New 20nm NAND process will lead to higher capacity tablets and SSDs
ntel and Micron has announced a ner 20-nanometer (nm) process technology for manufacturing NAND ash memory, which is likely to lead to higher capacity plug-in ash drives, solid state devices and tablets early next year. The new 20nm process produces an 8-gigabyte (GB) multi-level cell (MLC) NAND ash device. The result will be higher capacity in a smaller space and for around the same price as todays technology.
isco has completed its acquisition of newScale, which provides a self-service portal for cloud services deployments. Ciscos cloud strategy is to harness the network as a platform for building and using clouds and cloud services. Cisco says that the capabilities of newScale will complement and expand existing Cisco and partner software offerings in IT and cloud management and automation.

s latest SMB Index, has found that SMEs have grown by six per cent on average over the last six months, despite the problems in the broader economy. The survey, which polled 1,000 companies with fewer than 50 staff, also found that 48% of SMEs are turning to social media to help grow the business and reach new audiences. It also found that over two-thirds of respondents are optimistic about the year ahead, expecting to grow by as much as 13 percent.

The exhibition was very well supported, with the most interest going to HP Large Format Printers which drew the largest crowd. Overall, feedback from delegates was that the event was excellent. SME Training Weekends take place twice a year, if youd like to attend one of these highly benecial events, make sure you keep an eye open for the dates and express your interest at the earliest possible stage.
One specic element of the weekend we wanted to deliver was InTouch training, resellers had in depth training on the new features and learnt how to get the most out of our e-commerce platform. To support this we also provided meetings with our Credit Services team, to enable delegates to discuss the range of options which Computer 2000 provide to support their business.
The situation in Japan business as usual for now from where we stand
here has been almost continuous speculation in the media over the past few weeks about what impact the knock-on effects of the disaster in Japan might have on products and components that originate from the north-east of the country. The rst point to make though is that we continue to send our condolences and best wishes to everyone affected by the events that took place on 11 March. The human impact being felt there now would certainly put any problems we might have in the UK with product supply in perspective. From a pragmatic point of view, it looks as if it will be some time before normal levels of production are resumed in the affected region. Other facilities have ramped up
production and as yet its not completely clear exactly how supplies will be impacted. The core advice being passed down is not to jump to any conclusions. Buyers and sellers should simply continue to trade as normal and, although there have been some movements already, do not expect prices or product supplies to uctuate in any dramatic way. omputer 2000 has formed a Consumer Electronics (CE) business unit to provide specialist sales and support to multiple and independent retailers, addressing the twin challenges of growth and protability in the UK retail market. In the run-up to the formal launch of the CE division, Computer 2000 has been ramping up its sales of consumer electronics devices such as TV, audio products and digital cameras building on its management of the Philips consumer electronics UK Business. The new addition to the companys Collection of Specialists business units will also now be responsible for the Retail channels for IT Products including laptops and printers. David Watts has been appointed as Director of the CE division with Jim Barnes, continuing as Retail Sales Director. Watts said: Being successful in retail is very much about making sure that you put the right products in front of the consumer and with the tremendous nancial and logistics relationships we have within our business, and
our ability to deliver multiple technologies through multiple routes to market, no organisation is better-placed to help Retailers and Vendors do that than Computer 2000. A 20-strong team is already in place to provide Vendors specialist sales and merchandising support to CE & IT Retail customers and an additional 10 heads will be recruited in the next 3 months focused on eld sales and category management. The CE business unit already offers a number of high-value services as part of its offering, including virtual warehousing and drop ship vending, making it easier for retailers to take products to market.
As well as the wide portfolio of leading solutions from key CE vendors such as Apple, Sony, Samsung, LG, Sharp and Toshiba and many others, the CE division will be looking to broaden its portfolio signicantly. New product lines are likely to include consumer mobile devices, digital video cameras and home cinema projectors and television and audio equipment. Its now been renamed Cloud Partner Connect and weve added further enhancements to the scheme ahead of the forthcoming launch of Microsoft Office 365. Newsash: Why has Computer 2000 decided to form a CE division now? Wasnt it in the retail business before? Watts: We have always traded with retailers but have started to work with larger customers in the sector in the last 18 months so now we trade with pretty much everyone. We sell a very wide range of consumer products: laptops, Apple iPods and Macs, printers, software, supplies and, as more business technologies have started to nd their way into the consumer space, thats applied across all our divisions. What we have sold fewer of in the past are Consumer Electronics products TVs, MP3 players, cameras, audio and electrical appliances. The main reason behind this is that weve been strategically focused on other areas of our business. Why now? Firstly, because the convergence of IT, consumer electronics and mobile solutions is compelling us to put a real focus on Consumer Electronics. Secondly, manufacturers and customers who we service with IT products have been saying to us that they like the support and value add we deliver in the business market and are asking us to work with them in the CE market as well. Newsash: Will the CE division be a completely separate and distinct division with its own teams and structure? Or will it be more cross-divisional and draw together products and people with expertise in different areas from other specialist business units? Watts: Well manage all Consumer Electronics products from within the Consumer Electronics division, but IT Products for example laptops will remain inside the Core IT Divisions. We will, however, be able to add more value into the Retail Channels that sell them. If its a product with a clear consumer focus, a TV for example, well manage and sell it completely within the CE division. So, well retain all the product expertise on products such as laptops, printers and projectors that sit within the specialist business units, whilst having the retail channel relationships within the CE Division. Newsash: Where exactly will you be focusing your efforts with the CE business unit? Is it on the big multiples, on independent retailers, or on e-tailers and webstores? Watts: The short answer is all of them. The feedback weve been getting from vendors is that they have challenges reaching far enough into the independent retailer sector and we can add a lot of value there and help both vendors and retailers by managing the channel and providing services, offers and promotions for example. At the other end of the scale, there are big opportunities for us in supply-chain management and in providing extended product ranges. In situations where only a limited range of products are being offered in-store, we will be able to provide services such as stock management and drop-ship. We will set products up, manage web content, the supply chain and provide shipment to the customer.
Newsash: What can retail customers expect from Computer 2000 that they dont get from other distributors at the moment? Watts: First of all its the range of products we offer. No-one has the range of IT, CE and mobile products we can offer or the ability to support solutions that are converging. Its also the depth and breadth of service that we have. Customers may simply want to order products, or need full supply chain management services or want to extend the range of products they offer. Some retailers may even want to work on a panEuropean basis we can do all of these things. Newsash: What do you see that as your greatest strength in the retail market from a vendor perspective? Watts: Our exibility and ability to work with you and take whatever technology to whatever channels and markets you need to, using whatever model you like. Newsash: What do you see as the major opportunities and challenges in this market going forward both for retailers and for the new business unit? Watts: Getting back to growth is the major challenge. In order to grow and make money, retailers need to nd different ways of working. Thats what we are offering the market, with services such as virtual warehousing, consignment stock and extended ranging. Its a good time for us to come into the market because we have something different that we can offer both to vendor partners and to retail customers. Newsash: What will your priorities be in the rst year? Watts: The Consumer Electronic division is a big investment for us. By the end of the year, the team will be twice the size it was at the beginning of the year and were also investing in additional warehousing and logistics capabilities, as well as additional expertise and systems. This gives Computer 2000 exibility in its model which can add bespoke value to our Vendors and Customers. The message we are sending to the market right now is one that says, if you are in retail and you have not worked with us before, we are absolutely in this market and we want to work with you in whatever way works best for you.

