Glory and Dominion

To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. (1 Peter 5:11)

Leadership is tough! Great leadership makes great followers, and great followers develop great leaders. There seems to be a strange separation between what we say we want and what we are willing to accept. If we agree that we are not talking about the blind following the blind, we can assume that recognizable leadership is desired and fulfills an important role in the general direction of living. Whether we are thinking of children or adults, we know that some oversight is needed for groups or even individuals. Still, we tend to kick our leaders. We want them to be there. We want them to be responsible for anything that happens. We want them to make our lives better. (Wow! That sure sounds selfish when I write it.) We just dont want them to do anything that does not please us. We are really ready to follow leaders, up to a point. Now, if leaders are taking us on a dangerous course to no real benefit, we may be justified to boot their leadership and harshly criticize them. Too often, we tend to balk simply out of personal preference and self-imposed limitations. I am thinking about the man who came to me many years ago to tell me that we could not do what the elders of the church were challenging us to do. His problem was the cost. He did not want to deal with the needed increase in giving. I asked him if he believed in following elders. He said he did. I said that it appeared he was only willing to follow the leaders as long they did what he wanted. He later told me that I had made him think. Good. We may find ourselves treating God as if he is to be recognized and praised. We will sing the songs, pray the prayers, and even openly state how great God is. We may just struggle with giving Him the dominion that belongs to Him. It appears that we may want to have a god. We may want to have a responsible entity. We just struggle with letting Him have dominion over us. Let Him be God. Russ
