BLACKBOARD
by Sid Lee
the idea was QUite simple, bUt theN aGaiN, Good ideas UsUallY are. We decided to invite artists from all over the world to draw on the large blackboards scattered throughout Sid Lee. They would have one week to complete all 25 boards, and once they did, their creation would stay up for two to three months, until the next artist arrived. We started with Nate Williams, an illustrator from Argentina, and since then, many other internationally recognized art ists have also come to partake in the Blackboard project. For the artists, it presents a unique challenge, since they have nothing but different co lours of chalk as a medium. They tend to create pieces that are more conceptual (in other words, they rely more heavily on the idea). At the same time, since chalk is associated with childhood, it gives the artists that same feeling of freedom and innocence they had when they drew on their bedroom walls as children.

a beaUtiFUl part oF the proJect is the creatioN process itselF.

It happens completely out in the open, since the boards cant be moved from their permanent locations. It is really interesting to see how different artists interpret the same space. And unlike when they are working in their stu dios, the artists have to rely on porta ble ladders and lights. It can get quite distracting, especially since theyre smack in the middle of more than 200 abnormally social advertising employees. The Blackboard project is much appreciated by the emplo yees at Sid Lee because it provides them with varying works of art. And since they tend to work there for years, it gives them an everchanging space and helps stimulate their creativity.

what makes this proJect trUlY special is the Fact that we are creatiNG art that is temporarY.
Eventually, it is going to disappear; we know this for a fact (our handyman cleans the boards every two months thanks, Ronald.) But knowing that its not forever just makes us appre ciate it more. It also makes viewers less critical and more openminded about the work. Anyway, by the time they have formed an opinion, the work is already gone. In the end, all we are left with is trails of dust, like the re maining ashes of what is no more.
