KALASALINGAM UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING ASSIGNMENT-II Sub Name/Code: MEC303/Design of Machine Elements Answer all Questions. 1.

A shaft running at 500rpm transmits a power of 10Kw. Asssume allowable shear stress as 40 N/mm2. Find the diameter of shaft. 2. A pair of wheels of a Cycle Ricksaw carries a load of 3kN. The distance between the wheels is 1.6m and the load is acting at a distance of 200mm from each end. Find the diameter of the shaft. Assume allowable bending stress as 90N/mm2. 3. A solid circular shaft is to transmit 112kW at 500 rpm with provision for a 20% overload. The angle of twist must not to exceed 1 degree in a length of 15 diameters. For practical reasons, the diameter must not be more than 85mm. Design the shaft. Adopt mild steel with a working shear stress of 60 N/mm2. 4. A short shaft made of C45 Steel receives 50kW at 300 rpm via a 300 spur gear, the power being delivered to another shaft through a flexible coupling. The gear is keyed midway between the bearings. The pressure angle of gear is 20 and factor is 2. Bearings are 500mm apart. Find thge diameter of shaft. 5. A mild steel shaft rotating at 720rpm is supported between two bearings 80cm apart. It carries two pulleys A and B at distance of 30cm and 60cm resply from the left bearing. 10kW of power is fed into the pulley A with a diameter of 40cm and taken out at the pulley B with a diameter of 30cm be vertical belt drives having the same ratio of driving tensions, which was observed to be 2.5. Assuming the following working stresses design the diameter of the shaft. 6. A solid shaft is supported on two bearings 2m apart and rotates at 500 rpm. The two pulleys whose diameters measuring 800mm and 600mm resply are mounted on the shaft at distances 400mm and 1200mm respectively to the right to the left hand bearing. A 20 involute gear of 300mm diameter is beyed to the shaft at a distence of 200mm to the left and right hand bearing. A power of50 kw is supplied to the gear out of which 30 kw is transmitted by bigger pulley weighing 600N and 20 kw is transmitted by the smaller pulley whose weight measure 450N.The drive from bigger pulley is vertically. Down and from smaller pulley is horizondal. The tension ratio for both pulleys is 2. Design the shaft for the working stress of 45 Mpa in shear and 80mpa in tension. Assume the combined stock and fatique factore for bearing and torsion as 2 and 1.5 respectively 7. Design a muff coupling to transmit a power of 30kw from a shaft running at 120 rpm. 8. Design a clamp coupling to transmit 30kw at 960 rpm. The allowable shear stress for the shaft and key is 40 N/mm2. The number of bolts connecting the halves is 6 and the permissible tensile stress for the bolts is 70 N/mm2. Assume the coefficient of friction between the shaft and muff as 0.3 and the design shear stress for the coupling as 15 N/mm2. 9. A rigit flang coupling is to be designed to transmit 20 kw at 1000 rpm. Assuming suitable allowable stresses, design the coupling. 10. Design a flexible flange coupling a bush type to trasmit 3 kw power at 960 rpm with a service factor of 1.2. assume design stress are Zs/Zk/Zb=50 N/mm2, Zcoupling=20 N/mm2, Z for bushes in bearing= 2 N/mm2, Z for key in casing=100 N/mm2
