Peripheral
Arterial
Disease
screenings
set for this
month
Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial will
conduct screenings for Peripheral Arterial
Disease (P.A.D.), a disease that affects mil-
lions of Americans.
Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial
(SHGM) will be screening for P.A.D. the last
three Tuesdays in September: from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m. on Sept. 13; from 10 a.m. to 7:30
p.m. on Sept. 20; and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
on Sept. 27.
P.A.D is a medical condition that affects
blood circulation in the legs. The most com-
mon symptom is leg pain, often brought on
by walking. This pain occurs when blood fow
to the legs is severely reduced, usually from
the buildup of plaque in the arteries. People
with P.A.D. are at higher risk for heart at-
tack, stroke, leg amputation and other seri-
ous health issues.
The chance of having P.A.D. increases
as you get older. People over age 50 have a
higher risk, and the risk is increased even
more if you smoke (or used to smoke), have
diabetes, have (or have a family history of)
high blood pressure or high cholesterol lev-
els, are African-American, or have had heart
disease, a heart attack or a stroke.
The most common signs of P.A.D. include
one or more of these problems:
nCramps, tiredness or pain in your legs,
thighs or buttocks that always happens when
you walk but that goes away when you rest
(indicating severely reduced blood fow to
the legs).
nFoot or toe pain at rest that often dis-
turbs your sleep.
n Skin wounds or ulcers on your feet or
toes that heal slowly.
nColor changes on the skin of the feet.
n A lower temperature in one leg com-
pared with the other.
Some people have P.A.D., but dont show
any symptoms of the condition. It is impor-
tant to discuss any leg or thigh pain you may
be having with your health care provider as
it may be a warning sign of a serious disease.
P.A.D. can be treated with lifestyle changes,
medicines and surgical procedures, if need-
ed. Since people with P.A.D. are at high risk
for heart attacks and stroke, they must take
charge of controlling each risk factors related
to cardiovascular disease.
Cost for this screening is $30. Remember:
The earlier P.A.D. is discovered, the more op-
tions you will have. Treatment can improve
your quality of life, including relieving pain
in the legs so you can enjoy daily activities.
To register for a P.A.D. screening, or for
questions, call (231) 924-2810.
LANSING All across
Michigan, students are heading
back to school, and many fami-
lies will choose to pack lunches
for their kids to make sure they
are making healthy food choic-
es. The Michigan Department
of Agriculture & Rural Develop-
ment (MDARD) reminds par-
ents to follow some basic food
safety guidelines when packing
lunches for their children, to
reduce the risk of foodborne
illness and to make sure those
healthy choices stay healthy.
Preparing lunches for your
children to take to school means
food can go unrefrigerated for
extended periods of time, said
MDARD Director Keith Creagh.
By taking a few food safety pre-
cautions, you can help reduce
the risk of your childs lunch
becoming a breeding ground for
food-borne illness.
Tips for assuring your childs
lunch is safe:
nPut something cold in the
lunch box. A fun trick is to freeze
a juice box overnight and put it
right next to a sandwich. This
ensures the sandwich wont get
too warm and your child still
has a cold drink at lunchtime!
If you dont want to take a juice
box, a small, plastic refrigerator
container flled with water and
put into the freezer the night
before will work too. You can
also place icepacks between
food items to keep them colder
longer.
n Freeze your sandwiches.
This works better with coarse-
textured breads that wont get
soggy when they thaw. The
sandwich will be thawed by the
time your child eats lunch, and
it keeps everything else in the
lunch box cold. (If your child
likes lettuce, tomato and may-
onnaise, pack those separately.
They dont freeze well, and your
child may not like the taste
when they thaw.)
n Rinse fruits and vegeta-
bles under running tap water,
including those with skins and
rinds that are not eaten. Dry
with a paper towel.
n Use a thermos to keep
milk or juice cold until lunch-
time. Some juices dont even
need to be refrigerated.
n Remind your child
to keep his/her lunch in
the coolest place possible.
If the school has a refrig-
erator available for stu-
dents to use, have your
child store the lunch
there.
n Keep it clean!
Make sure the coun-
tertops are clean when
preparing the lunch and
regularly wash and sani-
tize your childs lunch box.
Show your child proper hand
washing, using warm, soapy
water, before they eat. Hand
washing is even more critical
to help stop the transmission
of diseases like infuenza.

