About Me
introduction Frank de Jong
Im a young creative designer who has challenged his skills in an international environment, living, studying & designing for companies in Amsterdam, San Diego, San Francisco and London. Throughout my development I found a personal interest in finding the balance between functionality and experience. Where users are provided with a product or system that not only enriches their lives while using it, but also surprises or moves them in a way theyd never imagined. As presented in my portfolio, I covered a range of projects that I worked on. I started with smaller scale tangible products, as emphasized in the internship I did for Philips Research & Design in Eindhoven, where I worked on how to deliver brand values into product design. Throughout my development as designer I got more interested into more immersive ways of designing, in where the focus was more on providing the experience rather than solely aiming for tangible consumer products. This is why I moved to San Francisco to do an internship at worlds biggest interactive museum: the Exploratorium. I worked on designing interactive installations, and developed my passion for experience design. This continued by several interactive installations (EG: Dancerail) that got picked up by musea, conferences and exhibitions worldwide. This allows me to travel the world to display my designs. Throughout my work as designer I dealt with how to attract people and keep their attention, and what this means in the design, user interaction, and storytelling you envision for your design. I proved how to use an iterative & explorative design approach to develop objects that try to move people and pull them into your experiences. My hands-on project experience, the innovative, user driven designs, and the positive references from international companies prove my ability to deliver great results in design projects. PROJECT

interaction design, user experience, public space, idea to product.

Dancerail

CLIENT: Sadlers Wells Theatre (London, UK) TAG: Moving at the speed of light CONTEXT: In October 2009, the dancepiece DYAD 1909 had its world premiere in the prestigious Sadlers Wells theatre in London. Goal was to design an installation for the lobby, that would bring visitors into the experience of the dancepiece, and make them curious while waiting for the show to start. DESCRIPTION: The installation is based upon the arm movement of the most important dance movement in the show. The installation is a handmade 3D representation of that movement, in which electronics are integrated for creating different layers of interaction. The installation reacts on touch, letting people use their whole body to interact with the light that flows thru the tubes. This way they move their body along the shape of the installation while playing with the behaviour of the light, and unconsciously copy one of the dance movements. Exhibitions
storytelling, show dynamics design, interaction design, user experience.

(1) Liberation of Light: a dancer improvising with the light. (2) Lightfestival Ghent, visitors playing with the light (3) TU/e Odyssee Festival: an interactive art performance (4) Demonstration of interaction for French television

DESCRIPTION: After the original event the Dancerail was intended for, the installation was requested on many light and interaction festival, exhibitions and conferences worldwide. Last two years I have been able to travel and install this installation over three continents for over 50.000 visitors. We kept working on enhancing the installation, by teaming up with audio artists; complementing the visual feedback with an auditive soundscape that emerges while touching the installation. Also by collaborating with professional dancers and choreographers, this installation turned from a hands-on experience for visitors into an interactive art performance piece. Its all about emerging people in this visual, ascetically pleasing interaction with the behaviour of light. PROJECT

Flashpoles
urban landscaping, outdoor design.

CLIENT: TNO (Delft/Eindhoven, Netherlands) TAG: Not a game, but a playground to create your own games CONTEXT: TNO (a company that focuses on innovation in design) was hosting a design competition for students. Nowadays the outdoor playgrounds found in urban neighbourhoods are too static and uninteresting to children. The typical swing and slide cant compete with the dynamic fast past entertainment that takes place indoors such as computers and tv. How to design (and landscape) the playground of the future? DESCRIPTION: The playground designed consists of several playfully shaped poles that consist of a lightbox (LEDs) and three colored buttons that can be both pushed and rotated (sensors). The interaction is based upon the principle of open ended play where several interaction schemes are designed to let children make their own games. Using the light of the poles, the kids are discovering new possibilities every day in a much more dynamic and fast paced way of playing games. PUBLICITY: 2006: 1st Price Design to Move Symposium (Amsterdam, Netherlands) 2006: Telegraaf National Newspaper Back to the Playground 2006: Playground Magazine Technology introduced for outdoor interaction 2007: Public University Day (TU/e, Netherlands) 2007: Dutch Design Week (Eindhoven, Netherlands)

Acoustic Clouds
interaction design, user experience, idea to prototype, arduino, landscaping.

(1) Acoustic Clouds at the Studium Generale exposition (2) Person holding the floating surface while active (3) Acoustic Clouds during a public user test (4) In action: see the LEDs in the transparent installation.

