Ryan Jay Cabreros BSCS III-A Consequences Utilitarianism is an ethical theory holding that the proper course of action

is the one that maximizes the overall "good" of the society. It is thus a form of consequentialism, meaning that the moral worth of an action is determined by its resulting outcome. The most influential contributors to this theory are considered to be Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. Utilitarianism was described by Bentham as "the greatest happiness or greatest felicity principle". Utilitarianism can be characterized as a quantitative and reductionist approach to ethics. It is a type of naturalism. It can be contrasted with deontological ethics (which do not regard the consequences of an act as a determinant of its moral worth), pragmatic ethics, and virtue ethics (which focuses on character), as well as with other varieties of consequentialism. Utilitarianism in ethics, the theory that the rightness or wrongness of an action is determined by its usefulness in bringing about the most happiness of all those affected by it. Utilitarianism is a form of consequentialism, which advocates that those actions are right which bring about the best overall. Jeremy Bentham Identifying good consequences with pleasure, this is measured in terms of intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity, and extent. In almost two months of having class in Philo 1 I have learn that utilitarianism would be an unfair judgment for a person who in the first place do not have the agenda to do such actions and unintentional consequence, it would be unfair for a person to be labeled as the primary mischief of such action. As being stated by our

instructor, even if the intention is being done well without the expected terrible consequence. In this manner the primary cause of the consequence would be the person. I have learned that it would be an unfair judgment but as we go on with the lesson there is a theory that contradict thus theory and that theory is the theory of intuition. The theory that truth or certain truths are known by intuition rather than reason, an external objects of perception are immediately known to be real by intuition. The theory that ethical principles are known to be valid through intuition. Intuition is the theory contradicting the theory of utilitarianism. It has been explained by our instructor that the guilt of the consequence is not in the person rather it is between the actions and consequence. In the context of intuition it would be compared as an unexpected contingency or coincident. Primarily, the intention of the person is only for the betterment of the society and probably for himself. The guilt will ease unleash from the person, and as we had elaborative discussion I came to realize that intuitionism could be applied in defending a crime that has been done unintentional but the main fact that it is still a theory and not yet proven. In this manner it is better to be wiser and more careful in things that we are doing so that we will not suffer an awful consequence that might probably do. With all care of all the actions we take, we can be able to prevent such contingencies, whether its utilitarianism or intuitionism. It still lies on us how we manage things in a different but wise perspective as we live day by day and as we take actions all the way.
