Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation Center


Campus Recreations Open Recreation program offers a range of recreation opportunities for you to participate in, either on your own or with friends. From playing table tennis, to working on your jump shot, to practicing your dance step, or running on the treadmill, open recreation at the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation Center makes it easy for you to keep fit, have fun and relax. Membership to the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation Center is provided to all currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students through student fees. Faculty, staff and campus affiliates are eligible to purchase a membership to the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation Center. PREVIEW DAYS During Preview Days faculty, staff and affiliates may enjoy a complimentary one-day trial membership. This membership allows full access to all of the equipment and resources in the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation Center. This includes all group fitness and specialty classes. Preview Days for the fall semester are on the following Fridays: September 30, October 28 and November 18. For more information about Preview Days, stop by the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation Center front desk. Are you a serious sport competitor? Then maybe you should join a UC Merced Sport Club. The Sport Club Program is designed to provide opportunities for UC Merced students with a mutual interest in competitive sporting activities to pursue their interest in more depth. Sport Club teams are student formed and managed within the policies and procedures set forth by the Recreation & Athletics Department, UC Merced campus policies and Sport Clubs Advisory Board (SCAB).

Recreation & Athletics Intramural Sports (IM) Program offers a great way to have fun and meet new people. There are a wide variety of activities from traditional team sports such as flag football, volleyball, basketball and soccer, to individual sports, and even some non-traditional sports such as dodgeball and kickball. So, if you are looking to relieve stress, have fun with others, or develop friendships through competition, then sign up for UC Merced Intramural Sports. Welcome to the Fun Zone! There are options for all skill and competitive levels. The leagues are structured into open (O), mens (M), womens (W) and coed (C) leagues.

Varsity Player Limits

Intramural teams are limited to the number of current varsity or sport club athletes in the sport on the roster. CAPTAINS MEETING The purpose of the captains meetings are to explain the IM policies and procedures, cover the basic rules of a specific sport and review the schedules. Each team entering an intramural activity must appoint a team captain. The captain is the official liaison between the team and the Intramural Sports Program. The captain must be listed as a member of the team on the official team roster. Specific responsibilities of the team captain include but are not limited to, attending the mandatory captains meeting, checking eligibility of team members, and securing any competition date changes with the IM Coordinator. *Any team/individual not represented at a captains meeting will be charged a $20 forfeit fine. In addition to the fine, the team/individual will lose the ability to protest rule interpretations.

