2011-12 Subject: Video Production Course Instructor: Dr. Dave

Course Description: Video Production is a course that is designed to develop higher levels of competence in computer skills that students will use in secondary school, as well as introduce new enrichment topics. Specific skills will be introduced in each area and will then be applied in individual and group projects. Students will write, direct, edit and produce short videos throughout the semester as well as a short news broadcast. Productions usually combine sound editing, video filming and pre and post-production techniques. A simple animation program may be introduced and included in student created projects. Teams of students will also be engaged in projects stemming from the various service programs run through the School.

Course Aims: To familiarize students with the use of computers, and encourage students to use computers in all subjects. To teach students specific computer skills in a variety of applications To help students learn how to integrate various applications, peripheral devices, and web tools for a specific purpose. To enhance student skills in the production of multimedia projects.

To promote critical thinking skills regarding the potential impact media can have on people.

Major Concepts Covered: Basic graphic design. Multimedia: Video, Audio Technological Literacy Collaboration skills with peers and faculty.

Outcomes: By the end of this course, it is a goal that each student will be able to: Create, manipulate, and transfer graphic files in many formats. Construct a component of the middle school year end video including text, graphics, and sound and animation. Determine appropriate software applications for the communication of ideas and information in a network environment. Develop proficiency in creating multimedia productions for a variety of purposes. Problem solve with progressively less instructor dependence.

Assessment of Student Performance: Students will self assess each project. Some tasks will require written peer evaluation and most will undergo class critiques. While each assignment or project is different, many items are integral to each project. Assessment rubrics will may be used that include the skills of the project, quality of the video, accurate content, and the effort applied in the project.

Equipment Video camera Teaching Methodology Classes will be conducted using a variety of methodologies. These methodologies will include teacher demonstration, individual computer work, cooperative work, student participation and presentations.

Grading Policy: This is an Exemplary / Pass / Fail course. All work time, projects, and class behaviors are factored into the final grade.

Additional Expectations Students are expected to work sincerely with full concentration on the assigned task. Students are expected to show respect for the equipment in the lab. Students are expected to follow the middle school Internet Acceptable Use Policy.
