MANUFACTURED TIMBER PRODUCTS

1.

VENEERS

Veneers are thin sheets of wood of thickness 0.4 mm- 6mm that are peeled off, sliced or sawn from a log having attractive of artistic pattern of grains. They are glued on to inferior timber surfaces to improve the appearance and to form decorative and artistic designs. Veneers are used in the manufacture of ply wood, lamin boards and batten boards. 2. Plywood

Plywood is an assembly of plies (veneers) made by gluing together plies in odd numbers. The Gluing is done under pressure. They are usually three ply, five ply or seven ply depending on the number of plies used and those with more than three plies are known as multi-plies. Face ply Core Face ply Cross grains Ply woods are preferred in structural usage because; It has good appearance It is stronger three times stronger than a solid board of equivalent thickness. It has uniform tensile strength It can be easily bent to give any shape It is available in large sizes which is not possible with solid boards It suffers negligible shrinkage and expansion It dose not split when nailed near edges because of its cross grains. Uses. Plywood are used for covering or paneling walls for doors, furniture, shuttering, making packages and in petition walls

3.

Lamin Boards

Lamin board is a board of a built up core of laminae not more than 8mm wide glued between two or more plies .the core laminae are built in a pattern that makes its grains be at right angles to those of the outer plies. Ply

Ply Lamin boards are light and strong and do not crack of or split easily. They are used for the construction of partition from walls, packaging cases, ceiling furniture and doors. 4. Block Boards

There are similar to lamin boards but the core is built up of blocks not exceeding 25mm wide. The blocks are glued between two or more outer plies with the grains of the core at right angles to that of outer plies. They are cheaper than lamin boards and are used for platform walls and doors. Ply

Batten Board

Batten boards are similar to the block boards but the core consists of close grained battens of not more than 8cm width and 2-3cm thick glued edge to edge between two or more plies. The grain of the core battens is at right angles to that of the adjacent outer ply sheets. Ply

Ply Like other manufactured boards batter boards are light, strong not easily split or crank. They are extensively used in platform walls, ceilings, pecking cases and doors. 6. Particle Boards

These are boards manufactured from chips of wood wastes, small size timber pieces, edging of saw mills, end cuts, stumps, corn stalks and other woody materials. these raw materials are crushed to convert into chips, dried to moisture content of less than 15% and then sprayed with adhesives. The adhesive sprayed chips are then spread in even layers to attain the desired thickness of the board, pressed in hydraulic presses and the surfaces veneered. Chip boards are used for exposed interior wall and ceiling surfaces, wall sheeting and for heat and sound insulation.
