Detailed instructions specific to your router are available in the OpenDNS website
itself. After I reconfigured my Linksys router to use the above 2 IP addresses, my
DNS problems just vanished! Other freebies that come with OpenDNS are phishing
filters and automatic URL correction. Even if your service providers DNS servers
are working fine, you can still use OpenDNS just for these two special
features. After performing this hack you will see a noticeable improvement in your
broadband speed.

Bsnl Broadband continues to grow as one the most popular broadband services in
India with high speed facilities of upto 2 mpbs. But a large number of users of
this service are vulnerable to hacker attacks because discovering and hacking the
vulnerable victims of this network is shockingly simple. If you are a Bsnl
Broadband user then immediately assess the security of your internet connection
and take appropriate steps to secure yourself.
First lets see how simple it is to get bsnl broadband usernames and passwords. For
this you shall need a ipscanner tool called Angry IP Scanner
Ok so lets begin...
Step 1 : Start Angry IP scanner and goto options > ports. Type in 80 in the first
ports textbox and click ok.Then goto options > options ; in the display section
select "only open ports" and click ok&save.
Now on the main screen put in the ip scan range as something 59.*.0.0 -
59.*.255.255 (for e.g. 59.95.2.3) and click the start button. And the list that
shall follow next are the victims. In this example we choose the range 59.95.0.0 -
59.95.255.255. You will be surprised at the number of victims you discover.
Step 2 : Pick the ip-address of any of them and open up your browser and type in
ht*p://59.*.*.* (the * should be replaced by the values from the ip you are using.
A box will popup asking for username and password. Enter the username : admin and
password : admin .There is a high chance that you will be able to login with that
username and password.
admin-admin is the default username and password that is set while manufacturing
the adsl modem devices.
Well each steps take less than 1 minute so getting username passwords wont take
even 2 minutes and is easier than sending a mail. And this exposes the weak
security of bsnl broadband users.
Most routers have an option where remote management can be disabled. In other
words, you can only connect to the configuration interface from the internal
network, not the WAN(Internet) side. You would definitely want to make sure remote
management is not active to protect yourself.
The problem is that the professionals at Bsnl are ignorant of such simplicity of
networking and unable to advise the users or guide them to take proper security
measures leaving their customers and themselves absolutely unsecure.
Now lets check a few more options related to this issue. A bsnl broadband modem
can be used in two modes. RFC Bridged mode and pppoe mode.
In the RFC Bridged mode the device behaves like a modem device that is attached to
your computer and you use some dialup software to dial into the isp through this
modem. This is PPPOE from the PC and the adsl device is a good modem. This mode is
safer as the username password are on your pc and nothing is on the modem.
In the PPPOE mode the adsl device becomes a router - a distinct network device
with many features enabled. In this mode the username password is stored in the
modem which will dial to the isp and establish the internet connectivity. The
computers will just connect to this router who would be their primary gateway. Now
this is the mode where the risk exists.
If remote administration is enabled the remote users from the internet can login
to this modems administration panel. Now the main problem is the default admin
username-password which most users dont change due to ignorance. "admin-admin" is
pair that works in most cases giving you full access to the modems internals. What
follows next is simple as drinking a glass of orange juice.
Many users install firewalls and think they are safe, but they fail to understand
that the firewall protects their PC not the "router" since the topology is
like(PC) -> router -> internet
i f you are using a BroadBand connection at your home and using Windows Xp as your
Operating System, and you feel that your BroadBand speed is a bit less, then in
that case you have the option to increase your Broadband speed upto 20%.
Tip 1: One of the major problems with BSNL Dataone Broadband connection is the DNS
servers they provide by default. Most of the time they are very slow and sometimes
they fail to respond. I noticed that I am starting to spend a significant amount
of time in DNS resolution with Dataone connection, often it is larger than the
time it takes to actually get the reponse. Here is a simple solution to
significantly speed up your DNS resolution.
Open up the network connection profile and edit TCP/IP settings. In the DNS server
address fields, specify the following DNS server addresses: 208.67.222.222 and
208.67.220.220
Disconnect the connection and then connect again. You are done.
This specifies third party DNS servers which are significantly faster than BSNL
Dataone's DNS servers.
Tip 2: Firefox users can use FlashBlock extension to prevent downloading of Flash
content by default, thereby significantly speeding up browsing experience. You can
click on the placeholder icon to display the original Flash content any time. This
is more of a passive tip in that reduces data usage to improve your overall
experience.
