• Inspect your machine carefully each day or shift by walking
around it before you start it to avoid personal injury.
• In the walk-around inspection be sure to cover all points
described in the “INSPECT MACHINE DAILY BEFORE
STARTING” section in the operator’s manual.

JUMP STARTING
• Battery gas can explode, resulting in serious injury.
• If the engine must be jump started, be sure to follow
the instructions shown in the “OPERATING THE ENGINE”
chapter in the operator’s manual.
• The operator must be in the operator’s seat so that the
machine will be under control when the engine starts.
Jump starting is a two-person operation.
• Never use a frozen battery.
• Failure to follow correct jump starting procedures could

EQUIPMENT OF OPG
• In case the machine is operated in areas where the
possibility of falling stones or debris exists, equip genuine
Hitachi OPG guard. Contact your nearest Hitachi dealer for
installation method of the OPG guard. Depending on the
specifications applied to your machine, modification of the
machine to meet ROPS standards will be possible.

• Driving on a slope may cause the machine to slip or
overturn, possibly resulting in serious injury or death.
• Never attempt to ascend or descend 35 degrees or steeper
slopes.
• Be sure to fasten the seat belt.
• When driving up or down a slope, keep the bucket facing
the direction of travel, approximately 0.5 to 1.0 m (A)
above the ground.
• If the machine starts to skid or becomes unstable,
immediately lower the bucket to the ground and stop.

To avoid rollaways:
• Select level ground when possible to park machine.
• Do not park the machine on a grade.
• Lower the bucket and/or other work tools to the ground.
• Turn the auto-idle switch and the H/P mode switch off.
• Run the engine at slow idle speed without load for 5

• Pull the pilot control shut-off lever to LOCK position.
• Block both tracks and lower the bucket to the ground.
Thrust the bucket teeth into the ground if you must park
on a grade.

AVOID UNDERCUTTING
• In order to retreat from the edge of an excavation if the
footing should collapse, always position the undercarriage
perpendicular to the edge of the excavation with the travel
motors at the rear.
• If the footing starts to collapse and if retreat is not
possible, do not panic. Often, the machine can be secured
by lowering the front attachment, in such cases.

OBJECT HANDLING
• If a lifted load should fall, any person nearby may be
struck by the falling load or may be crushed underneath it,
resulting in serious injury or death.
• When using the machine for craning operations, be sure
to comply with all local regulations.
• Do not use damaged chains or frayed cables, sables,
slings, or ropes.
• Before craning, position the upperstructure with the travel
motors at the rear.
• Move the load slowly and carefully. Never move it
suddenly.
• Keep all persons well away from the load.
• Never move a load over a person's head.
• Do not allow anyone to approach the load until it is safely
and securely situated on supporting blocks or on the
ground.
• Never attach a sling or chain to the bucket teeth. They
may come off, causing the load to fall.

TRANSPORT SAFELY
• Take care the machine may turn over when loading or
unloading the machine onto or off of a truck or trailer.
• Observe the related regulations and rules for safe
transportation.
• Select an appropriate truck or trailer for the machine to be
transported.
• Be sure to use a signal person.
• Always follow the following precautions for loading or
unloading: SA-395
1. Select solid and level ground.
2. Always use a ramp or deck strong enough to support the
machine weight.
3. Turn auto-idle switch OFF.
4. Always select the slow speed mode with the travel mode
switch.
5. Never load or unload the machine onto or off a truck or
trailer using the front attachment functions when driving
up or down the ramp.
6. Never steer the machine while on the ramp. If the
traveling direction must be changed while the ramp,
unload the machine from the ramp, reposition the
machine on the ground, then try loading again.
7. The top end of the ramp where it meets the flatbed is a
sudden bump. Take care when traveling over it.
8. Place blocks in front of and behind the tracks. Securely
hold the machine to the truck or trailer deck with wire
ropes.

Check for Oil Leaks:
• Fuel, hydraulic oil and lubricant leaks can lead to fires.
• Check for oil leaks due to missing or loose clamps, kinked
hoses, lines or hoses that rub against each other, damage
to the oil-cooler, and loose oil-cooler flange bolts.
• Tighten, repair or replace any missing, loose or damaged
clamps, lines, hoses, oil-cooler and oil-cooler flange bolts.
• Do not bend or strike high-pressure lines.

Clean up Flammables:
• Spilled fuel and oil, and trash, grease, debris, accumulated
coal dust, and other flammables may cause fires.

the wiper in the INT mode, when the wiper/washer switch
is pressed, the wiper operation mode is changed to the
continuous operation mode.

Regardless of variations in atmospheric temperature and
whether sun light is intense or not, the air temperature at
the vent, blower speed, and air in/out vent locations are
automatically controlled so that air temperature in the cab

Press AUTO switch (11). When the indicator comes ON,
the AUTO operation mode is selected. In response to
the set-temperature, the blower speed, vent mode, and M178-01-017
ventilation mode are automatically controlled.
• MANUAL Operation Mode
Press AUTO switch (11). When the indicator goes OFF, the
MANUAL operation mode is selected. Air temperature,
blower speed, vent mode, and ventilation mode can be

COOLING OPERATION

WARMING-UP OPERATION
In cold weather, warm up the machine until coolant and
hydraulic oil temperature increases to the appropriate 1

Slow Idle
1. Run the engine with engine control dial (1) turned to the

Do not operate the machine until the needle of coolant
temperature gauge (2) starts swinging.
2. After the needle of coolant temperature gauge (2) starts
swinging, turn engine control dial (1) to approx. midium M1J1-05-001
position.
3. Operate the boom, arm and bucket cylinders slowly to
each stroke end several times.
4. Operate the travel and swing functions slowly to allow
hydraulic oil to circulate through the systems.

