Our purpose is to: Follow Jesus Together We do this by: Opening our hearts to people and to Christ in worship and fellowship, so that we know God and each other more fully, Opening our minds to deepen our Christian faith, understand our heritage, and think together to solve common problems, and Opening our doors in welcome and hospitality, even as we go out of those doors to invite people into God's church and be in service to all of our neighbors everywhere.

In God We Trust
Theres an erroneous email going around that the United States Mint has begun to omit the phrase in God we trust from the new one dollar coins. For a while, the in God we trust was found along the outer edge, but fears that it might wear away in that location have caused the mint to put the phrase underneath the picture of the U.S. presidents on the front of the coin. The spread of this erroneous email has caused me to think about how quickly people are ready to believe bad things about the government (or about some other them far enough removed). I am no legal scholar, but this also makes me ask some questions about the whole area of separation of church and state: How much religious expression do we want the government to do? (In God We Trust is certainly religious expression.) Whose religious expression should it be? Who should decide what, if any, additional religious words should occur on our currency? What about prayers in congress, or prayer in the military? These are not easy questions to answer. I would welcome prayer at high school graduation it would be very appropriate to thank God at that momentous time. But would I object if the prayer contained ideas that I dont agree with? Would others welcome a Rabbi or Buddhist Monk leading the prayer? Can one have a prayer in a public gathering that would offend nobody? Or does prayer in public places have to be so bland that it makes people feel good but not think? I affirm the Constitution, and the phrase that says Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. I believe in religious freedom. But that freedom means there is a religious marketplace with all sorts of ideas, not all of which are good for us. Some of those ideas have very good packaging, but are far from what God wants for us.

Page 2

The question basically comes down to this: What do we do when freedom and faith clash? Where do we draw the line? I believe the Holy Spirit helps us sort through those things if we take the time to talk and pray about them together. This Memorial Day weekend, lets think about freedom and faith, and how we can make them both work together. ~~Jim

Family Friendly Friday Night Film!
The family film for the evening of Friday, June 11th, at 7:00 p.m. is Brother Bear. This months movie is Brother Bear, an epic animated Disney adventure full of comedy and heart. With five great songs from Academy Award winner Phil Collins (1999 Best Original Song, "You'll Be In My Heart," from Tarzan(R)), it's "pure Disney magic from beginning to end!" When an impulsive boy named Kenai is magically transformed into a bear, he must literally walk in another's footsteps until he learns some valuable life lessons. His courageous and often zany journey introduces him to a forest full of wildlife, including the lovable bear cub Koda, hilarious moose Rutt and Tuke, woolly mammoths, rambunctious rams, and more! Brother Bear is "a charming, enchanting story for kids of all ages!" As always, volunteers for ushers, food servers, set up and clean up are always needed. Come and join this growing family ministry!

Half of the offering supports grants to special programs by the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries. The other half remains with the Wisconsin Annual Conference for peace with justice ministries. Here are some other ways you can help:

God closes doors no man can open & God opens doors no man can close.

Plant a community peace garden and donate food to Second Harvest Food bank. Participate in Habitat for Humanity. Teach your children about peaceful conflict resolution and anti-bullying.

UMW NEWS
Connections. That is what my life has been about since someone asked me to serve as UMW President and I agreed. I figured that the connections would be female and lots of them have been. But in making those connections I of course connected with the other gender and all ages. I have learned that women who are connected help connect the rest of the world! Mary Baker invited a UMW friend to come and speak to us at our last meeting. She did come and she connected with us. Corrine Robson and I chatted from Portage to Columbus and back and I learned a lot about her like why she doesnt own a car. She shared a story at the meeting about taking a road trip with some UMW friends on which one woman was hospitalized along the way and had to be left behind to recover. When Corrine got home she called the United Methodist Church near the hospital and asked the UM women if they could maybe visit her friend. Wellas you might guess the friend had so many visitors she was almost overwhelmed! Far from home with no one close to her, this victim of circumstance had positive and encouraging visitors of faith help fill the hours until her release. I got connections from that story. Corrine also heads the Grandparent/Grandchild Camp and I think someone got connected with that! How awesome. The world seems to spin a little easier with people responding to the needs of other people. Oh yeah, thats what were supposed to be about, right? See you in the fall. Praise be to God. What Makes a Dad

