage earlier this summer. I told her not to worry because Ken at Quality Collision already had it and was fixing the hail damage. Its funny what you think about after being awakened from a heavy sleep. What about your car? she asked. The new, used car (an 04 with only 116k miles, barely broken in) was safely stored in the garage after recently being purchased from Wyoming Valley Motors and Huntsvilles car salesman extraordinaire Ed Brighthaupt. A few days before the storm, I took the Mrs. for her first ride in the vehicle out to the Red Rooster for a late dinner. Brittany was our waitress and informed us that the drive through was closed as was evident by the hand painted CLOSED sign on the inside of the restaurant. Its nice to see they have a sense of humor about what could have been a tragedy after a car plowed through their walls. It was also nice to see local people help out a good restaurant patch things up so they could continue to operate. Asked about her plans for the Labor Day weekend, Brittany said she was getting ready for classes at Misericordia and spending time with her daughter, Kenzie. Checking on peoples plans for the holiday, I stopped at Steve Shannon Tires where Len Krispin was planning to stay at home and John Moran was going to have a party at home to celebrate family birthdays. Rich at Dallas Hardware was having a family day with wife, Misty, and kids, Johnnie and Spencer, going to the Waverly train station in the morning and spending the afternoon at home. Dave Fleury of the Dallas Gun Shop was going to spend time at home but reminded everyone of the Dallas Harvest Festival later this month and that Dallas merchants would be open. I also ran into Judy Eby and Bonnie Kunkle at Roth Jewelers. Judy was staying close to home

with her husband, Barry, since they had already vacationed in Jamaica this summer and Bonnie and her husband, Bruce, were hoping to get to their cabin in Dushore for the weekend. The Atta Boy of the Week goes to all the volunteer firemen and women who gave their time and effort in assisting people following the storm. The only entertainment we had for the better part of two days was the scanner and it was nonstop with calls for help and volunteers responding. Way to go and thank you.

Art work at library

Oh!riginals, a variety of techniques and media to produce artistic expression, is the September exhibit at the Back Mountain Memorial Librarys Art Wall featuring works of art by Dorothy Teresinski WitheyCarroll. These are the many names by which the students of the Back Mountain schools have known Ms. Carroll, as she was the head of the art department of the Dallas School District for over 30 years. Ms. Carrolls enthusiasm and love for art began in her early childhood years and continued as she received her Bachelors of Art degree from Penn State University and her Masters of Art degree from New York University. Her appreciation for individual creativity has inspired her many students to continue in the art field with careers as artists, teachers, designers, etc. Ms. Carroll tells us that everyone is endowed with the

Joseph Pagoda, of Lehman Township, his sons, Christopher, of Conshohocken, and Aaron, of Philadelphia, and his nephew Walter Pagoda III, of Plymouth, recently traveled to the summit of Pagoda Mountain in Colorados Rocky Mountain National Park. The mountain was named in 1911 by Dean Babcock who thought the peak reminded him of a Pagoda temple.

Conquering Pagoda Mountain

Pagoda Mountain (13,505) lies in northern Rocky Mountain National Park and shares a ridgeline with Longs Peak (14,289). The Pagodas started making plans in 2010 and, once their request for backcountry campsites was approved by the park office, plans fell into place. They backpacked on August 1 up through the Glacier Gorge valley. Setting out at 3 p.m., they reac-

hed the summit of Pagoda Mountain at 10 a.m. where they spent 40 minutes taking photographs and videos of the surrounding Rocky Mountains. After two more days of backpacking in the park, they hiked out, ending their trip with additional sightseeing, a tour of the New Belgium Brewery in Fort Collins, Co. and a stay in downtown Denver for a celebratory dinner. STRANGE BUT TRUE

By Samantha Weaver It was revered American comedian Bill Cosby who made the following sage observation: Human beings are the only creatures that allow their children to come back home. Heres a disturbing statistic for parents: If your child is like the average American youth, between the ages of 5 and 15 he or she will see approximately 13,500 people killed on television. Most languages change dramatically over time. If we in modern America were to try to read Beowulf (which was written in Old English), for instance, only those who have spent time studying the language would be able to make out more than a word or two here and there. If youre from Iceland, however, this isnt the case; the written language there has remained virtually unchanged for more than 1,000 years. Modern Icelanders have no trouble reading sagas that were written in the 10th century. Relative to body size, humans - unsurprisingly - have larger brains than any other animal. Of non-human animals, its the bottlenose dolphin that has the largest brain. When Great Britains current Queen Elizabeth - then Princess Elizabeth - wed Prince Philip, their wedding cake weighed a whopping 500 pounds. As legend has it, in 1288, when Dusseldorf, Germany, was granted its city charter, children all over the city began turning cartwheels for joy. The cartwheel has been an enduring part of the culture there ever since, and in 1937 the city even inaugurated an annual international cartwheel championship. Those who study such things claim that when youre playing Monopoly, youre likely to land on Illinois Avenue and the B&O Railroad more than on any other squares.