OPERATING BACKHOE
1. Place the bucket teeth on the ground with the bottom of
the bucket at a 45 degree angle to the ground.
2. Pull the bucket toward the machine using the arm as the
main digging force.
3. When soil sticks to the bucket, remove it by moving the
arm and/or bucket rapidly back and forth.
4. When trenching a straight line, position the tracks
parallel to the trench. After digging to the desired depth,

Example commercial attachment models (breakers) for
excavators are shown in the following table.
When the machine is operated with an attachment other
than bucket, generally heavier loads are applied to the base
machine comparing with bucket only operation. Therefore,
unless the machine is properly operated, damage not only the
attachment but to the base machine may result. Thoroughly
read and understand the base machine operator’s manual and
the attachment manual to prevent accidents.

TRANSPORTING BY ROAD
When transporting the machine on public roads, be
sure to first understand and follow all local regulations.
LOADING/UNLOADING ON A TRAILER
Always load and unload the machine on a firm, level surface.
Ramp/Loading Dock:
1. Before loading, thoroughly clean the ramp and flatbed.
Dirty ramps or flatbeds with oil, mud, or ice on them are
slippery and dangerous.
2. Place blocks against the truck and trailer wheels while
using a ramp or loading dock.
3. Ramps must be sufficient in width, length, and strength.
Be sure that the incline of the ramp is less than 15
degrees.
4. Loading docks must be sufficient in width and strength
to support the machine and have an incline of less than
15 degrees.

Always turn the auto-idle switch OFF and power
mode switch (E) or (P) when loading or unloading
the machine, to avoid unexpected speed increase
due to unintentional operation of a control lever.
• Always select the slow speed mode with the travel
mode switch.
• NEVER steer while driving up or down a ramp
as it is extremely dangerous. If repositioning
is necessary, first move back to the ground or
flatbed, modify traveling direction, and begin to
drive again.
• The top end of the ramp where it meets the flatbed
is a sudden bump. Take care when traveling over it.
• Prevent possible injury from machine tipping
while the upperstructure is rotating. Keep the arm
tucked under and rotate the upperstructure slowly
for best stability.
Loading
1. The machine direction should be as follows:
With the front attachment: Travel forward with the front
attachment at the front.
Without the front attachment: Travel in reverse, as
90 to 110°
illustrated.
2. The centerline of the machine should be over the
centerline of the trailer.
3. Drive the machine onto the ramp slowly.

A. GREASING
AUTOMATIC LUBRICATION --- IF EQUIPPED
The automatic lubrication device uses grease-tank-attached
electric pump (1) to automatically lubricate the greasing 2
points on the front attachment at intervals. Turn auto
lubrication switch (2) ON, then confirm that auto lubrication
displays (4), (5) display on monitor (3).
Electric pump (1) is set to operate for duration of
approximately 2 minutes at 50 operating minutes intervals.
Electric pump (1) is located in the right front cover. M1J1-03-001
Electric pump (1) and grease tank (6) are all-in-one designs.

The following points are lubricated by the automatic
lubrication device.
As for the bucket and link pins, use a grease gun to
lubricate them. (Refer to the heading “Greasing” in the
“MAINTENANCE” section.)

IMPORTANT: • The system will not operate unless grease M16J-OP9-001
pump switch (1) and switch (10) are ON. In
case the system does not operate, check
if grease pump switch (1) and switch (10)
are ON. (ZX450LC-3 is not equipped with
switch (10).)
• Check that lubrication mode switch (3)
is in the AUTO position before shifting
lubrication control valve lever (2) to
the AUTO position. In case lubrication
mode switch (3) is in the MANUAL
position, auto- lubrication alarm on the 10
monitor panel comes ON. In this case, the M1J7-07-040
lubricator will continue to supply grease, 2
possibly resulting in oversupplying of To Distributor
grease.
• If the follow plate is incorrectly set, the

of grease gun nozzle (3), install the tip of nozzle (3) onto
the grease fitting.

supplied, old grease will be pushed out of the clearances

4. After greasing is complete, bleed the pressure
remaining in the grease gun by tilting nozzle (3) before Grease Fitting
disconnecting nozzle (3) from the grease fitting. A small
amount of grease will spout at this moment.

Replacement Procedures
1. Park the machine on solid and level ground. Fully extend
the bucket cylinder, fully retract the arm cylinder, and
lower the bucket to the ground as illustrated to the right.
Stop the engine.
2. Before replacing element (3), be sure to release pressure
from the hydraulic oil tank by pressing the pressure
release button on the hydraulic oil tank.

Anti-rust agent
Add approximately 0.8 L (0.8 US qt) of anti-rust agent to the
new coolant when the coolant is changed.
It is not necessary to add anti-rust agent when antifreeze is
used.
Antifreeze
If the air temperature is expected to fall below 0°C (32°F), fill
the cooling system with an antifreeze and soft water mix. As
a general rule, the ratio of antifreeze should range between
30% and 60% as shown in the table below. If the ratio is
below 30%, the system may develop rust, and if it is above
60%, the engine may overheat.

2. Off-season maintenance
(1) Operate the compressor once a week at low speed
for several minutes in order to maintain its parts in
well lubricated condition. Be sure to run the engine
at slow idle and place the temperature control switch
in MEDIUM COOL. This operation also prevents
refrigerant leakage caused by dried up shaft seal.
(2) Check for refrigerant leakage. If the refrigerant level

Swing the upperstructure 90° and lower the bucket to raise the
track off the ground as shown.
Keep the angle between the boom and arm 90 to 110° and
position the bucket’s round side on the ground. Place blocks
under the machine frame to support the machine.
Rotate the raised track in reverse two full rotations and then
forward two full rotations.
