The University of Copenhagen offers courses in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology on bachelor, masters and PhD levels.

The first students began a complete interdisciplinary bachelor and masters education in Nanoscience in September 2002. The new interdisciplinary area covered by the terms "nanoscience" and "nanotechnology" will have a great influence on future scientific and technological development all over the world. Nanotechnology and Nanoscience deals with understanding and utilising nano scale structures. The basic education includes both physics, chemistry and biology, but nano systems are at the forefront from the very beginning. The education opens the door to many opportunities: With a bachelor degree it is possible to continue studying and become cand.scient. or PhD in nanoscience. It is also possible to switch to one of the classic masters educations like biochemistry, human biology, chemistry, bioinformatics or physics. Students with a degree in Nanoscience are much-coveted on the job market both in Denmark and abroad. The knowledge offered by nanoscience is going to be important in all fields of technology in the future. Nanos means dwarf Nanos means dwarf in Greek. A nanometer is one billion of a meter. Nanotechnology is the ability to work on an atomic, molecular and supramolecular level. By controlling the atomic and molecular structure, we are able to invent new materials, components and systems with new attractive features and functions. Nanotechnology have emerged within the borderland between physics, chemistry and biology. The classic sciences have taught us how atoms and molecules behave. In the future, we should like to control and organize them into new structures with new abilities.

Small sizes with great potential With molecules as building blocks, nanotechnology will create new structures and constructions. Electronic nanocircuits that assemble themselves, intelligent nanocontainers, which are able to apply medicine without side effects and in accordance with the needs of the patient, super-strong materials, or new ecologically desirable catalysts, are just some of the promising opportunities. There is moreover research with new biocompatible materials for implants and with optical nanostructures for fast communication.
