Traditional Liquors and Wines

Traditional Korean drinks are made chiefly from rice, sweet potatoes and other grains, usually along with kneaded wheat malt. They are classified according to purity, percentage of alcohol contained, whether or not distilled, and materials used. There are largely five types: yakju (refined pure liquor fermented from rice), soju (distilled liquor), takju (thick, unrefined liquor fermented from grains), fruit wines, and medicinal wines from various seeds and roots. Each type has dozens of varieties. The famous cheongju is a form of yakju and the popular makgeolli is pected to hold it out and receive a fill-up, drink it empty, and in considered takju. Acacia, maesil plums, Chinese quinces, cherries, pine fruits, and pomegranates are some popular ingredients in fruit wines. likewise fashion return it to the person who offered it to you. A milky liquor with low alcohol content, this traditional commoner's beverage is enjoyed not only by farmers and laborers, but by business people as well. It is served at drinking houses around universities, at festivals, picnic areas, or anywhere people might enjoy a mild drink with a fermented flavor.

It is a rule of courtesy for juniors to pour liquor for their seniors. The juniors have to keep paying attention not to leave a senior's glass empty. When a senior offers a junior a glass, the junior should receive it with two hands and drink with head turned aside, not facing the senior. It is also the custom to cup the right sleeve with the left hand when pouring a drink for a senior. In the past, Korean drinking houses used to prepare a special soup to cure the hangovers of customers who had drank the night before. This beef-bone broth fortified with dried outer cabbage leaves and clotted ox blood, called haejangguk, is still a morning-after favorite.

Soju
Comparable to vodka but less potent, soju is the most popular traditional Korean liquor among the general public. Soju was originally brewed from grains; today it is mass-produced mainly from sweet potatoes.

