21st CENTURY - THE MEDIEVAL DIGITAL ERA - ROBBER BARON REVIVAL ERA
. . .
General
The world has entered new middle ages - the Medieval Digital Era. There is no way to predict how long it will last. The Medieval Digital Era resembles other medieval periods of various civilizations in many of its characteristics. However, it is unique in the exponential development of digital technologies, and their central role in this period. . .. .. . . . . .. . . .. . . .. . . .. . . .. . . .
Entrance to the Paradise Village Grand Marina Villas, Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit, Mexico. Gated communities are prevalent in the United States today, particularly in California. The fact that the English Wikipedia chose to provide a picture of a Mexican gated community, not a United States one, is a bit funny. The new building of the embassy of the United States in Moscow, one of a series of new, fortress like embassies. Castles, such as Heidelberg in Germany, were a prominent feature of the medieval period.

Magna Carta
Magna Carta
One of only 4 surviving exemplifications of the 1215 text, Cotton MS. Augustus II. 106, property of the British Library Created Location Authors 1215 Various copies Barons of King John of England
The Magna Carta established the principle that the sovereign is prohibited from depriving the life, liberty, or property without due process under the law of the land. Needless to say, in the Magna Carta itself, these fundamental rights were won only by lords. Due Process of the Law of the Land was deemed a jury of peers as well - meaning other lords. Regardless, the Magna Carta over the centuries was revered as a major achievement of the English legal system, which established "Liberty by Law".
User:InproperinLA Likewise, it was considered by the Framers of the US Constitution, and by notable Justices, like William Brennan, Jr, as the "Cornerstone of the US Constitution", and referred to as the "Great Writ". Due Process and the Law of the Land The jury system, which was established in the Magna Carta, and which was adopted in the US Constitution, was largely dismantled, and both state and US judges today bypass it as they wish. Public Access to Court Records The interpretation of "Due Process under the Law of the Land" was also debated over centuries. One feature of Due Process, which was recognized early on, and which remained recognized over the centuries, is the requirement that courts maintain valid records as public records, and that the public had the right to inspect and to copy those public records. This principle emerged in the late middle ages, under the English Common Law right "to access court records to inspect and to copy." In the United States that right was later recognized by the Supreme Court under Nixon v Warner Communications, Inc (1978). In that decision, the US Supreme Court re-affirmed that right, saying that it had existed all along, as part of the First, Sixth, and Fifth/Fourteenth Amendments. The transition of the state and US courts to electronic records was crucial in this respect. The transition was managed by the courts themselves, although it amounted to entire rewriting of court procedures that evolved over centuries. It also enabled the courts to entirely undermine the public's right for access to valid court records, while enabling the creation of the perception of the opposite. For example: The US courts encourage the public to use PACER (the online public access system). The US courts made the use of PACER close to free. However, the public is unable to discern, which of the records on PACER are valid US court records, and which are not. Similar conditions are found today in many "western democracies". The courts also like to restrict public access to court records under claims of "privacy". For example, court records in litigation of cases related to banks under the financial crisis, are difficult to access. It appears that the privacy of the persons that are banking institutions is highly protected... Habeas Corpus Habeas Corpus is considered to this day a fundamental Human Rights, which originated in the Magna Carta. It provides the right for judicial review of the legal foundation of the imprisonment, or deprivation of liberty of any prisoner. In Fay v Noia (1963), Justice William Brennen, Jr, writing for the majority, said: "The basic principle of the Great Writ of habeas corpus is that, in a civilized society... if the imprisonment cannot be shown to conform with the fundamental requirements of law, the individual is entitled to his immediate release".
portrait of Richard Fine in orange prisoner jumpsuit to be inserted here. All mentions of Richard Fine were deleted from the English Wikipedia.
When it comes to the "fundamental requirements of law", there was for centuries agreement that it included at least valid arrest and booking records for prisoners, referring to valid legal authority for the arrest and booking. Habeas Corpus also provides a good example of the tight relationship between fundamental Human Rights, valid court records, and public access to such records.
User:InproperinLA There is no way to enforce Habeas Corpus, unless there are valid court and prison records, and unless public access is guaranteed to at least some fundamental prisoners' records, e.g., Index of Prisoners, arrest and booking records, which refer to specific court records. In California, for example, arrest and booking records are public records by state law. However, in the Medieval Digital Era, there is no way to tell any longer, which of the electronic arrest and booking records are valid at all. In the case of Richard Fine, described below, the 70 year old, former US prosecutor, was held for 18 months in solitary confinement by the Sheriff of Los Angeles County, under electronic arrest and booking records, which stated that Richard Fine was arrested and booked on location and by authority of the "Municipal Court of Los Angeles". No such court exists today, and no such court existed during the time of Richard Fine's arrest and imprisonment. Moreover, the Sheriff of Los Angeles County refused to correct the records, even after their falsehood was repeatedly pointed out. In short: The case of Richard Fine must be deemed false imprisonment, for lack of valid arrest and booking records, by any reasonable person. Regardless, his Habeas Corpus was purportedly reviewed by: The US District Court, Central District of Califonria The US Court of Appeals, 9th Circuit, and The US Supreme Court All US courts refused to grant his Habeas Corpus petitions. Survey of the prisoners records in Los Angeles and Marine Counties, California, showed that use of false electronic prisoners' records is a routine today. As part of the 2010 UPR (Universal Period Review) of Human Rights in the United States, the Human Rights Council of the United Nations called upon the United States to restore the right for Habeas Corpus. The Constitution of the United States and its Amendments purported to guarantee many more civil and constitutional rights, beyond those that were guaranteed in the Magna Carta. Torture
Cruel and unusual punishment was common in the Middle Ages. In the Medieval Digital Era, torture became official policy in the United States. In the Medieval Digital Era, waterboarding was adopted as official interrogation technique by the United States. Waterboarding is a form of torture in which water is poured over the face of an immobilized captive, causing the individual to experience the sensation of drowning. Although a variety of specific techniques are used in waterboarding, the captive's face is usually covered with cloth or some other thin material, and the subject is immobilized on his/her back. Water is then poured onto the face over the breathing passages, causing an almost immediate gag reflex and creating the sensation that the captive is drowning. As part of the 2010 UPR (Universal Periodic Review) of Human Rights in the United States, the United Nations Human Rights Council called upon the United States to criminalize torture. Large-scale enslavement
In the middle ages the masses were enslaved a serfs with no lawful rights. The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, enacted following the Civil War, never abolished slavery. Instead, it subjected slavery to "due process" of law. In the Medieval Digital Era, one should consider the US prison system a new form of enslavement: While holding 5% of the world's population, the US hold 25% of the world's prisoners' population. Prisons have been privatized, and are often operated as for profit businesses by large corporations. Prisoners often work for corporations for wages as low as $0.25 per hour. The US launched a new series of Communication Management Units (CMUs) for individuals who are denied contact with the outside world during their imprisonment. Wars
Wars were common and long in the middle ages. The United States has entered in the Medieval Digital Era a period of ongoing wars in multiple arenas. Economic decline, financial instability, and wars, are tightly linked. For example: The Robber Baron Era of the 19th Century in the United States, led to financial instability, which led to the Great Depression. The Great Depression, in turn, is claimed as a major cause that eventually led to World War II. Some predict civil war in Europe as an outcome of the looking collapse of the Euro. Civil unrest in the United States is growing. . . . . . .. . . . . .. . . . .