This summer members of Dallas Boy Scout Troop #281 assisted the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society at their reenactment of the Battle of Wyoming at the grounds of the Swetland Homestead by providing a food booth during both days of the event. This tree which fell across Machell Avenue in Dallas onto the property of Pauline Kutz was still blocking the road Tuesday afternoon.

ack Mountain residents braved ripping winds and heavy rains Sunday as Hurricane-turned-Tropical Storm Irene swept through the area. The storm left thousands without electricity and water but gave many a mess to clean up. Debris and fallen trees blocked roadways and rushing water flooded basements. Emergency crews were hard at work this week cleaning up the mess. The Back Mountain Regional Emergency Management Agency set up a command center at the Dallas Fire & Ambulance station on East Center Hill Road in Dallas and offered residents cleanup kits to weather the storm. Water buffaloes were stationed throughout the area for residents to use for drinking and cleaning. Local stores that had power were busier than ever as residents stocked up on items such as batteries, flashlights, propane, water and generators. Some stores ran out of items before they could be replenished with new orders, leaving residents to depend on their neighbors for help. Bill Stivers , of Beaumont , gets While many areas have bottled water at the Dallas Fire had electricity restored, and Ambulance building. there are still parts of the Back Mountain dealing with no power. Schools in the area, including the Lake-Lehman School District that had to postpone its start date from August 29 to September 6, have stepped up to help out citizens, from providing facilities for showering to offering a place to recharge electrical devices. - Sarah Hite People wait in long lines for hot food in Noxen.

Remembering the FALLEN

Dallas High School graduate Mike Cleary lost his life in Iraq on December 20, 2005 but the Back Mountain community has not forgotten him. The annual Run for the Fallen, initiated after Lt. Clearys death, was held on August 17 at Penn State WilkesBarre. All proceeds benefit the 1st Lt. Michael J. Cleary Memorial Fund, Wounded Warrior Project, Yellow Ribbon Fund, Gold Star Family Support Center and Dallas Track and Cross Country. A group of Clearys friends led the first National Run for the Fallen, a memorial run across the United States, on June 14, 2008. Participants ran one mile dedicated to each soldier who died fighting in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, leaving a memorial placard and an American flag for each soldier. That same year, a group of Dallas Senior High School students held their own local Run for the Fallen, a 5K event to commemorate 1st Lt. Cleary and all soldiers who died during the conflict. Now in its fourth year, the Run for the Fallen was sponsored this year by the Dallas track and cross country teams. Results are as follows: FEMALE Overall 1. Ally Rome 21:22 2. Erin Moreck 21:57 3. The Dallas Junior Mounts D Team rolled over the defending Super Bowl runner-up Back Mountain Bobcats, 24-0, on August 21, scoring a touchdown on the first play of the game and never looking back. LIONS DONATE TO LIBRARY

Pritchard notes 95th birthday

A gathering of the family of Ruth Pritchard, of Trucksville, to celebrate her 95th birthday took place recently in Staunton, Virginia. The party was hosted by Cynthia Pritchard, Ruths granddaughter, and Cynthias daughter, Hannah Edmiston, Ruths great-granddaughter. The occasion was also the first meeting of five generations of the Pritchard family. Attending were Ruths son, Jack, and his wife, Sandy, from Nokomis, Florida; and Ruths daughter, Vernalee Pritchard Holman, from Rangeley, Maine. Jacks son, Vern, and Verns daughter, Claire, came from Jacksonville, Florida. Also, Cynthias son, Wayne Edmiston, and his daughter, Charlotte, came from Des Moines, Iowa, along with Cynthias son, Jack Edmiston, and his wife, Erica, and their son, Geraint, from San Antonio, Texas. Additionally, Judy Pritchard from Daphne, Alabama, widow of Ruths son, the late Robert Pritchard, and Judys daughter, Sandy Pritchard Vernon, from Gloucester, Virginia, with her children, Andrew, Sarah and Matthew attended the reunion. Back Mountain will be better equipped to handle speeding situations. Though the trailer cannot be used to enforce the speed limit, it will give residents a better idea of how fast they are traveling and what traffic is really like in the area. People perceive traffic by volume and speed, said Balavage. If we put this on a particular street, it will give a true and correct sum of all cars that went up and down that road

The Dallas Lions Club recently made a $500 donation to the Back Mountain Memorial Library for the purchase of large print books and other materials for the sight-impaired. The library has many large-print books as well as books on CDs and audio tapes and is anticipating e-book readers in the near future. This is the 26th consecutive year in which the club has made a donation to the library. Shown here making the check presentation to Martha Butler, librarian, are Lions Don Berlew, Joe Canfield, treasurer; and Frank Rollman.

