Manali: One person was killed and at least seven others are feared to have been washed away in a cloudburstnear Himachal Pradesh's Manali town, an official said here on Thursday. The cloudburst occurred at around 12.30 am on Wednesday in upper Manali, about 18 km from here that also left twenty-two labourers injured, Sub-divisional Magistrate Balbir Thakur said. One body has been recovered so far, while the remaining seven are still missing in the tragedy, Deputy Commissioner, Kullu B N Nanta said, adding that all the victims were construction workers engaged in the ongoing Rohtang Tunnel project. Nearly 130 labourers were living in as many 30 to 35 temporary houses, out of which 22 managed to survive with minor injuries, he said. Massive search operations have been launched and an alert has been sounded up to the nearby Larji Dam to search the missing labourers, Nanta said. The accident happened just after they returned from work to their base camps in Dhundi. Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister directed the Deputy Commissioner, Kullu to rush the spot immediately after receiving the information alongwith a team of officers and doctors to supervise the relief and rescue operation. He further directed that adequate relief be provided to the victims of this cloud burst and search operation for the missing persons be intensified. Shimla, Aug 8 (PTI) A cloudburst struck in Chopal area of Shimla district while heavy monsoon rains set normal life out of gear in Kangra, Mandi and Chamba districts of Himachal Pradesh and caused sharp fall in night temperature in some areas. The incessant heavy rains caused flash floods in the Churah and the Bhattiyat sub-division of Chamba district, damaging public and private property and crops worth about Rs 5 crore. The local MLA, who visited the affected areas said that rains caused massive landslides at numerous places and incidents of sinking of land were also reported by residents at some places. Meanwhile, reports of massive landslides triggered due to heavy rains endangered some houses in Lodergarh in Bhattiyat sub-division and three families had be evacuated. A cloudburst occurred at Kupwari under Chopal sub division in Shimla district damaging property worth over Rs 1 crore. The Trahan Khud was flooded due to heavy rains, damaging property and crops, Naib Tehsildar M K Sharma said. The cloud burst washed away four water mills [Gharats] and damaged 25 houses and damaged the electric transformer, he added. Widespread Torrential rain lashed several parts of Kangra and Mandi districts causing a sharp fall of eight degree in minimum temperature which plummeted to 13.4 degree in Dharamshala. Twenty-six bodies have so far been retrieved while seventeen persons are missing, Deputy Commissioner, Kullu, R D Nazeen said in Shimla. Seventeen bodies were retrieved from Kangri Nallah, one from Nehru Khud, three from Bhang, two from Manali and three from Solang Nallah, he said. Fifteen persons were injured in the incident, he said adding they have been admitted to a hospital in Manali. The incident occurred at 11.40 pm last night.

The victims were labourers from Jharkhand and Nepal engaged in construction of Rohtang tunnel project being executed by the Border Roads Organisation. The labourers, including a woman and three children, were either washed away or buried under the boulders and debris being carried by the swollen Kingri Nallah, 22 km from Manali. Relief and rescue operations were on in full swing. Over 150 jawans of the ITBP, police, homeguards and BRO were combing the entire area to search for remaining bodies. The district administration has provided ration, clothing, utensils, blankets and other commodities to the affected labourers and a temporary rehabilitation centre has been created in a local senior secondary school for the marooned labourers. Chief Minister Vir Bhadra Singh has flown to Manali by helicopter to take stock of the situation.