Nuclear Holocaust
Serious scientists and political scholars are anxiously examining the possibility of a nuclear holocaust. Nuclear holocaust refers to the possibility of the nearly complete annihilation of human civilization by nuclear warfare. Under such a scenario, all or most of the Earth is made uninhabitable by nuclear weapons in future world wars. The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic clock face, maintained since 1947 by the board of directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago. The closer the clock is to midnight, the closer the world is estimated to be to global disaster. As of January 14, 2010, the Doomsday Clock now stands at six minutes to midnight.[1][2] Since its creation, the time on the clock has changed 19 times.[3] Originally, the analogy represented the threat of global nuclear war, but since 2007 it has also reflected climate-changing technologies and "new developments in the life sciences and nanotechnology that could inflict irrevocable harm."[4] LINKS: [1] 11-09-07 UBS: Euro Chaos_Moneynews.com Cant Survive, Demise to Spark

In the Medieval Digital Era, bankers again assumed the role of Robber Barons. Sovereign Immunity, and immunity of the aristocracy against prosecution by any others than their peers were inherent prerequisite for emergence of the original Raubritter Zeit in Germany (12th Century), and the Robber Baron Era in the United States (late 19th, early 20th Centuries). Today, financial institutions and their executives are again immune to prosecution, enabling their conduct as the new Robber Barons. LINKS:

Preservation of Knowledge
The middle ages incurred major loss of human knowledge in Christian Europe. Some of the ancient world's knowledge was preserved through the Muslim world, and some was preserved in remote parts of Europe (e.g., Ireland). While in the middle ages knowledge was preserved through the constant copying of manuscripts, in the Medieval Digital Era, knowledge may be preserved for an intermediate period of unknown length in various distributed digital online databases. . . . . . .. . . .. . . . .. . . . . . . .. .