Fitness & Wellness


Physical activity is an important component of healthy living and a healthy lifestyle. When you incorporate exercise and physical activity into your daily routine, you can increase your energy, boost your confidence and feel great! The Fitness & Wellness program provides a variety of opportunities from personal training to group fitness classes. Whatever your level, the Fitness & Wellness staff are there to help you reach your goals!
Personal Training A complementary 45-minute consultation with our Fitness Coordinator is required as part of each new personal training package. Appointments can be scheduled by calling (209) 228-7732. A personal trainer can help you reach your fitness goals in a planned and effective way. Individuals that are seeking a high-quality individualized workout program, or need personal feedback and motivation, or are training for a specific event should consider hiring a personal trainer. Our certified personal trainers are specialized in strength training, cardiovascular training, sport specific training and flexibility. All sessions are one hour. 3 Sessions: $90 6 Sessions: $174 8 Sessions: $224 Fitness Assessment Personal trainers will evaluate your present fitness level and provide recommendations. Measurements include resting heart rate, body composition, muscle strength and endurance plus flexibility and cardiovascular recovery. $30 per session Group Exercise Recreation & Athletics group exercise program offers daily classes for all levels and interests. The schedule offers a diverse mix of cardiovascular workouts, strength training and flexibility. Classes are open to all currently enrolled students and faculty/staff and current affiliate members of the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation Center. Kickboxing/Boot Camp A non-contact class utilizing basic kicks and punches. Designed as a total body workout that keeps you moving. Pilates Level 1 Learn the basic skills and exercises for Mat Pilates. Gain an understanding of neutral spine and how to train your abdominal & back muscles improving your posture. Class includes a warmup, stretching & fun music. Dont forget to bring your tennis shoes, water and be ready to focus on your ABS! Pilates Level 2 This class is designed for those that have experience in Pilates and an understanding of its basic exercises. The workout includes the use of the theraband-ball, thera-bands and hand weights. Bring your tennis shoes to warm-up and get ready to workout your whole body. Pilates Mix Mix it up on Friday! This class includes cardio, strength training and flexibility. Bring your tennis shoes, water and get ready to move! Workouts may be done outside, weather permitting. Zumba A high energy, exhilarating class. Its a combination of Latin, Meringue, Reggaeton & Cumbia style techniques with a touch of salsa! Come enjoy a high-energy class!! Boot Camp This class will whip you into shape. It incorporates military style drills. Its a non-stop workout from running to squats, lunges, plyo-metric moves, crunches and many more. Cycling is a great way to mix up your workouts and try something new; it increases your cardiovascular efficiency and tones your glutes and thighs. Enjoy fun upbeat music to match your workouts, whether its climbing a hill or sprinting down a straightaway. Your heart is pumping and you are sweating!! Yoga Class will incorporate various yoga poses to increase strength, flexibility, quality of breath, and concentration. Emphasis is on proper alignment for YOUR body. Modifications will be offered to help you work your way into a pose or take it to the next level. The classes will progress throughout the semester, but feel free to drop in at any time. Wear clothes that allow you to move freely. Mats and props provided. Friday Yoga begins September 2nd Bobcat Cross Training Total body conditioning class consisting of sports inspired cardio exercises, boxing, strength training, plyometrics, calisthenics & ab work. The exercises are effective and easily modified for your fitness level. Come get in shape!! Dance Mix This class teaches you basic steps in dance styles such as Latin, Hip hop and Modern in a fun and easy way. Dance Mix is a fun way to get your heart rate up and make you feel great! Theres awesome gut blasting abdominal & core training featured in the class. Dance your way into shape! Turbo Kick The Hottest Cardio Kickboxing class for fitness training! Its a fun FUSION of hip hop and kickboxing partnered with athletic intervals to get your heart rate up & get you results.