CLIENT: Exploratorium (San Francisco, USA) TAG: Experience the visualisation of sound through light CONTEXT: After doing an internship for worlds biggest interactive museum, they offered to sponsor my graduation project if I would design an exhibit for the museum. Design challenge was to create an installation centred around the concept of making people listen more carefully to everyday sounds. DESCRIPTION: Inspiration for this interactive installation comes from the cacophony of sounds around us. The Acoustic Clouds exhibit captures sounds from the nearby environment (using microphones), and based upon their direction, intensity and duration transforms them into clouds within the transparent glass surface. This gives visitors a magical experience when seeing these clouds come to life in this beautifully transparent object. Visitors can not just only look at the visual representation of sounds in the window (using LEDs), but actually get close and listen to the exact sound recordings that are captured in those visual clouds (using micro-speakers). By exploring, listening and discovering the sounds captured in the different clouds, the design focuses on making people listen more carefully to everyday sounds captured around them. PROJECT

SixthSense
product design, user experience programming, integrating technology

CLIENT: Six Flags Holland (Netherlands) TAG: Interactively navigate yourself into adventure! CONTEXT: Nowadays theme-parcs are not just a collection of rides, but they try to tell you a story. Everything from the queue lines to the waste bins is completely designed to keep you in this experience... but how can you make peoples theme-parc visit more effective (in other words, distract them from the busy places and long queue lines) without losing the brand values and adventurous experience of a theme-park like Six Flags? DESCRIPTION: With current solutions in mind (such as the fast-pass and queue signs in the park) I tried designing a more elegant product, and came up the SixthSense compass. This compass uses LED, GPS, compass and WiFi technology, to calculate your position and compare it to other compass users in the park. A normal compass always points north, but this compass always points to the busiest place in the park (red ring) and the calmest place in the park (green ring) based upon the readings of other compasses. This way people can wayfind their way through the park in an adventurous way, and keep being immersed in discovering & experiencing the theme park visit.
Note: This project was done before the smartphone & appstore era started. The use of these technologies combined isnt as innovative as it was back in 2008, although the core idea still holds strong. (1) Composite photo from the final product prototype (2) Lasercutting the materials for the design (3) Testing the LED, GPS and compass technology (4) Interaction scenarios used for this design

VISUAL

Visual Work
visual design, web design, aesthetics

(1) Commercial brochure design hairsalon (Paid) (2) A State of Trance 350 poster (Unpaid) (3) Custom made design for Party Invitation (Paid) (4) Unofficial Retail DVD cover design (Unpaid)

CONTEXT: Because of my work as industrial designer, I also got in contact with how to present, visualize, and bring over the experience of what you want to achieve. Throughout this process I also did some paid (and unpaid) work in graphical design, designing simple things such as party invitations, to more serious visuals such as brochures for shops and companies. Graphical design was never a goal on itself, and I never followed any study that is specified on this type of design, I do however think that communication of your ideas towards potential clients very much relies on the ability to bring across the feeling, atmosphere and core idea of what you have in mind. Therefor the experience and joy I developed in working with programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign & iMovie really helps to convey a message in a much more powerful way than just using words.

what other say about me...

CONTEXT: After I already did an internship at Philips Research & Design at the Hightech Campus in Eindhoven (see resume), I also participated in the Philips Business Class for consumer products in Drachten. DESCRIPTION: Most of the products that return to the shops nowadays dont have hard failures (broken parts or malfunctioning electronics), but are returned because of soft failures (product doesnt meet the expectation). Its extremely difficult for companies to anticipate on this trend, and how to brand their products in the right way. In this business class I developed a system to gather experience feedback from the consumers and incorporate this into the design cycle to enhance the design process and expose the right brand values in the products and user experience. I won this business class together with two others students.

DESCRIPTION: Throughout the design work I did, I have been able to connect the creative aspect I love about design, to a more foundational background. Having a deeper look into user experiences, preparing setups, performing tests, and evaluating results to the current processes and methodologies in design , proved to be very interested to reflect upon my own work, and how to improve those of other. This all lead to two publications that have been presented at conferences in both Orlando (USA) and Taipei (Taiwan) PDMA CONFERENCE (ORLANDO) 10 Kierkels, J. Zwegers, S. de Jong, F. Yuan, Lu.