The transition to digital technologies in data entry, archiving, and maintenance, is claimed to be a major factor in the current corruption of government and financial operations. Naturally, digital technologies could have increased transparency and integrity, by allowing more consistent enforcement of record keeping rules. However, in fact, the transition to digital technologies was managed in a manner that permits the falsification of records in both government and financial institutions, on a scale never seen since the middle ages. . . . . .. . . . .. . . . . . . .. . . .. . . .

Diagram showing how a simple digital signature is applied and then verified
Two main properties are required. First, a signature generated from a fixed message and fixed private key should verify the authenticity of that message by using the corresponding public key. Secondly, it should be computationally infeasible to generate a valid signature for a party who does not possess the private key. Digital Signature And Electronic Authentication Law (SEAL) of 1998 was introduced to the United States Senate, as S.1594, and was followed closely by H.R. 3472 which was introduced to the House of Representatives. This Bill sought to update the Bank Protection Act of 1968 in regards to electronic authentication techniques by financial institutions, and for other purposes[1]. The law is not enforced, and large scale fraud in banking records is inherent to the current Foreclosure Crisis in the United States. While laws and policies were established regarding digital signatures and authentication in the Executive Branch, the judiciary implemented on their own digital information systems in the courts. Large-scale fraud in such systems is claimed as a primary cause of the precipitous deterioration in integrity of the US justice system in recent decades. Large-scale fraud in PACER and CM/ECF - the digital information systems of the US courts was repeatedly documented in US courts from coast to coast.

Free Cities
Free city may refer to: City-state, region controlled exclusively by a sovereign city Free city (antiquity) a self-governed city during the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial eras Free Imperial City, city in the Holy Roman Empire under the emperor's direct control Free City of Danzig, two historical city-states that existed in what is now Gdask, Poland
There were various strategies for overcoming the hurdles and preserving human knowledge and civil society alive over such periods. One successful, long term strategy was the establishment of a Free City.
Disaster struck during the Black Death in the mid-14th century, when London lost nearly a third of its population. Steelyard It lay on the north bank of the Thames by the outflow of the Walbrook, its site now covered by Cannon Street station and commemorated in the name of Steelyard Passage. The Steelyard, like other Hansa stations, was a separate walled community with its own warehouses on the river, its own weighing house, church, counting houses and residential quarters. In 1988 remains of the former Hanseatic trading house, once the largest medieval trading complex in Britain, were uncovered by archaeologists during maintenance work on Cannon Street Station. As a church the Germans used former All-Hallows-the-Great, since there was only a small chapel on their own premises.

The first mention of a Hansa Almaniae (a "German Hansa") in English records is in 1282, concerning merely the community of the London trading post, only later to be made official as the Steelyard and confirmed in tax and customs concessions granted by Edward I, in a Carta Mercatoria ("merchant charter") of 1303. But the true power of the Hanse in English trade came much later, in the 15th century, as the German merchants, led by those of Cologne expanded their premises and extended their reach into the cloth-making industry of England. This led to constant friction over the legal position of English merchants in the Hanseatic towns and Hanseatic privileges in England, which repeatedly ended in acts of violence. Not only English wool but finished cloth was exported through the Hansa, who controlled the trade in Colchester and other cloth-making centres [6] . When the Georg Giese from Danzig, 34 year old German Steelyard was finally destroyed in 1469, the merchants of Cologne merchant at the Steelyard, painted in London by were exempted by Edward IV, which served to foment dissension Hans Holbein among Hansards when the Hanse cities went to war with England, and Cologne was temporarily expelled from the League. But England, in the throes of the Wars of the Roses, was in a weak bargaining position, so despite several heavy defeats suffered by the Hanseatic fleet, the Hansa achieved a very favourable peace from the English commissioners in Utrecht in 1474.[7] In 1475 the Hanseatic League finally purchased the London site outright and it became universally known as the Steelyard, but in fact this was the last outstanding success of the Hansa [8] . In exchange for the privileges the German merchants had to maintain Bishopsgate, one of the originally seven gates of the city, from where the roads led to their interests in Boston and Lynn. Members of the Steelyard, normally stationed in London for only a few years, sat for a famous series of portraits by Hans Holbein the Younger in the 1530s, portraits which were so successful that the Steelyard Merchants commissioned from Holbein the allegorical paintings The Triumph of Riches and The Triumph of Poverty for their Hall. Both were destroyed by a fire, but there are copies in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Also there is a fine description of the Steelyard by John Stow.
We may witness the rise of such Free Cities, defying both political and corporate sovereigns, for the benefit of their own People and the People everywhere. . . .