Tip 3: You can try to increase your broadband bandwidth tweaking the TCP/IP
parameters. The process is simplified by using TCPOptimizer, a free tool. It
helped me, your mileage may vary.
How to easily speed up your BSNL BroadBand Connection
I just found this article which discusses 3 important tips to significantly speed
up your internet access through BSNL Dataone broadband connection / most other
BroadBand connections like Reliance or Tata Indicom or Sify Broadband .
Tip 1: One of the major problems with BSNL Dataone Broadband connection is the DNS
servers they provide by default. Most of the time they are very slow and sometimes

Also, there's nice little tweak for XP. Microsoft reserve 20% of your available
bandwidth for their own purposes. This also affects your Broadband peformance. You
can get back this 20% as follows:
"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth
of a connection, but you can use this
setting to override the default."
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO.
This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.
I have tested the above procedure on Windows 2000 , XP Pro , XP SP-1 & XP SP-2
only. But not tested other o/s.
How can TO increase my broadband connection speed in Windows XP/2003?
This tip is designed for increased BROADBAND speed in Windows XP while using
standard Network Interface cards (NIC) that are connected to ADSL modems, or when
using any directly-connected USB ADSL modem.
1. Open the System Information tool by running MSINFO32.EXE from the Run command.
2. Expand System Summary > Hardware Resources > IRQs.
3. Look for the listing made for your NIC (in my case - a Intel PRO/100+
Management Adapter). Note the IRQ next to the specified line (in my case - IRQ21).
In case of USB modems you will first need to find the right USB device used by
your modem. Follow these steps:
1. Open the Device Manager tool by running DEVMGMT.MSC from the Run command (or by
right-clicking My Computer > Hardware tab > Device Manager button).
2. Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and expand it.
3. Right-click the USB Root Hub and select Properties. Note that you might need to
do so for all listed USB Root hubs (if there are more than one) in order to find
the right one.
4. In the Power tab, look for your USB ADSL modem.
5. In the Resources tab look for the assigned IRQ (in this case - IRQ21).
6. This is the IRQ we're looking for.
A/DSL modems, however there are reports that this tweak also does good for regular
NICs. In any case, it won't harm your system, so why not try it yourself and let
me know what you find.
4 Ways to Increase Your Internet Broadband Connection Speed
ADVERTISEMENTS
There are many occasions when you will get into internet connection problems and
will not be able to get online and handle your normal online business, this is the
stage when you need to try out some of these tweaks for the respective
connections. If you are using airtel 8mbps connection then you wont need these
tweaks because its one of the best broadband service provider in India.
First of all check out your current broadband speed and note it down and then
apply the following tweaks one by one :
1. Reducing your Web Cache Space : You need to reduce your web cache space to
the minimum because this way your browser does not need to search much in the
temporary files. For this you need to do the following :
Click Start > Click on Control Panel > Double Click on Internet Options >
Click on Setting option under the Browsing History[Delete temporary files,
history, cookies, saved passwords & web information].
Internet Properties Control Panel
Now reduce the cache size to the minimum recommended disk space which is
normally 50Mb disk space. This way your internet connection speed will increase to
some extent.
Temporary Internet Files
2. Speed Up your Web Pages by blocking multimedia & Turning off Graphics: This
is a very important tweak which can help you increase your broadband speed by many
times. Here are the steps :
Click on Start > Click on Control Panel > Double Click on Internet Options >
Click on Settings under Advanced Menu > Deselect some of the options which you
dont need generally while browsing example removing Show pictures if you normaly
use internet connection for check out your emails etc.
Advanced Internet Options
Generally you need to disable Images, sounds, animations etc in order to
increase your internet speed because text wont take much time to load up in a slow
connection.
3. Send Bulk emails using distribution lists : If you are looking to send a
email to multiple reciptants then its time for you to signup for email
distributions by creating mailing lists, this way you can get your work sorted
even if you are on a very slow internet connection.
4. FasterFox Firefox AddonUse Fasterfox : A firefox Add-On which can increase
your browser performance and network tweak to increase your browsing speed. The
Add-on automaticaly loads up silently all the links open when there is idle
bandwidth and help you to save up some loading time with a inbuilt pop-up blocker
to block unwanted pop-ups
Dont forget to read these tips for increasing your internet browsing speed by 4
times which is related to your browser settings.
