2392-10 Course Outline 3-day

Three-day Electrical Testing and Certification Course

Course Aims
1. This qualification is aimed at practising electricians who have not carried out inspection and testing since qualifying or who require some update training before going on to achieve the City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations (2391-10). It is also suitable for those with limited experience of inspection and testing of electrical installations, such as those: a. Entering the industry from other engineering disciplines b. Working in allied trades. 3. This qualification prepares candidates for the initial verification of electrical installation work. Combined with suitable on-site experience, it would prepare candidates to go on to achieve the City & Guilds level 3 Certificate in inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations (2391-10).

2.

Course Topics
Refresher on the 17 Edition wiring regulations (BS7671). Preparation for initial inspection and testing. Inspecting, testing and certifying, using IEE Guidance Note 3. Hands-on practical work with test equipment. Practising filling in the main standard certificates, forms and schedules.
th

Assessments
1. Component 101, Knowledge of Fundamental Initial Verification (online multiple choice test, closed-book, 50 questions, 100 minutes). 2. Component 102, Practical Application of the Initial Verification (2-hour practical assessment). The candidate must pass each assessment in order to gain the 2392-10 qualification.

Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements. However, candidates must have the potential and opportunity to successfully gain the qualification. They should have basic knowledge and understanding of electrical science and principles and experience of electrical installation work either within the electrical contracting industry or an allied trade.

Course Structure
The course comprises three parts: Preparation for initial inspection and testing; Inspection; and Testing, as detailed below.

Preparation for Initial Inspection and Testing

The candidate will demonstrate knowledge of:

Requirements for Initial Verification Information required to correctly conduct the initial inspection and testing of an installation Statutory and non-statutory requirements and relevant guidance materials which apply to the activity of inspecting and testing of electrical installations The need to comply with statutory and non-statutory requirements, guidance material for particular locations and environments in which electrical installations are installed

Essential and optional information to be contained on the Electrical Installation Certificate and Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate and how the information is recorded.

Inspection
The candidate will:

State the human senses that may need to be employed during the Initial Verification of an installation Refer to and select the items to be checked during the inspection process for given systems and locations State the requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations for safe inspection and testing in terms of those carrying out the work and those using the installation and the building during the inspection and testing.

Testing
For each topic below, the candidate will: Instruments State the need for instruments to be regularly checked and the need for compliance with the requirements of BS 7671 (current edition) and HSE Guidance Note GS 38. List the correct instruments, functions and appropriate scale(s) to carry out each test and explain the reasons for each choice. Sequence State the recommended sequence of tests covered by this unit and the reasons for that sequence Protective Conductors State the requirements which need to be considered for protective conductors in terms of:

circuit protective conductors Describe the need for, and methods of, verifying the continuity of protective conductors and the interpretation of results State the relationship between conductor length, cross sectional area (csa) and resistance State the effect of temperature on conductor resistance. Ring Final Circuits State the effect on conductor resistance when cables are connected in parallel. Describe the need for, and the method of verifying the continuity of, ring final circuit conductors and the interpretation of results State the relationship between conductor length and conductor resistance. Insulation Resistance Explain, by example, the effect on insulation resistance of

earthing conductors main protective bonding conductors supplementary equipotential bonding conductors

variation in cable length State the difference between measurements taken for insulation resistance and conductor resistance, and the order of magnitude that would be expected in each case State the preconditions required for the performance of insulation resistance testing in terms of

cables connected in parallel

client consultation safety procedures and notices

State the precautions to be taken before testing insulation resistance in terms of

isolation of circuits and equipment

Complaints and Appeals

Any complaint or appeal should be made in the first instance direct to the Trans-Euro employee involved. It should be escalated to the assessor or internal verifier/quality assurance coordinator if satisfaction is not obtained. City & Guilds will not accept complaints or appeals made directly to them unless this process has been exhausted. The full company Appeals Policy is available on request from the Centre Secretary.

To obtain independent, informal advice before escalating to C&G HQ, our City & Guilds External Verifier contact details are: Tony Massey email: tony.massey@tesco.net phone: 01480 890 538

Disclaimer
Achieving the full C&G 2382-10 qualification does not provide any guarantee of workmanship, performance, quality or status of the candidate during future endeavours such as plying his/her trade, applying for membership/enrolment of trade bodies/institutions, or for job seeking etc

Data Protection
Any personal information Trans-Euro holds will only be used in the context of the business we conduct with the candidate. This information comprises the candidates name, date of birth, sex, employer and contact details. The formal, detailed, Trans-Euro Data Protection Policy statement is available on request, held by the Company Secretary.

Pre-Course Study and Reference Books

It would be of benefit to each delegate to obtain a book on Inspection & Testing in advance, either NICEIC "Inspection, Testing & Certification" or IEE Guidance Note 3, and start using it, reading it, memorising the sequence of tests and learning to use it as a reference book. If the delegate applies to the NICEIC to join as a Domestic Installer, NICEIC will send a pack of documents, including relevant publications as part of the "welcome pack". It is essential that delegates are familiar with the different types of earthing system likely to be encountered (TN-C-S, TT and TN-S). They should also remind themselves of earth fault loop impedance testing, insulation resistance testing, and testing final circuits generally, especially ring final circuits.
