COINS FOR CHANGE

KATHLEEN MCINTIRE, FOUNDER OF COINS FOR CHANGE WITH MAASAI STUDENTS

Its been a busy year for Coins For Change!

Since being approved as a 501(c)3 nonprot foundation in 2009, Coins For Change has enjoyed the support of many generous donors and school children in the Netherlands, Germany, England, and the United States. Together we are helping to build the educational skills of poor, marginalized Maasai children which will enable these children to improve their quality of life and that of future generations while maintaining their unique culture. Coins For Change has purchased 246 goats, 13 cows, 2 bulls, have sent two people to receive surgery by Smile Train, and have sponsored 23 students to attend school. Coins For Change for the past three years has sent Chief Joseph Ole Sankale to DayStar University. He now manages our activities in Amboseli.

WHY GOATS MILK?

GOATS PROVIDE LIFE SUSTAINING MILK. ALTHOUGH THE MINERAL CONTENT OF GOAT S MILK AND COWS MILK IS SIMILAR, GOATS MILK CONTAINS 13% MORE CALCIUM, 25% MORE VITAMIN B-6, 47% MORE VITAMIN A, 134% MORE POTASSIUM, AND THREE TIMES MORE NIACIN.

ADOPT A BOMA
A boma is a traditional Maasai village enclosure with huts made of mud and cow dung. The boma is a set of three concentric circles enclosing a Maasai family group and its cattle, goats, sheep, and donkeys. The village has a thick fence of acacia branches that forms its outer circle. These branches have sharp thorns that keep the lions, elephants, and other enemies away. Coins For Change buys goats for individual bomas with funds raised by schools and individuals. Each boma receives 20 galla goats. These goats produce milk for the children in the boma. They will have about 30 baby goats within one year. At the end of the year, Coins For Change buys 20 of these goats to give to another boma. The selling boma receives $1000 to be used for school fees and management costs. This year, ve schools adopted bomas. Our goal is to have 40 adopted bomas within two years. For $1000, you can adopt a boma. $50 will buy a galla goat.

About Coins For Change

About six years ago Kathleen McIntire, founder of Coins For Change, sponsored a young Kenyan girl to attend a boarding school. Josephines parents were killed when she was very young and she was adopted by a family who already had 12 children. The following year Kathleen visited Amboseli and found very few schools for their children. She became friends with Chief Joseph Sankale, Ipitek Kisioki, and Chief Patrick Papatiti. Together, they envisioned how a foundation could help the Amboseli Maasai children. The rst problem faced by Coins For Change was that there was no one with education to manage the goals established by the Advisory Board. Kathleen started by sponsoring Joseph Sankale, a Maasai community leader and high school educated junior elder, to attend Day Star University to major in community development. He is currently in his senior year. He is totally trustworthy and now serves as the administrator of the foundations activities in Amboseli. The second problem was how could Coins For Change raise funds where all the funds go directly to supporting the education of the Amboseli Maasai children? It was decided that the foundation would stay small and only focus on Amboseli. All management and administration would be done by volunteers. All volunteers who visit Amboseli pay their own way, including the founder of Coins For Change. www.coinsforchange.org k.mcintire@coinsforchange.org