God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle's flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it ... Fathers Day
Any fool can be a Father, but it takes a real man to be a Daddy!! Philip Whitmore Sr. "The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother." Unknown When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years. Mark Twain, "Old Times on the Mississippi" Atlantic Monthly, 1874 A man never stands as tall as when he kneels to help a child. Knights of Pythagoras One night a father overheard his son pray: Dear God, Make me the kind of man my Daddy is. Later that night, the Father prayed, Dear God, Make me the kind of man my son wants me to be. Unknown I talk and talk and talk, and I haven't taught people in 50 years what my father taught by example in one week. Mario Cuomo "Train up a child in the way which he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it" Proverbs 22:6

Sunday School Picnic

Every year, the Sunday School invites the whole church to come to a picnic to celebrate the completion of Sunday School. This was held on May 23 in our Fellowship Hall. We enjoyed excellent burgers and hot dogs prepared by our chef, Mr. Mike. We also enjoyed some tasty red cabbage and apples, and wonderful dessert. The children made hats and crosses to take home as a memento of this years Sunday School.

Summer Sunday School Continues

Our Christian Education committee is planning for there to be a simplified Sunday School each Sunday of the summer, with the exception of July 4th, when 10:30 worship will be cancelled because of parade traffic.

Patsy Takes the Next Step!

Patsy Roe, our Lay Leader and a Certified Candidate for Ministry in the United Methodist Church, will be going to Licensing School July 18-30 in Indiana. Attending Licensing School is a step toward serving as a Licensed Local Pastor in the United Methodist Church. Patsy has already been approved by our own church, studied with a mentor, been approved by the District Committee on Ordained Ministry, and taken some tests. This next step will be a fairly costly one, for materials, housing, food and instruction. If you would like to contribute toward furthering Patsys education, you are invited to drop an envelope in the collection plate or take it to the church office.

No 10:30 Worship on July 4th

We rarely cancel worship, but we will cancel the 10:30 service on July 4th. By the time that service would normally end, the parade traffic and crowds will have made it hard for some people to get home. So, come at 9 a.m. and go get your spot for the parade!

TRANSITIONAL LIVING PROGRAM WELCOME BASKETS

Page 8

The CUMC Missions Committee will be collecting donations throughout the summer for United Methodist Childrens Services Transitional Living Program. United Methodist Childrens Services is a comprehensive, multi-faceted social service agency serving the Milwaukee community. The Transitional Living Program provides safe, affordable housing, on-site social services, and childcare. It is a comprehensive program which enables low-income, single parent families to become self-sufficient. This program has a great need for Welcome Baskets filled with cleaning supplies for the residents. Here is the list of items that are needed:

Laundry basket Laundry detergent detergent Dish Sponge mop Kitchen broom pan Dust Kitchen towels and washcloths Hand soap Shower liner and rings Toilet tissue

Facial tissue Household cleaner Paper towel Non-abrasive tub cleaner cleaner Toilet bowl brush Toilet and Queen sheets Twin Kitchen wastebasket Kitchen size waste basket liners Alarm clock

Monetary donations are also welcome. Please indicate TLP Welcome Basket in the check memo, or if donating cash, please place in a Mission envelope and write TLP Welcome Basket on the envelope. Donations should be placed in the collection plate.

Sound/Video Booth Changes

You may have noticed how much easier it is to hear the "live" sound in the sanctuary lately. The sound is also much better to the hearing assistance devices and the tapes that are sent to be "broadcast" on cable TV. This is because we now have a new mixer/soundboard in the sound booth. This controls the inputs from the various microphones and CD player. It also controls the outgoing signal, which can be sent to the sanctuary speakers, the hallway, Fellowship Hall and Nursery, to computer if we wish to record digitally, and to the audio and video tape recorders. The mixer was a memorial gift given by Winfred and Muriel Mandody in memory of Carl Mandody, their father and husband, respectively. Others gave donations that helped with a few additional cable connections that had to be purchased. We will soon add four additional microphone jacks below the communion rail on the left side of the sanctuary, for use by the Praise Team. The cable has been purchased and will be laid and connected sometime this summer.