California offers some of the most spectacular natural areas in the world, including Yosemite, Lake Tahoe and the American and Kern Rivers. UC Merced has one of these natural areas right in its own backyard; Yosemite! Outdoor Adventures can take you there. We offer a diverse range of activities such as hiking, backpacking, skiing, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and many other exciting and educational opportunities. Outdoor Adventures also features helpful resources including the Wilderness Center, which includes a library of books and maps for the National and State Parks in California. Outdoor Adventures also rents equipment for you to be able to enjoy the outdoors on your own! Fall Activities American River Rafting Trip Date: September 3 Pre-Trip Meeting: August 31 at 7pm Departure Time: 6:00 am Cost: TBA Trip Rating: Strenuous Experienced whitewater rafting enthusiasts consider the North Fork one of the most beautiful and challenging runs for whitewater rafting in California. Providing exciting and technical whitewater thrills, this whitewater rafting run tumbles and drops nine miles through a steep, narrow canyon of rugged and remote wilderness beauty. Your heart will race as you make your way through the whitewater rafting maze of cabin-sized boulders and drop over the steep waterfalls. Trip fee includes transportation, guides and rafting equipment. Tuolumne Meadows Trail Ride Trip Date: September 11 Pre-Trip Meeting: September 7 at 7pm Departure Time: 7:00 am Cost: $75/$95/$105 (S/A/G) Trip Rating: Easy Grab your 10-gallon hat and strap on yer spurs, partner; were about to hit the High Sierra trail. Join us for two hours in the saddle in spectacular Tuolumne Meadows. On this trail ride, we will experience some of the most magnificent views that the Yosemite High Country has to offer. Transportation, Park entry fees, and stable fees are included. Sentinel Dome at Sunset Trip Date: September 17 Pre-Trip Meeting: September 14 at 7pm Departure Time: 1:00pm Cost: $30/$45/$55 (S/A/G) Trip Rating: Moderate At 8,122, spectacular Sentinel Dome is the second highest viewpoint above Yosemite Valley; only Half Dome stretches higher into the sky. From Sentinels rotund summit, we will witness amazing views of Yosemites wilderness along with an incredible sunset, followed by one of the brightest starry nights imaginable (if cloudless conditions prevail). In addition to this moderate 2.2 mile round-trip hike to Sentinel Dome, we will also visit nearby Washburn and Glacier Points, believed by many world travelers to be the most beautiful views on the planet. Sierra Nevada Backpacking Trip Date: September 16-18 Pre-Trip Meeting: September 7 and 14 Departure Time: 4:00pm Cost: $50/$65/$75 (S/A/G) Trip Rating: Moderate Enjoy the pristine beauty and solitude of the Sierra wilderness while you learn outdoor skills and the natural history on this spectacular trip. All group camping gear (tents, stoves) and food are included in the registration fee. Backpacks and sleeping bags are available. Kayaking San Francisco Bay Trip Date: September 18 Pre-Trip Meeting: September 14 at 7 pm Departure Time: 9:00am Cost: $50/$65/$75 (S/A/G) Trip Rating: Easy Take this opportunity to kayak through one of the most beautiful cities in the world! Join the UC Merced Outdoor Adventure crew for a thrilling kayaking trip in the San Francisco Bay. We will be passing under the glorious Bay Bridge, McCovey Cove, and breathtaking waterfront landmarks. Dont miss out on this great opportunity! Trip fee includes performance gear, touring kayak, instructions, and guide. Middle earth expedition Trip Date: September 24 Pre-Trip Meeting: September 21 at 7pm Departure Time: 6:00 am Cost: $80/$95/$150 (S/A/G) Trip Rating: Strenuous Ready to get muddy underground? Join the Outdoor Adventure program on a four-hour tour of California Mammoth Cave. We will explore the historic Mammoth Cave area and Jungle Room area of Mammoth Cave, walking, crawling, wiggling and squirming through natural passages that connect through thirteen chambers. Once at California Caverns we will don our overalls, gloves and hard hats for our trip through the cave. After four hours of mucking through the mud exploring the amazing sites, we hit the showers. Explore a Living Glacier Trip Date: September 24 Pre-Trip Meeting: September 21 at 7pm Departure Time: 6:00 am Cost: $30/$45/$55 (S/A/G) Trip Rating: Strenuous Welcome autumn this year with an exciting, epic adventure! Join an exploration team of wilderness rangers and outdoor adventure guides to visit the HIgh Sierra to enjoy the changing seasons and explore an actual living Sierra Nevada glacier. On this remarkable all-day trek (approximately 7 miles round trip), we will experience unparalled beauty and learn of the structure, geology, history, and erosive action of glaciers in the Yosemite region. Yosemite Facelift Trip Date: September 25 Pre-Trip Meeting: September 21 at 7pm Departure Time: 7:00am Cost: $5/$10/$15 (S/A/G) Trip Rating: Easy Join the largest volunteer clean up in the park system. Spend the day giving back to the Park and enjoy the spectacular scenery at the same time. Volunteers will be entered in a raffle at the end of the day and can stay for a free reception dinner in the evening. Become a steward of Yosemite and help protect your National Park! High Sierra East Side Exploration Trip Date: September 30-October 2 Pre-Trip Meeting: September 28 at 7pm Departure Time: 4:00 pm Cost: $50/$65/$75 (S/A/G) Trip Rating: Moderate Join a Yosemite Wilderness Ranger for a twoday exploration in Yosemites high country and the Sierra East Side. On day one, we will visit spectacular Tuolumne Meadows and the Tioga Pass region, then set up our camp on the dramatic East Side of the Sierra amidst Quaking Aspens in their fiery autumn glory. On our second day, well discover the secrets of enchanting Mono Lake and its mysterious Tufa Towers, then travel back in time to the Gold Rush days as we explore Bodie, the best-preserved ghost town in the entire West. All group camping gear (tents, stoves) and food are included in the registration fee. Backpacks and sleeping bags are available. Sierra Nevada Backpacking Trip Date: October 7-9 Pre-Trip Meeting: Sept. 28 and Oct. 5, 7pm Departure Time: 4:00pm Cost: $50/$65/$75 (S/A/G) Trip Rating: Moderate Enjoy the pristine beauty and solitude of the Sierra wilderness while you learn outdoor skills and the natural history on this spectacular trip. Rock Climbing Trip Date: October 16, Pre-Trip Meeting: October 12, 7pm Departure Time: 7:00am Cost: $70/$100/$145 (S/A/G) Trip Rating: Moderate The Yosemite Mountaineering School will provide a half-day of technical rock climbing in the spectacular Yosemite Valley. Learn climbing techniques, knots, belay techniques and how to repel from the experts. YMS guides are world class! Experience some of the best rock climbing in the world! River Park Shopping Spree Trip Date: October 22 Pre-Trip Meeting: October 19 at 7:00 pm Departure Time: 10:00am Cost: $30/$45/$55 (S/A/G) Trip Rating: Easy Spend the day at the River Park Shopping Center in northern Fresno. With over 40 stores to choose from, you are guaranteed to find something of your taste. After a long day of shopping, feel free to dine in one of the many delicious restaurants that this shopping center has to offer! Monterrey Bay Tour Shuttle Trip Date: October 29 Pre-Trip Meeting: October 26 at 7:00 pm Departure Time: 8:00am Cost: $30/$45/$55 (S/A/G) Trip Rating: Easy
Enjoy a wonderful day exploring the many attractions that Monterrey Bay has to offer and leave the driving to us. It is the perfect place for an exciting adventure or a romantic evening. From historic adobes and landmarks to Fishermans Wharf and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey has something for everyone.