The concept of Human Dignity, ushered in by Pico della Mirandola in his famous Oration on the Dignity of Man which has been called the "Manifesto of the Renaissance", and a key text of Renaissance humanism. Human Rights, which originated following World War II, through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, are in precipitous retreat during the Medieval Digital Era in nations that were considered by some centers of Civil Society. The international community seems to comprehend in principle that the safeguard on Human Rights is essential for the preservation and prosper of Civil Society, and also for Socio-economic Development. However, in practice, it is claimed that major retreat in these areas took place in recent decades in "Western Democracies". . . . ... . . . . . . . . . .

Rampart-FIPs (Falsely Imprisoned Persons) - Large-Scale False Imprisonment in Los Angeles County, California
The number of the Rampart-FIPs, victims of the Rampart Corruption Scandal (1998-2000), the largest court corruption in the United States, is unknown, but was estimated in many thousands. They were documented by official media, and expert reports to have been falsely prosecuted, falsely convicted, and falsely sentenced. They are almost exclusively black and Latinos. Ten years later, most have not been released. The Blue Ribbon Review Panel Report (2006) concluded: "Innocent people remain in prison" The same report also documented the judges of the Los Angeles Superior Court objecting to the release of the Rampart-FIPs, since it would cause "collapse of the justice system". QUOTES: judges tried and sentenced a staggering number of people for crimes they did not commit. How could so many participants in the criminal justice system have failed either to recognize or to instigate any meaningful scrutiny of such appalling and repeated perversions of justice? we felt a particular obligation to ensure that no aspect of the Los Angeles criminal justice system, including the lawyers and judges, escaped scrutiny. Prof David W. Burcham, then Dean, and Prof Catherine L. Fisk, Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, Rampart symposium, 2000 Any analysis of the Rampart scandal must begin with an appreciation of the heinous nature of what the officers did. This is conduct associated with the most repressive dictators and police states. and judges must share responsibility when innocent people are convicted. Prof Erwin Chemerinsky, today Dean of Irvine Law School, University of California, 57 Guild Prac. 121, 2000 LINKS: [1] 09-12-17-Rampart-FIPs (Falsely Imprisoned Persons) - Review http://www.scribd.com/doc/24729660/
No adequate images were found in commons of wikipedia of either the Rampart scandal or the Rampart FIPs. The image that was included in wikipedia under the Rampart scandal is of the new Rampart police station, which is unrelated to the issue.

ANARCHISM
Various anarchistic ideas, if not by name, flourished in Europe in the middle ages. During the Robber Baron Era (late 19th, early 20th centuries), anarchy gained popularity in the United States. Suspected Anarchists were prosecuted, and some were also executed. Movements of anarchistic tendencies proliferate in the United States today. Such movements deny any legitimacy of the United States government. Among such movements one should list: . . . . . . . . . .. .. . . . .. .

The fact that such tendencies are practically mainstream today, can be seen in the cover of Time magazine for the July 4th, 2011, issue. It showed the US Constitution, shredded, with the title: Does it still matter? Perhaps the most striking example of this phenomenon was the call by Senator (D) Patrick Leahy in 2008 for the institution of a "Truth and Reconciliation Commission" on the US Department of Justice. Such commissions were instituted in various nations upon emergence from under tyranny. Digital Anarchism is herein defined as a branch of the anarchist schools of thought, which denies the authority of various political and corporate sovereigns today, as illegitimate. Digital Anarchists emphasize the role of digital technologies in the subjugation of the masses in the Medieval Digital Era, and the powers of individuals to exploit digital technologies for resisting the subjugation. Wikileaks, Anonymous, and Hacking may be considered by some as digital anarchistic conduct. US officials have repeatedly called for Julian Assange's assassination in recent years. His fate at present is on the limb.
