They loved the drama, the rumble of the haka and that young man in red and black - through the world's eyes, our opening ceremony was ka pai. Media reports from around the globe bandied about words like spine-tingling, mesmerising, spectacular and dazzling to describe the much anticipated opening event.

Bernard Lapasset, the French chairman of the International Rugby Board (IRB), officially declared the tournament open after a 30-minute ceremony celebrating the country's Maori heritage and unrivalled rugby pedigree. They are the latest flash-mob to perform the haka Maui Potiki, and the group of young Maori leaders from around the country were also responsible for the flash-mob haka at an Auckland mall earlier in the week which has been a major hit on YouTube. Frenchman Jeremy Fleaury said: "Being in New Zealand to see the haka like that it just surprises, it's awesome, really awesome. I hope tonight will be perfect as well."
