Purpose:

To inform my classmates about the causes, symptoms and complications of diabetes.

Introduction: This speech will cover the different types of diabetes, its causes, treatment for it, and some complications associated with this disease. There are 23.6 million people in the United States, or 7.8% of the population, who have diabetes. Each year there are18.8 million people diagnosed with diabetes. There are as many as 7.0 million people that have not been diagnosed. 79 million other are prediabetic. In 2010, there were new cases are of diabetes in people ages of 20 years and older. It was approxiatemately 1.9 million. Within these age groups there are more men diagnosed with the disease than women. With in race/ethnic groups, there are more African Americans that are diagnosed with diabetes that in others.

Body: Main Point I: What is Diabetes? A: Definition 1. A disease in which the body either does not produce, or does not properly use insulin B: What is Insulin? 1. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body change food into energy. Transition: State that anyone can develop Diabetes Main Point II: There are different types of diabetes. A: Type I 1. The body can not produce insulin, so the sugar from food builds up on the blood stream. B: Type II 1. The body can not produce enough insulin. C: Gestational 1. This is a rare type of diabetes because it is only experienced temporarily during pregnancy. Transition: Just state that anyone can get diabetes. Main Point III: There are different signs and symptoms of diabetes. A: Type I (Evidence and parenthetical sourcing should be included in substructure) 1. Frequent urination 2. Unusual thirst 3. Extreme Hunger 4. Weight loss 5. Fatigue or Irritability B: Type II 1. All the symptoms from Type I 2. Frequent infections 3. Blurred vision 4. Slow to heal 5. Tingling or numbness in hands/feet

6. Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections C: Gestational 1. Transition: (optional, but suggested) Conclusion: Inconclusion, Diabetes