PAGNINILAY: Sunday, December 14, 2008, Third Sunday of Advent

Today we celebrate Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete means Rejoice! I rejoice heartily in the Lord, Isaiah tells us. In my God is the joy of my soul. Mary in todays response is even more specific: she rejoices because of what God the Father has done for her and how He has filled the hungry with good thingswith the very Word of God. God cares for the poor, indeed. He calls us to feed the hungry, but there are other kinds of hunger and poverty than physical hunger and financial poverty. There is spiritual poverty, which shows itself in the hunger for God. The materially poor often feel this poverty of spirit more readily than those who are materially comfortable, as can be seen in the vigorous devotional life of simple believers as compared with the individualism of comfortable religion. Nevertheless, every single human being is hungry for God, even if he or she doesnt realize it. We are made for love. In fact, we are made for a love of such endless dimensions that only God can satisfy this desire. As Saint Augustine so beautifully put it, You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You. To be poor in spirit is essential to the Eucharistic advent attitude of Christian life, waiting for the Lord in watchfulness and in joyful gratitude for all the great goods God bestows on us. God wants to prepare our hearts for true love: to make a way in our hearts for His coming in fullness.
He does this through the sacraments, through prayer, through Scripture, through the teaching authority of the Church. God wants to fill the hunger for Himself that He put in our hearts. He wants to fill us with His joy and to love us like a spouse in the great wedding-feast of the Lamb that will consummate all of history. In fact, this great feast of love already begins at each Eucharistic sacrifice. God wants to make us like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem, like a bride bedecked with her jewels. Today we rejoice in the faithful and life-giving love of God. May God prepare our hearts so that we can love as He loves! The Father gives us the Word made flesh in the Eucharist, by the power of their Holy Spirit of shared love, to satisfy our hearts hungry for loveso that we may live out faithful and fruitful love for others. CATHOLIC FAITH:
From the Catholic Encyclopedia The third Sunday of Advent, so called from the first word of the Introit at Mass (Gaudete, i.e. Rejoice). The season of Advent originated as a fast of forty days in preparation for Christmas, commencing on the day after the feast of St. Martin (12 November), whence it was often called "St. Martin's Lent"-- a name by which it was known as early as the fifth century. The introduction of the Advent fast cannot be placed much earlier, because there is no evidence of Christmas being kept on 25 December before the end of the fourth century (Duchesne, "Origines du culte chrtien", Paris, 1889), and the preparation for the feast could not have been of earlier date than the feast itself. In the ninth century, the duration of Advent was reduced to four weeks, the first allusion to the shortened season being in a letter of St. Nicholas I (858-867) to the Bulgarians, and by the twelfth century the fast had been replaced by simple abstinence. St. Gregory the Great was the first to draw up an Office for the Advent season, and the Gregorian Sacramentary is the earliest to provide Masses for the Sundays of Advent. In both Office and Mass provision is made for five Sundays, but by the tenth century four was the usual nurnber, though some churches of France observed five as late as the thirteenth century. Notwithstanding all these modifications, however, Advent still preserved most of the characteristics of a penitential seasons which made it a kind of counterpart to Lent, the middle (or third) Sunday corresponding with Laetare or Mid-Lent Sunday. On it, as on Laetare Sunday, the organ and flowers, forbidden during the rest of the season, were, permitted to be used; rose-coloured vestments were allowed instead of purple (or black, as formerly); the decon and subdeacon reassumed the dalmatic and tunicle at the chief Mass, and cardinals wore rose- colour instead of purple. All these distinguishing marks have continued in use, and are the present discipline of the Latin Church. Gaudete Sunday, therefore, makes a breaker like Laetare Sunday, about midway through a season which is otherwise of a penitential character, and signifies the nearness of the Lord's coming. Of the "stations" kept in Rome the four Sundays of Advent, that at the Vatican basilica is assigned to Gaudete, as being the most important and imposing of the four. In both Office and Mass throughout Advent continual reference is made to our Lord's second coming, and this is emphasized on the third Sunday by the additional signs of gladness permitted on that day. Gaudete Sunday is further marked by a new Invitatory, the Church no longer inviting the faithful to adore merely "The Lord who is to come", but calling upon them to worship and hail with joy "The Lord who is now nigh and close at hand". The Nocturn lessons from the Prophecy of Isaias describe the Lord's coming and the blessings that will result from it, and the antiphons at Vespers re-echo the prophetic promises. The joy of expectation is emphasized by the constant Alleluias, which occur in both Office and Mass throughout the entire season. In the Mass, the Introit "Gaudete in Domino temper" strikes the same note, and gives its name to the day. The Epistle again incites us to rejoicing, and bids us prepare to meet the coming Saviour with prayers and supplication and thanksgiving, whilst the Gospel, the words of St. John Baptist, warns us that the Lamb of God is even now in our midst, though we appear to know Him not. The spirit of the Oflice and Liturgy all through Advent is one of expectation and preparation for the Christmas feast as well as for the second coming of Christ, and the penitential exercises suitable to that spirit are thus on Gaudete Sunday suspended, as were, for a while in order to symbolize that joy and gladness in the Promised Redemption which should never be absent from the heart of the faithful. Karunungan:
Do not allow discouragement to become a part of your life! Its aimed at disarming you in your stand for receiving your healing or whatever else youre believing God for. At times, we can become weary in our walk of faith, especially if weve been going through a tough physical battle. We can become drained emotionally as our senses scream out day after day because of the hard cold facts of sickness and disease. We may have started out with a strong attitude and conviction of faith, but we can begin to falter if were not careful. After all, though we cannot see it, we need to remember that there is a spiritual battle raging all around us. If were not careful we can lose sight of this fact, which is very dangerous, as we begin to think the thoughts of failure and doom are ours alone. As I often state, the devil is after your faith, because he knows how powerful it can be. And this battle tactics are an attempt to convince you that healing and health are not for you. He is hoping that you will become discouraged and weary in the fight and begin to lose hope and lay down your shield of faith. When this happens, the first thing the most people do is get out of the Word, and generally they just stop reading all together. The next thing is they get out of fellowship with the Lord, they get so caught up with their circumstances (serpentances), they quit spending time in the Masters presence. When these things happen, their supply of divine life is cut off, and it will not long before they will come to the end of themselves. Drained feeling lifeless and at the end their rope. Much like a battery, we need to be charged with the divine flow of His life supply. We need to continue to get plugged in to the Master source and continue to be recharged, becoming full of His divine life power. Only then are equipped with the energy that it takes to continue the fight on into victory. Lets take a look at the word discourage. Websters dictionary says it means to deprive one of courage, hope or confidence. It also means to prevent or try to prevent by disapproving or raising objections or obstacles. Does this sound familiar? Have there been some obstacles arise in your life since you began your stand of faith in Gods Word for your healing? Know this: Spiritual battles can only be fought with spiritual weapons. Lets look at 2 Corinthians 10:3-5: For thought we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretention that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. I love the last part of that verse. try. When he sees something that doesnt look right he yells out in a commanding, authoritive voice, Halt, who goes there! You dont belong here, and he takes them into custody, not allowing them to enter. On the same line, we need to be careful what toughts we let into our minds, which thoughts we are meditating on and pondering. Only those that line up with the Word should be allowed in. This is why we need to take time each day to get into the Word of God and spend time in the presence of God through personal praise and worship, these are powerful weapos indeed! They keep us mindful of the inheritance that belongs to us and His love that assures us of His willingness to get them to us. In fact, in Ephesians 6:17 it calls the Word of God the sword of the Spirit. Actually, in the Greek language here, the text is talking about the Word of God that is being spoken. In Matthew chapter 4 we see Jesus using he spoken Word of God when the devil was tempting Him in the wilderness. Jesus did not answer him on His own, instead He spoke the Word, the established eternal truth of God, the refuse the devil. If Jesus lived that way when He was on the earth, then we must do it also. After all, He is our example of divine victory. This is why the enemy wants you to put down the healing scriptures and stop reading the Word all together. This is why he wants to discourage you, so that you will stop your times of devotions and fellowship with the Lord. Listen, Gods Word that is believed, received and acted upon will bring about the results that are in the Word. As you apply it, you need to know that its just a matter of time before your symptoms will begin to give away. They have to! And Almighty God established a blood covenant, and put His Word and very life on the line to back it up. So get back up on your faith. Get back into the fight and get back into the Word of God today. Dont give up on what belongs to you. Develop an I will not be denied attitude and get your healing scriptures out and begin to lay claim once again to your inheritance that was granted to you by the Lord Jesus Christ. Tell the devil to get out of your life and you just lift your hands up to the Lord and get back into praise and worship, making melody in your heart unto the Lord. After all, praise looks good on you! And get back into fellowship with your local body of believers where they can agree with you in prayer and support you. Please understand that your heavenly Father is not mad at you, He only wants the best for you. Hes waiting with open arms to take you on into victory. So what are you waiting for? Take it now, the victory is yours!