Tips Program
The National Megans Law Helpline
(888) ASK-PFML (888) 275-7365, is
available to provide support to communi-
ties: on issues related to accessing sex of-
fender registration information; respon-
sible use of information; sexual abuse
prevention resources; and accessing
crime victim support services. Parents for
Megans Law (PFML) staff provide assis-
tance to the community in accessing their
state sex offender registries and preven-
tion specialists provide support to par-
ents and community members to assist in
their sexual abuse prevention education
strategies. Certifed rape crisis counselors
are available to support all victims of vio-
lent crime and to provide geographically
appropriate referrals.
The Sex Offender Registration Tips
Program provides the public an opportu-
nity to report registrants who are failing
to comply with registration requirements,
employment or supervision restrictions
or who are in positions of trust where they
can access children. Tips can be provided
via the Helpline or website at www.par-

not intended to be used to report police
emergencies. Dial 911 or contact your lo-
cal law enforcement agency directly for
emergencies. Agency deputized staff work
collaboratively with federal, state and lo-
cal law enforcement agencies to facilitate
the appropriate follow-up action.

Whether you are looking to switch
jobs or are out of work, it can now take
longer than ever to fnd a new job.
And its not just the economy thats to
blame.
The rules have changed when
it comes to fnding jobs, says Wil-
liam Holland, author of the new book
Cracking the New Job Market. Glo-
balization and technological advances
have permanently transformed the
job market. Its not about your cre-
dentials, but rather the value you offer
a company.
Recruiter Tony Beshara agrees. A
rsum is not a simple list of your cre-
dentials, devoid of context, says Be-
shara, author of the new guide, Un-
beatable Rsums. Its a sales tool
that lets the hiring authority know
you can perform the duties needed
immediately.
To help job seekers, Holland and
Beshara offer the following advice:
n Be open to all opportunities. In
decades past, job seekers were told
that networking was critical to fnd-
ing the right job, as if there was a
hidden job market only others knew
about. That may have been true when
companies hired family members and
friends of employees, but in todays
competitive market, companies are
focused on hiring the person who can
best do the job with minimal train-
ing.
So dont shy away from applying
to postings on job boards or company
websites. But continue to reach out to
friends and family, or even connec-
tions through social networking sites
like LinkedIn. Just know that the most
important thing is that you match a
companys desired attributes.
n Tailor your rsum. The aver-
age rsum gets read in ten seconds.
With that kind of attention span, you
better make sure your rsum stands
out. This doesnt mean using distract-
ing formats or fourishes. Make sure
your rsum refects the responsibili-
ties of the job in language the screener
(often not an expert in your feld) can
understand.
n Ace the interview. You need to
demonstrate the value you can bring
to a company through the interview
process. Before interviewing, prepare
by making a chart listing the jobs re-
sponsibilities and your matching ex-
perience. But remember, the key to
achieving maximum performance is
to enter any testing situation with an
uncluttered mind.
n Plan for the future. The average
white collar worker holds a job for two
and a half to three years, according to
Beshara. Therefore, its wise to plan
for future job searches after getting
your next job.
This means planning for a future
period of unemployment by saving for
an emergency fund and living within
your means so you dont accrue debt,
says Holland. It also means keeping in
touch with your network and updat-
ing your rsum as you log accom-
plishments, adds Beshara.
More tips on fnding a job in to-
days economy can be found in the
new books Unbeatable Resumes
and Cracking the New Job Market.

