Adelante I can be taken in lieu of Intermediate Spanish I. While students will often be working with the same materials as students in Intermediate, Adelante is especially targeted toward students who have a solid preparation in Spanish and a strong motivation to further expand their knowledge of the language and its cultures. It also provides excellent preparation for study abroad. Adelante I builds on previously acquired language skills helps prepare students to interact with native speakers of Spanish. Emphasis is on vocabulary expansion, accuracy of expression, and interactive language use. Short literary and cultural readings will provide authentic insight into the Hispanic world. Students will have the opportunity to work with videos, films, the internet and other multimedia. Prerequisite: Elementary Spanish or equivalent.
COURSE OBJECTIVES This course focuses on enhancing your ability to communicate in Spanish by helping you to master several important language functions, or actions/ideas that you can express with the language. These functions will enable you to create, participate in conversations, ask and answer questions and manage everyday topics and social situations. This semester's functions include: describing and comparing people; narrating in the present and past; reacting to events and situations, making recommendations and expressing opinions. Although we touch lightly on these topics this semester, next semester you will learn to express likes and dislikes, hypothesize and talk about the future. We will review the major grammar points needed to express these functions. Most of the grammar, however, will be familiar to you so that you will be able to express yourself communicatively. IMPORTANT NOTE: This syllabus will CHANGE and other material will be assigned DURING class. Therefore, if you miss class, consult a classmate to find out if any additional homework has been assigned before coming to the next class. It is essential that you have the contact information for a few other class members. It is imperative that you read all emails from your professor and you find out what happened and was announced in class on any day that you missed. Remember: you are responsible for handing in work on time, and for being prepared for quizzes, regardless of whether you miss class or not. LANGUAGE EXCHANGE: For the first time ever, Adelante students will be partnering with students from the Universidad Catlica Andrs Bello (UCAB) in Venezuela. The details are still being worked out and therefore due dates are not on the syllabus yet. You will be required to participate in 2 Skype language exchanges (half in English and half in Spanish) outside of class. You will also prepare brief resmenes as part of these assignments.
COURSE CONTENTS 1. Oral Comprehension / Speaking / Culture: The goal of this course is two-fold: to teach in Spanish and to engage all students in daily opportunities for communicating in Spanish, such as in groups and individually. Oral communication skills and class participation / preparation are significant components of the course and will be evaluated regularly. Students will also
1 RL115 Fall 2011 syllabus

perform oral presentations on various topics. Videos and other authentic listening materials, featuring Spanish-speaking people from Spain, Latin America and the United States, will increase your understanding of spoken Spanish and add to your appreciation of contemporary Hispanic culture. 2. Reading / Writing / Culture: We will read and discuss poems, essays and/or short stories from The Course Pack and Lecturas literarias, with the goal of expanding your awareness of Hispanic culture, history, current events, and politics. You will also develop reading comprehension strategies, and write a number of essays, both in and out of class. Writing emphasis will be on learning ways to create more complex and interesting sentences. This semester you will write 3 compositions outside of class. The due dates for the compositions are as follows: Comp. 1, Oct. 12; Comp. 2, Oct. 28; Comp. 3, Nov. 18. Writing emphasis will be on learning ways to create more complex and interesting sentences. Writing topics will be emailed and posted on http://aliburk.wordpress.com/adelante/ about a week before the compositions are due. Whether written on a computer or by hand, please double space any prose (this includes workbook assignments that you are asked to write out on separate sheets of paper). Seeking help on written work without my permission is not allowed; this includes using tutors for help on these assignments. Using a dictionary is fine, but use of an online translator will be considered a violation of the university policy on Academic Integrity. See BC Academic Honesty policy on the RL 115 Web Page link to http://www.bc.edu/offices/stserv/academic/resources/policy.html#integrity 3. Puntos clave / Laboratory: In each chapter we will study and practice new vocabulary and key grammatical structures (Puntos clave) needed to perform the major language functions described above under "Course Objectives." Regular assignments from the Manual (workbook) accompany each lesson and will be due on indicated days. I may also choose to check these activities on a more regular basis and reserve the right to give unannounced quizzes on any material that the syllabus asks you to study before class. Workbooks and Labs must be self-corrected in contrasting color ink (answers are at the back of the Manual) and will be checked when indicated on the syllabus. Copying answers from the back of the Manual without honestly doing the work will be considered a violation of the university policy on Academic Integrity. Please staple all workbook pages before handing them in to me. Note: In all activities, spelling, accents, capitalization, punctuation, etc. count. ***Exercises from Punto y aparte may also be assigned and collected. Please write any exercises assigned from Punto y aparte, Lecturas literarias, and The Course Pack on loose-leaf paper. Please write any exercises in the Grammar Supplement in the book itself. Most of the Manual material will also be written in the workbook however a few activities call for you to write out sections on a separate piece of paper that will be stapled to your workbook pages. To do the workbook/lab please follow these instructions: Complete the activities Check answers against answer key in the back of the workbook, correct in another colored ink by crossing out the incorrect answer and writing in the correct one. Staple the workbook chapter pages in numerical order. Unstapled pages will not be accepted.

