Andrew Cheng British Literature 9/2/11 Beowulf Personality Analysis Anonymous Beowulf thoroughly showed the ENT personality

type of Beowulf through his strong and responsible feeling for a group, imagination of himself as a victor, and his determination. ENT personality type stands for extraversion, intuition, and thinking. In other words, he is generally open, social, ambitious, and determined. Throughout this piece of writing, he reinforced all the characteristics above through his actions and speeches. In addition, his thoughts and ways of thinking were truly shown both in and out of his fights. Beowulf is an extrovert. People that are extrovert tend to energize other people and have a strong feeling for a group. In the story BEOWULF spake, bairn of Ecgtheow: Sorrow not, sage! It beseems us better friends to avenge than fruitlessly mourn them. Each of us all must his end abide in the ways of the world; so win who may glory ere death!(21) At this moment, when most of his men began to mourn about letting Grendels mom leaves, but Beowulf contrarily cheered and pumped them up. His strong feeling for a group clearly shows the extraversion personality in him.

As a person with an intuition personality type, Beowulf thinks about victories before even getting into an actual fight. Intuition personality type people think more about their future than the past, they work with symbols or abstract theories. In one of Beowulfs speeches, he said ME thus often the evil monsters thronging threatened. With thrust of my sword, the darling, I dealt them due return! Nowise had they bliss from their booty then to devour their victim, vengeful

creatures, seated to banquet at bottom of sea; but at break of day, by my brand sore hurt, on the edge of ocean up they lay, put to sleep by the sword. (9) As Beowulf spoke about his victory after killing nine sea monsters, his ambition and imagination of him as a victor slowly became clear and more noticeable. Without even having an idea of what Grendel is like, and without knowing what he is about to face, his confidence, his ambition and simply his thoughts for the future evidently reflected that he has an intuition personality type.

Beowulf, as a person, is determined especially after making decisions through his logical sense. Beowulfs personality matches the thinking personality in an exact manner. People with thinking personality tend to be impersonal, tend decide through logic, and tend to stay consistent. During the first fight against Grendel, the account is as follows Then bethought him the hardy Hygelac-than of his boast at evening: up he bounded, grasped firm his foe, whose fingers cracked. (11) As Beowulf was fighting he remembered the promise he had made, which was to beat Grendel, so he lept up and grabbed Grendel tighter. He was extremely determined in this act. Before he got into this fight he knew was going to face a monster, he figured that it was a fight that he was willing to be involved, and after logically thinking about it all, he was determined to beat Grendel. His personality of thinking through actions prior to the actual attempts, truly showed his thinking personality type. Beowulf has a personality type of ENTJ. Every single detail throughout the book has proven him to be an extrovert, an intuitive, and a thoughtful person. Many people around, whom you may not notice, could have similar personalities as Beowulf, such as someone who cares a lot for their group and is determined as a person. Look out for them, because they may be ones hero someday, like Beowulf.