Fix It Before It Is Too Late
This week a man came to the ofce because he can not breathe without supplemental oxygen. He has been diagnosed
with pulmonary brosis. This is scar tissue and calcium build up in his lungs. He also has a great deal of swelling in his legs. He
wanted to know if there is anything natural that he can do to x this problem. He asks this as he is struggling to get air with
an oxygen cannula in his nose.
I just sat for a moment and starred at him. I was awestruck. Here was a perfectly good body totally broken down, ghting
for survival. Is it possible to help?
Three years ago we sat in these same chairs. He had aged at least 10 years in just that short time. Back then, he was
extremely stressed over some business issues that were causing him to feel great anxiety, worry, and depression. In his
attempt to medicate himself, he was drinking alcohol at night until he passed out. Otherwise he could not sleep. When he
woke up he would have to drink coffee and smoke cigarettes for hours so he could get cranked up enough to face another
stress lled day.
In my notes I could see that I had prescribed some medicine, but the advice for life style changes had been completely
ignored. He is still drinking coffee and coke. He said his other doctor told him it was OK. And twice a day he still has to
light up a smoke. Amazingly, he has quit drinking alcohol, but I noticed that he was a little yellow. Sure enough, the lab tests
conrmed that he has a very sick liver on top of the ruined lungs.
The fact that his heart and kidneys were still doing well, is a testament to the tremendous ability of our body to compensate,
adjust, and heal itself. Finally, after years of abuse, one or more systems become completely overwhelmed and begin to fail.
This problem begins in the mind. When the nancial problems began, he did his best to deal with the problems in the only
way he knew. But even when given advice that he asked for and paid for, he was unable to get out of the rat race. Maybe he
did not believe that the smoking, alcohol, coffee, pop, and over-eating would eventually catch up to
him. Or maybe at some level he really just did not want to live anymore. I do not know.
For this man it may be too late, but maybe it is not. Only time will tell. Can he stop the intake of
toxins now? Will he take the recommended herbs and homeopathics? Does he have a strong enough
will to live? Is there more on this earth that he still has to do? Are there lessons he still needs to learn
or teach? Only he and God know the answer.
For everyone reading this, please stop for a moment. Think. Are you poisoning yourself in some
way? For many of us, myself included, the answer is yes. I love sugar. So, take inventory. Is this
damaging to your body? Is it xable? If you stopped the toxin, would your life be better? Would you
live longer? For what reason? For most of us it is not too late to change. For some it is and that makes
me extremely sad.

The injured roofer. On November 20, 2006,
Richard A. Bouma, of Kent County, was injured
in a fall while preparing to clean a roof on prop-
erty owned by Bravogrand, Inc., Bison Realty and
Quality Dining, Inc. The ladder was made of two
pieces, one attached to the roof so he thought
the other a detachable extension ladder reach-
ing to the ground. Bouma had tested the two-piece
ladder. It felt sound but he wanted to make sure.
He put weight on it. It seemed ne. Bouma then
climbed the ladder carrying cleaning supplies in
one hand and holding onto the ladder with the oth-
er. As he reached the top of the ladder, he fell. The
ladder was still in his hand. (Bet he was surprised)
Before it happened, and as he fell, Bouma didnt
see, hear, or feel anything to indicate that the lad-
der was going to detach from the roof.
The owners investigation. The owners had an
accident report prepared, however, the report itself
was missing at trial.
The roofers but-for case. Mr. Boumas law suit
for negligence rested on circumstantial evidence
and a but-for legal theory known by its old Latin
name: res ipsa loquitor, which means the thing
speaks for itself. To Bouma it was obvious that
but for someones negligence during installa-
tion of the ladder, it would have been secure and
safe. Since the ladder was not properly installed, it
must have been negligently installed. And it could
only have been the owners negligence. The judge
thought differently.
No evidence. Bouma failed to present an air-tight
case when he failed to present enough evidence.
He failed to show the ladder was in good shape,
that the roof was in good shape, or that installation
or installation equipment was missing or defective.
Maybe he should have had a forensics examination
done on the ladder, but he didnt. The defendants
testied they did not know where the ladder even
was. And Bouma hadnt tried to locate it before
trial.
The air-tight case. To establish a prima facie
(more Latin) air tight case of negligence, Bouma
had to prove four things: (1) defendants owed him
a duty, (2) defendants breached that duty, (3) that
breach of duty caused Bouma damages, and (4) the
amount of damages. Boumas case failed on points
two and three: Bouma failed to show that defen-
dants breached their duty, or that they in any way
caused his injuries. While the ladder apparently
detached from the roof, no evidence was presented
to show whether the detachment resulted from a
problem with the ladder, the means of attachment,
the material into which it was attached, a move-
ment made by Bouma, or some other cause. And at
trial, the defendants report was missing. In short,
the judge said Boumas theory was conjecture, not
proof.
The missing report. Bouma tried to convince
the judge that the ladder and the report must be
damaging to the defendants, else why were they
missing? He argued that they were purposefully
being hidden because they were the smoking gun,
pointing directly at the defendants, showing how
the ladder had indeed been negligently installed,
and thus being withheld by defendants, with the
intention of hiding the truth from the court. But
Bouma forgot the principle tenet of any lawsuit,
that the sue-er must present the evidence, not the
sue-ee. Bouma could have presented evidence of
what was in the missing report. How? By subpoe-
naing the person who did the inspection and wrote
the report, to court, to explain to the judge what
he had found out about the ladder falling. Broken
elbow, broken court case, lesson learned.