Wyoming County EMA activates recovery teams

The Wyoming County Emergency Management Agency has activated both state and regional Incident Management Teams to assist local resources in the recovery process in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. Fortunately, there are no reports of fatalities or serious injuries following the storm that swept through the region on August 28. However, the agency is aware of the burden placed on residents by virtue of road closures, flooding and power and utility outages that have occurred, and assures residents that all possible actions are underway to resolve these challenges. Joint Assessment Teams are in the field across the region, gathering information to determine eligibility for FEMA emergency assistance. Should funds become available, residents will be instructed on the application process once that information is provided to the County EMA. The municipalities of Forkston and Noxen have been hit most severely with areas of inaccessibility, flooding and power and phone outages still persisting. Drinking water and hand-washing stations, dumpsters and portable lavatories have been staged at the following locations: Forkston: Main Street at the Grange Noxen: Adjacent to the firehouse, adjacent to the township building The Department of Environmental Protection will provide water-testing kits to residents whose wells have been impacted. Specific instructions and procedures are included in these kits and must be followed exactly in order to provide accurate test results. These kits can be picked up at the Wyoming County EMA, Route 6, Tunkhannock or the Wyoming County Conservation District Office, located at 21 Hollowcrest Rd., Tunkhannock. Additionally, residents whose basements have been contaminated by heating oil should contact the Wyoming County EMA Office at 836-2828 for assistance. Phone and power company crews are working around the clock to restore electricity and cell access to all affected; however, estimates are not currently available as to when this work will be completed. Approximately 550 people were still without electricity on Thursday. Evans-Falls Elementary School in the Tunkhannock Areas School District remains closed at this time. State Route 29 (Eatonville Bridge) will likely remain closed until at least Friday. The EMA and Wyoming County commissioners extend their gratitude to all of the responders and volunteers who continue to work tirelessly to resolve the problems resulting from the storm. As the current forecast calls for additional rainfall within the next few days, residents are encouraged to be vigilant in their preparedness for rising streams and localized flash flooding. All storm-related damage, both individual and municipal, should be reported to the Wyoming County EMA at 836-3399. Additional questions should be directed to Katie Kamp, ECTF Planning Specialist, at 836-2828.

families a chance to deal with the aftermath of Irene. After we saw the amount of devastation, we knew families had to take a collective deep breath, said district superintendent James McGovern. Here, we always say family comes first, so we truly did need that extra week for families to take hold of their lives. McGovern said power was lost at every school in the district, but rather than playing the schedule day-by-day, he said offering families another week before sending children to school gave some sort of solace to those whose lives were turned upside down by the storm.

administration staff came in from 9 a.m. until noon so people could have something in the morning, said McGovern. He said over the holiday weekend residents can use the facilities as a disaster relief center that can host up to 30 people. Brittany Willis, of Kingston Township, tried to keep her head up during the rough times, especially for her daughter, whos only 3 years old. With Smartphones, I can have her play games and keep her busy, said Willis.

will have four buildings at the location about 1,300 feet from the Dallas schools. One or two buildings will hold meter tubes, or the gas pipeline, depending on space availability; another will hold three control valves and will be smaller than the metering building; and another building will store communications equipment and a gas chromatograph, which separates other materials from the gas. In addition, Scott settled a dispute that confused zoning board members and residents in the past. The issue relates to which company, Chief or Transco, would control aspects of the operation on site. Scott said Transco will oversee the calibration of measuring instruments and Chief will handle the construction, operation and maintenance of the site. He said anything that happens at the site is Chiefs responsibility. He testified the four or five

Other residents asked Scott whether he could guarantee the safety of nearby residents of the facility and the nearly 3,000 students attending the Dallas schools. CHIEF

month construction period would consist of a maximum of about 10 vehicles traveling in and out of the area, and when the metering facility is in operation, a pick up truck stopping by the site once or twice daily would be the extent of traffic. Scott also said the company uses subcontractors for the construction process and sometimes during maintenance of the facility, when needed. Resident Diane Dreier asked Scott about the companys plans to stay in the area once the site is built and what kind of safety protocol Dallas residents could expect from a future owner of the site. Scott said the company plans to maintain the metering facility as long as natural gas is available in the Marcellus Shale, which he estimated to be be-

tween 40 and 50 years. Other residents asked Scott whether he could guarantee the safety of nearby residents of the facility and the nearly 3,000 students attending the Dallas schools. After several attempts, Scott admitted a fire or explosion at the site would be harmful to the public interest, but the company takes steps in ensuring those events would never be an issue. Scott was Chiefs final witness. In upcoming meetings, opposing counsel may offer witnesses to testify and after that process is finished, residents may also testify. After that is completed, Chief may offer a rebuttal case. If not, the zoning hearing board will have to make a decision on the matter.

The family lost power and water at its Mount Olivet Road home and used water from its swimming pool pool to flush the toilet and keep clean. They stopped by the Dallas Fire & Ambulance Station Monday to pick up some food and see their neighbors. Weve been going into town a lot, said Willis. We drive around to keep our phones and things charged. Terry Serafin, of Dallas Township, said between removing water from the familys basement by the bucket-full and trying to find a way to communicate with the outside world, the storm made their lives more stressful but helped them appreciate the luxuries they normally have. Instead of fiddling with electronic devices, the family has been playing games together and noticing the little things throughout their ordeal. We learned how to play the card game Hearts, and we played board games, said Serafin. And the stars (Sunday) night were beautiful.
