News Integration Manager / Senior Producer / Producer

Portland, Oregon October 2002-Present

In 6 years, I created and produced 3 brand-new daily newscasts: Live @ 7, NewsChannel 8: Decision 2008, and NewsChannel 8 @ 10. I produced Portland's #1-rated 11 pm newscast for 3 years. I produce specials, breaking news, and other newscasts as needed. In 2010, I became KGWs first News Integration Manager, tasked with finding ways for our broadcast and online teams to work more closely and efficiently. As part of the newsroom management team, I fill in regularly to run the newsroom on a day-to-day basis. Live @ 7 is a new approach to evening news programming that leverages social media to combine hard news, local arts reporting, technology coverage, and online audience interaction. In nearly 3 years on the air, Live @ 7 has attracted a younger, more tech-savvy audience than the programs that traditionally run in the access time period. I'm the creator of @TheSquare, by far the most influential media Twitter account in Oregon. I maintain the Live @ 7 section on kgw.com and contribute to KGW's Facebook presence across several pages. I train newsroom staff on best practices in social media. I present at high-profile social media events including the 140 Characters Conference and Ignite Portland. Im a regular guest on cascadia.fms Redoing Media podcast. As a newsroom manager, I'm the primary trainer for new producers, and the first contact for anyone with writing, formatting, or technical questions. I work closely with engineering and IT to plan and implement new newsroom technology. As part of my Live @ 7 duties,I maintain relationships with numerous arts organizations, businesses, and political groups in Oregon and Washington. Ive been KGWs primary contact for our partnerships with The Oregonian and Alpha Broadcasting. Other duties at KGW include managing election returns, for which I created an automated data collection system that puts numbers on the air and online faster than the AP and our competition, while saving the station from having to pay stringers in the field. I train KGWs art and news departments on best practices using Google Earth and other map visualization tools.