Up to now, if you placed an order early in the day and wanted to make changes, youd have had to call your Account Manager or sales contact and get them to make the changes for you. (That is, of course, as long as it had not already been authorised and sent for picking and packing). You now have the ability to place an order on InTouch in the normal way and by selecting the Order Reservation option add to or amend right up until 3:30pm that day, at which point, the order will be automatically released for despatch to a single address. Weve added this feature in response to customer feedback. It enables you to secure stock and come back and make adjustments throughout the morning and early afternoon as things change as they often do.
Modifying Orders
Another important new feature here is that you can now modify outstanding and end-of-line (EOL) items on your backorders. If products are EOL, InTouch will suggest a replacement option which you can now amend yourself or simply cancel without needing to contact your Account Manager. This is useful as it saves you time and means you are in complete control.

The Connection Roadshows will be full-day events. They will consist of a series of core presentations from us, accompanied by break-out sessions and workshops that will enable you to nd out about the different aspects of our services in more depth. There will also be presentations from the specialist divisions, including the recently-formed TD Consumer Electronics (CE) business unit, and from key vendors. An exhibition area will provide a forum in which you can see the very latest products and network with the team from Computer 2000 and vendor partners to discuss how they can assist you in meeting the needs of your SMB audience.
The rst three Connection Roadshows will be held at the above locations this summer. Over the next 12 months, the roadshow will visit all corners of the British Isles, including Scotland, Wales, the south-west of England and Ireland. Keep a look out for your invitation and make sure that you reserve your place as soon as you can were expecting them to be snapped up pretty quickly.