Mountain Biking Trip Date: November 5 Pre-Trip Meeting: November 2 at 7:00 pm Departure Time: 7:00am Cost: $30/$45/$55 (S/A/G) Trip Rating: Moderate/Strenuous Join the UC Merced Outdoor Adventure crew on an adventure you wont soon forget! Take this opportunity to peddle the Sierra Foothills as we overlook the wonderful Lake McClure and powerful Merced River. The thrill begins when the rubber meets the dirt on this ridge top fire road offering flats, long winding descents, and steady climbs, not to mention views of Yosemites El Capitan and Half Dome! Participants must provide their own suspension mountain bike, lunch, and water bottle. Helmets are required. Winter at Lake Tahoe Trip Date: December 17-19 Pre-Trip Meeting: December 7 at 7pm Departure Time: 7:00am Cost: TBA School is out! What better way to start the beginning of your winter vacation than to explore South Lake Tahoe with your friends and the UC Merced Outdoor Adventure staff. With countless of fun activities to choose from, such as snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing, and many more, this will be an adventurous weekend you will never forget!

Easy--Beginner level, no previous experience Moderate--Participants must have pervious experience in outdoor activities, which may include exposure to the elements, hiking, uneven terrain and carrying small daypacks Strenuos--Trip may consist of high altitude and long mileages. Previous backpacking, trekking experienceer requried. Ability to swim may be required. Not sure which level is right for you? Policies and Procedures


Rate Policy Students and members of the Recreation & Athletics Program recieve reduced rental rates. Member rates apply for currently enrolled UC Merced undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff Non-students must be 18 or older to rent equipment. Deposit Rates $100 per item; more for selected items. Members may use check or credit card for deposit. Non-members must leave a credit card deposit. Cleaning, Damage, Replacement Policy Cleaning Fee=$10 per item. Damaged gear subject to repair fees at market rates. Lost or unrentable = Full retail value of item. Pick-Up/Return Policy Rentals can be picked up or returned any time during regular hours of the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation Center. Late Rentals will be charged at the additional day rate. A cleaning fee is charged on all items returned wet and/or dirty. To dry tents: Hang or set up in a well-ventilated area. To clean tents: Use a damp sponge and cloth.
