Angel Chen British Literature 4/8/2011 Who is Beowulf? ENTJ?

Based on the Myers-Briggs Personality analysis, ENTJ represents extraversion, intuition, thinking, and judgment which are personality traits. A person who is described as ENTJ finds themselves comfortable in public, takes their vision of future over current reality, puts their logic in front of their feeling or desire, and plans ahead for their predictions. In the story Beowulf, the main character totally reflected ENTJ through his leadership, courage, and self-rationales. Starting from the beginning of the story, Beowulf shows his extrovert personality in his great leadership. He spoke confidently and comfortably in public while responding to Wulfgar as a leader of his army when they arrived at Denmark. Him the sturdy-in-war bespake with words, proud earl of the Weders answer made, hardy neath helmet:Hygelacs, we, fellows at board; I am Beowulf named. I am seeking to say to the son of Healfdene this mission of mine, to thy master-lord, the doughty prince, if he deign at all grace that we greet him, the good one, now. (Ch 5) Without his extrovert trait, Beowulf could not give such a persuasive response to Wulfgar, impressing Wulfgar by his leadership. Also, we can tell Beowulf is

extroverted by him staying at the banquet hall with his men to cheer up their spirit before taking their journey to kill Grendel as a leader. The intuition feature of Beowulf can be represented through his courage of setting off to Dane, wanting to defeat Grendel despite of all the failure that had done by Hrothgars outstanding soldiers. A stout wave-walker he bade make ready. Yon battle-king, said he, far oer the swan-road he fain would seek, the noble monarch who needed men!(Ch3) Although knowing how much disaster Grendel had brought to Dane, as an intuitive person, Beowulf made up his decision to destroy Grendel right away without considering the danger and risks in reality when he got the news about need of aid from Hygalac. In addition, Beowulf can be viewed as a model of thinking men when we look at the rational side of Beowulf. More I hear, that the monster dire, in his wanton mood, of weapons recks not; hence shall I scornso Hygelac stay, king of my kindred, kind to me! brand or buckler to bear in the fight, gold-colored targe: but with gripe alone must I front the fiend and fight for life, foe against foe. Then faith be his in the doom of the Lord whom death shall take. (Ch 6). Even when Beowulf was fighting with Grendel, he still put his logic of playing a fair game in front of the ccurgency of winning. Moreover, at the end of the story, when Beowulf was having his last breath, he emphasized how he had done everything abided by the his principle, allowing him

to die without fear. At home I bided what fate might come, and I cared for mine own; feuds I sought not, nor falsely swore ever on oath. For all these things, though fatally wounded, fain am I! From the Ruler-of-Man no wrath shall seize me, when life from my frame must flee away, for killing of kinsmen! (Ch 35) With the thinking character, it became much easier for Beowulf to be self-controlled, knowing his own duty and not interfering with others troubles just for the impulse of a warrior, and owns a life without regrets. In conclusion, there is no other type of personalities that can describe Beowulf better than ENTJ. The ENTJ traits make Beowulf into a great leader full of courage and self-rationales. Even though he died at the end after killing the dragon, his characters and triumph had man him in to a super hero in both Geatland and Denmark.