SANAYSAY atbp.
DISCO
Amie Sison
At tinulungan Niya ako. Paano? Todobigay. Hataw.

RP needs to step up protection for OFWs, says UN report

MANILA, Philippines - Although the United Nations (UN) was generally satisfied with the Philippine governments human rights report, the international organization raised concern over the welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). A report by the UN Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc) released on Wednesday on the occasion of Human Rights Day said in its concluding observation that OFWs remain vulnerable to various abuses in their destination countries. Despite efforts undertaken by the State party (Philippine government), OFWs continue to face discriminatory treatment and abuses," the committee wrote in its advance and unedited report. The report noted that women migrant workers, especially in the household service industry, often fall prey to employers who abuse them physically, psychologically and sexually. In its recommendation, the report said the Philippine government should improve existing services given to OFWs, strike more bilateral agreements with destination countries with high incidences of migrant worker abuse and provide legal assistance to OFWs and ensure that their rights are observed. The Ecosoc was also concerned that while the Philippines had plenty of laws, the number of prosecutions and convictions of traffickers was very low. In its report submitted to the Ecosoc last month in Geneva, Switzerland, the Philippine government claimed it has been able to ease the unemployment problem in the country by generating more jobs. Ellen Sana, executive director of the Center for Migrant Advocacy (CMA), welcomed the UN report and echoed concerns about the plight of more than eight million Filipinos overseas. Sana said that in April 2009, they would make another parallel report before the UN Migrant Workers' Committee when the Philippines will again present a report on their compliance with migrant workers rights. "This is not to embarrass the government but to make them more responsive," Sana said. Last November, CMA along with other human rights, labor workers, and education groups submitted a shadow report to the UN to counter the government report on the current situation in the country. The UN heard the Philippines report last November 11 and 12. The government failed to account that they considered overseas employment as a solution to the unemployment problem in the country," Sana asserted in an earlier interview. A total of 121 Filipinos leave the country every hour to look for greener pastures abroad, the CMA said. The Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA) has said OFWs deployment reached 1.116 million from January to October 2008, up by a robust 25.5% (+227,780) compared to the 888,339 OFWs deployed worldwide in the same period in 2007. Filipino missionary and teacher Dr. Emely Dicolen-Abagat recently published an inspirational book ``And God Smiled Back, about her life as a migrant worker, a community leader in the Filipino community in Seoul, and a mother to four children. Abagat said she has always dreamed of writing an inspirational book, but she nearly gave up on that dream because she was so preoccupied with other things in her life. But when she moved to Korea a few years ago, she started contributing articles to Sambayanan, a newsletter for the Filipino community. ``I started writing my prayers, realizations, reflections, fears and joys, and had them published in the newsletter. One day I found myself posting them on my blog and started to receive some encouraging comments. I was inspired to write more,'' Abagat said. Abagat found more time to reflect and write about her experiences when she was teaching at the Korean Missionary Society Formation House. ``I invited God to be with me as I revisited my past, my life and my experiences. I discovered how God continuously smiled back at me. Now I realized the beauty of my life,'' she said. In her book, Abagat writes not just about the happy experiences with her children, family and friends, but also struggles and painful experiences. Throughout these challenges, she continued to have a strong faith in God. She hopes people who read the book will be inspired and invite God into their lives. Philippine Ambassador to Korea Luis Cruz said Abagats book would provide guidance and hope for people who are searching for spiritual fulfillment. `In this journey we call life, we sometimes tend to forget the value of meditation, as we lose ourselves in the maze of living in the fast lane. `And God Smiled Back comes as a breath of fresh air because it serves as a trigger for reflection and soul searching,'' Cruz said. The book is available for sale at 10,000 won. Proceeds will go directly to the scholarship program of the Hyehwa-dong Filipino Catholic Community. For orders and inquiries, contact Abagat at 010-5160-2928 or emelyabagat@yahoo.com, or Edison Pinlac at 010-29063109 or edison_pinlac@yahoo.com cathy@koreatimes.co.kr