To complete the LISTENING SECTION (Prctica oral) of the Manual, log onto Blackboard (http://cms.bc.edu). Select the Listen Online link and then the appropriate chapter from the list on the next page. You will then see the individual activities for that chapter. Click on the link once to play it. If that does not work for you, follow these instructions: Windows/Linux users need to right-click on each link and save it to your desktop; Mac users need to click on the link, holding the mouse down until you see the menu that gives you the option to save the file, again to the desktop (or you can click on it while holding the Control button). From your desktop, you can play each file as an MP3 in your favorite player. The answers to most of the activities are in the back of the Manual, and follow the answers to the Prctica escrita. If you have problems accessing any of the material, let your instructor know immediately (e-mail is best); access issues are not a valid reason for not completing the assignment on time. ONLINE AUDIO PROGRAMS Use of online audio programs is restricted to Boston College students officially enrolled in Boston College courses in which these programs have been adopted as curricular material. All online audio programs may be accessed 24 hours/day, 7 days/week from any computer connected to the Boston College Network via the Blackboard authenticated Course Management system. For those who prefer to listen in person or who may be having technical difficulties, the Language Lab is located in Lyons 313, 552-8474. http://www.bc.edu/schools/cas/language/

For those who may be having technical difficulties, the Language Lab is located in Lyons 313, 552-8474. http://www.bc.edu/langlab. You may go to the Lab and do the activities on one of the computers there. Language Lab Hours: M-TH 8 a.m.-10 p.m. F 8 a.m.-5 p.m. SAT Closed SUN 1 p.m.-9 p.m.

4. Extra Help: I am available during office to help clarify difficult concepts. In addition, the Connors Family Learning Center (CFLC) provides free tutoring in Intermediate Spanish. CFLC is located on the second floor of the ONeill Library. If you need extra practice or are experiencing difficulty, speak with your instructor and make use of the CFL services. 5. The CASA HISPANOHABLANTE: (Vout Hall) offers many opportunities for language practice and cultural enrichment. You will receive e-mails regarding the Center's activities, so be sure to participate in them. 6. Distribution of Grades: * 7-8 short quizzes (lowest one dropped) * Midterm Exam Final Exam ** Oral Communication Skills ** Class work/Attendance Daily Homework *** Written Work (3 essays) *** Manual (workbook/lab manual) Oral Presentations 2 Skype based Language Exchange with UCAB student * NO MAKEUPS - Department policy (even in the case of excused absences) ** The Department permits three personal/sick days. Additional absences lower the overall class grade 1 point per absence (e.g., if your final course average is a 90/A- and you have five absences, then your overall grade will be dropped by 2 points and you will receive an 88/B+ for the course). See the Boston Colleges Academic Policies and Procedures (http://www.bc.edu/offices/stserv/academic/resources/policy.html#attendance). Excessive absences, even when officially excused, may result in failure. Additionally, the use of cell phones, mp3 players, or other electronic devices during class is prohibited; any use of cell phones during class, including for text messaging purposes, will affect a student's class participation grade. *** Daily homework assignments will only be accepted on the due dates indicated on the syllabus and are to be completed before class. Written assignments (essays & workbooks) are to be turned in DURING class on the days indicated on the syllabus or by me in class (please bring a hard copy of essays to class--do not e-mail them). No late work (essays) will be accepted without prior written approval from the instructor given at least 48 hours in advance (permission granted via email is acceptable). No credit will be given for late, daily homework. See the university policy at

7. Final Exam: There will be a 2 hour Final Exam. NOTE: THIS COURSE HAS A DEPARTMENTAL FINAL ON: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17, from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. 8. Films: During this semester there will be three films in Spanish that all students will watch. They will be available at the Language Lab (Lyons 313) on reserve and some may be available in the ONeill Media Center as well as video rental servise. Students will watch the first film, El laberinto del fauno directed by Guillermo del Toro between Sept. 28 and Oct. 4. Students will watch the second, Habana blues directed by Benito Zambrano between October 19 and

October 27 and the third, La misma luna directed by Patricia Riggen, between November 11 and November 17. Film viewing is mandatory; you will prepare a ficha topic and a composition about each film.
9. Americans with Disabilities Act. If you have a disability and will be requesting accommodations for this course, you are encouraged to register at the beginning of the semester with Kathy Duggan (Kathleen.duggan@bc.edu), Associate Director, Academic Support Services, the Connors Family Learning Center (learning disabilities and ADHD) or Suzy

RL115 Fall 2011 syllabus

Conway (Suzy.conway@bc.edu), Assistant Dean for Students with Disabilities (medical, physical, psychological, and temporary disabilities). Advance notice (one week prior to the first written quiz) and appropriate documentation (a letter outlining your accommodation needs from one of the above offices) are required for accommodations. *** Learning another language takes ongoing dedication and effort. In order to begin to master the speaking, writing, and comprehension of a language, as well as to gain an understanding of the culture(s) from which it comes, students are expected to complete the assignments given on a daily basis, rather than trying to catch up at any given point during the semester. The high academic standards of Boston College require that most students achieve a minimum proficiency level of intermediate in another language. Students enrolled in Adelante should expect to spend at least 2 hours preparing for each 50-minute class session; some may need to spend more time than that in order to keep up with the course work. In computing grades the following numerical equivalents for the twelve letter grades will be used: A AB+ B 4.00 (94-100) 3.67 (90-93) 3.33 (87-89) 3.00 (84-86) BC+ C C2.67 (80-83) 2.33 (77-79) 2.00 (74-76) 1.67 (70-73) D+ D DF 1.33 (67-69) 1.00 (64-66) .67(60-63) .00 (below 60)

SYLLABUS Note: in the first two weeks of class I will give a brief overview of the language functions we will practice throughout the year, most of which will probably not be new to you. You are not expected to produce these accurately at this point, but rather simply to participate on whatever level you can. We will go over all "puntos clave" in greater detail as the course progresses, and you will gradually become responsible for knowing this material. Please also note that not all activities are scheduled on the syllabus. See #2 above. All homework and assignments are to be completed by the class date listed on the syllabus, and when collected will be handed in during class.
